The average NFL player takes up to 1,000 blows to the head throughout their football career. Some of those blows can have the force of a sledgehammer (“RealNatural”). Based on a research study by Dr. Jesse David, there were 265 concussions reported in the 2012 season, during the 2011 season there were 266 concussions, and 270 concussions in 2010 season (Kacsmar). Past infractions of the NFL have already resulted in over 4,500 forme...
Sports are a crucial part of an individual 's character. Counter arguments made against having sports at schools are getting more and more public. The arguments make people, think again about having students play sports. Sports are useful because they give players skills they can use on and off the field: strength, leadership, and confidence.
You see sports everywhere, on your TV and even your local park. The value of sports in the average American is astronomical, sports is a major priority in people’s life. Sports teaches young kids how to be successful (and not successful) at life. There is so much that goes into sports that people who never have played will never understand. With each sport there is specific skill that one must master to be good, and with that takes hours and hours of hard work. You can talk about a certain individual’s skill and capabilities that make him great, but the real value of sports lies within a person. Sports creates determination and a competiveness that can be used in other areas of life, not just sports. There are millions of kids who attempt to become professional athletes but as the level of competition increases the number of athletes decreases, very few of them ever becoming a professional athlete but they are able to take what they have learned from sports into different professions in life. When a kid spends hours in the backyard perfecting his swing it can translate to the kid spending hours of hard work in his job. Companies and business like to hire ex-athletes because they already know what kind of person they are, hardworking and
Nonetheless, some parents are still very reluctant to put their kids in football or rugby. This, I believe, is why high contact sports could eventually perish. Fewer and fewer kids are playing sports each year where there is an elevated risk of a head injury or concussion. (Paine) Parents do not want to gamble with their children’s mental ability and thus deny their children the opportunity to participate in high contact sports. In some sports, they have changed all sorts of rules and almost completely changed the game to ensure player safety. For instance, Hockey Canada called for a rule change to delay body checking in minor hockey. Instead of having the kids learn how to hit in PeeWee (ages 11-12), they have pushed it back an age group to Bantam (Ages 13-15). (CBC Sports) Parents were becoming too nervous about placing their children into a sport where there was hitting or hard body interaction for absolutely no reason. Why spend thousands of dollars for your child to play a contact sport and risk having them injured when there is little chance of making it as a professional athlete. Essentially, contact sports are becoming less popular among younger children and
For instance, from "Study of former NFL Players Highlights Risks of Tackling Too Young", ""Other research has shown that the brain undergoes key periods of development during childhood leading up to the age of 12 in males"…" This quote displays that the brain grows a lot at a young age and the growth can be affected by playing football. From "49ers' Chris Borland Retiring at 24, Wary of Head Trauma", "Borland is leaving football, and the promise of NFL stardom and piles of money could not change his mind. He was worried about head trauma." One can infer, the player was terrified of what may happen to his brain if he continued to play. Critics may say that brain injuries don't happen often and there is a slim chance of it occurring. However, as stated in "Study of former NFL Players Highlights Risks of Tackling Too Young", " players between 9 and 12 are exposed to an average of 240 head impacts in a single football season." It is clear, football causes multiple brain injuries, and some can be very
?The harder and more intense youth sports get the more kids put in danger, more kids becoming bullied and more kids feeling like they have been just mentally or physically drained. What's going to happen in the future if we raise this generation the way we have begun too? Young athletes are being pushed past limits and put in danger by how intense youth sports have become.
Playing competitive sports affect young people in a good way. They are good because you have that commitment and now its hard to back down. In the "no" section of 'Have Youth Sports Become Too Intense?", it states "Intense training promotes self-confidence, self-discipline, and commitment." Student athletes can agree with all of this because it teaches discipline and a lot of other things. Parents can disagree with my reason, because they don't want their child to go through with intense training. They think it's way too much for the child.
According to Jason M. Breslow, players that receive repetitive blows to the head while playing football are more susceptible to life-threatening health concerns after their respective playing careers. Breslow’s decision to speak out about this controversial topic in his article with PBS may be extremely valuable with regards to recent legal actions filed against the National Football League, the NFL. This article may also be critical to those people who are debating whether to continue their playing careers, and to those who are considering picking up the sport for the first time. Breslow initiates the conversation by pointing out that an astronomical amount of NFL players who reported deteriorating conditions such as memory loss and depression
The average family spends $100-$500 a month on sports. People have been doing sports for ever. Some people would be very angry if schools decided to get rid of them. Sports are dangerous though. They are causing parents to pressure their kids, students are becoming sleep deprived, and they are dangerous even though they can be healthy in some ways. Youth sports are harmful to students because they can be parents are pressuring their kids, they are dangerous, and many students are becoming sleep deprived.
youth sports [were] the one haven for good sportsmanship," says Darrell Burnett, a clinical child psychologist and youth sports psychologist. "Not anymore. It's not just a game anymore." With technology (etc) distracting our children with violence and so on, we cannot afford to ruin what sports may do for them. With sports being just one of the few things left that can contribute to success in life, education, and health, parents need not to put any sort of unnecessary pressure on their kids at such a young age, or any age for that matter, ever.
Sports can help many at- risk youths. In order to participate in sports you need to be committed and willing to work hard. You also have to learn to respect others and accept that winning isn’t the only measure of success. Losing can build character as well. When youth participate in a sports they enjoy, they are less likely to engage in behaviors that are harmful or dangerous to themselves and others. It is for these reasons schools should strive to maintain athletic programs for their students.
So, considering that high school sports do give kids an opportunity to expand socially, keep them in shape, and healthy, an opportunity to make many friends, and a shot at getting a scholarship, and making it to the professional level in their sport. But speaking long term the negative effects are more in the sense it could damage a student permanently, from an academic level to a physiological level. Also most of the positive things people would argue aren’t guaranteed to happen or isolate them from the negative effects. But when it comes to the negative side a student would need to go through some of does stages maybe not all but for sure some. To sum it all up, high school sports are more negative on a student than a positive even though people tend to see only the positive things that can come from

It 's been outrageous , how many kids get injured per year playing youth sports for school and organizations. The youth who play sports receive plenty medical attention throughout the year due to injuries cause from actions made occuring in games. Health plays a big part in sports because if your are are not healthy many things can go wrong with the body including dehydration, heart problems , and muscle spasm. Playing a sport can be very hard to juggle with school and also getting talked down by coaches and parents. Dehydration is a high possibility because of outside sports that happen in the spring/summer and playing and practicing in humid conditions that you are not well prepared for can be bad and there will be consequences. Parents and
Sports to many people are means of entertainment and a good way to maintain a healthy body and mind. It is true that sports may not be able to cater to everyone, but even still there are various ways to enjoy sports, and they matter to a diverse population. Sports can be enjoyed by various people whether they are athletes, fans, or coaches. One argument that is made against sports is that they are just meaningless games. This idea can be refuted because sports have underlying meanings to so many different people. Another argument is that the pressure of sports causes a high risk of substance abuse. Those are just a few of the arguments critics of sports make, but there are several more due to the complexity of the debate, although, this also implies that there are many arguments explaining why sports do matter. Those arguments outweigh the others. This means that even though sports may not be able to cater to everyone and they can have negative impacts, sports matter to a lot of people, and they can have even more positive impacts.
