In the beginning of the story Macbeth meets three witches that tell him that he will be the Thane of Cowdar and eventually become King. Essentially Macbeth does not believe this and ignores it. Her regard for Macbeth is one of low respect and beratement, an uncommon and most likely socially unacceptable attitude for a wife to have towards her spouse at the time. She often ignores morality and acts for the benefit of her husband, and subsequently herself. She is also very power-hungry and lets nothing stand in the way of her success. Lady Macbeth was a character which challenged expectations of women and feminism when it was written in the seventeenth century.
The theme of gender inequality is ever-present throughout Shakespeare’s MacBeth. Every character in the play has a thirst for power, but Lady MacBeth’s ultimate desire for power overrules the others. Given the circumstances she has to live with, Lady MacBeth learns how to manipulate the men in her life so she too can succeed. As Lady Macbeth impels Macbeth to kill King Duncan, she indicated that she must take on some sort of masculine characteristic in order to process the murder. “Come, you spirits/ that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, / and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full/ of direst cruelty.” (i v 31-34) This speech is made after she reads Macbeth’s letter. Power is also the dominant theme of this play because most of the people that are in the play are power-hungry such as Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. Their avidity to obtain this imperium goes to their heads and results in several deaths including their own deaths. Macbeth yearns for authority and these desires to achieve those powers, leads him down a dark and bloody path. Macbeth is willing to do anything to gain the power and becoming the king. He is willing to kill anyone who stands in his way from getting that power, which includes women and children. Macbeth’s eagerness is the reason why he is destroyed. Ambition and power are the dominant themes in Shakespeare’s Macbeth because of Macbeth’s ambition to gain power by killing Duncan, Banquo, and Macduff’s family.
