The theory of writing is a broad topic that can be defined in many ways. There are multiple aspects to this topic and they all help answer the question: “What is good or effective writing?”. Some of the key features that contribute to good/effective writing include a strong thesis, brainstorming, outlines, drafts, peer reviews or critiques, grammar, a large, colorful vocabulary, and strong sources with complete citations. Not all of these things need to be present for the writing to be good or effective, but they provide the proper groundwork for it and help make a paper more credible. In order to make sure the writing in the paper is good/effective, it needs to be worked through multiple times and reviewed or critiqued by others. One way of working on drafts is to focus on one point of the paper at a time rather than focusing on the paper as a whole. The final draft is where everything should be looked at as a cohesive piece and where one should make sure everything meshes together in an organized manner. The original draft may be revised multiple times before the paper is complete and many corrections can be made. From draft to draft some subtopics may be removed and others may be added in order to make the paper a good piece of writing and strengthen what is being said about the main topic. It is important to be sure that all of the subtopics focus on the main point or relate back to it in some way and that they are not random or irrelevant. It is important to make sure that the writing is consistent and flows easily.
Grammar and vocabulary can make or break a good paper. All of the information in a paper can be strong but if the grammar is weak and there are wrong forms of words used the writer is unlikely to be taken seriously. It is important to use a wide range of vocabulary when writing and use intriguing and vibrant words that grab the attention of the reader.
