During my time in this class I found that my skills as a writer were getting better with each essay. While conducting my research for the third essay, the research-supported cause/effect essay, I found that I may have had too much information. At first I struggled with the thesis statement, as I couldn’t decide which direction to take on my topic, aerial archeology. Narrowing results and finding the ideal way to proceed I found a good thesis statement and began to use the research and knowledge of the subject to form my essay. I could not be more pleased with how the essay turned out, and now understand just how important a good topic and thesis statement are to a good essay.

I had begun to free write a good bit and thought I had a solid thesis statement. I found out that after reading the articles, journals, and listening to Ted Talks, that my thesis statement was totally wrong. The original would not only be a terrible way to start, but would lead the reader to believe I was going to be talking about something totally different throughout the essay. My thesis statement changed five times before I finally was happy with what I had. I truly believe that the most important part of this essay was the research portion. I thought that I knew enough about the topic of aerial imagery, satellite usage, and archeology that I would have no issue in completing the assignment in short order. After finding that imaging being used today can actually detect what type of object lay buried under the ground, I was taken aback. I have continued in the research portion even though the essay is complete. I found that I needed to completely re-do my paper. The thesis in the rough draft was unclear, thus, I wrote a clearer more concise thesis. The rough draft I completed seemed to be all over the place, and nowhere pacific. I needed to make the changes in my commentary essay, because the draft was rushed, full of grammar errors, and not clear to the reader. Sometimes, as a writer, you have to keep going back to the drawing board. I had a bit of difficulty with this particular essay, however, with the revisions in place, I feel more confident.
Both passages concern the same topic, the Okefenokee Swamp. Yet, through the use of various techniques, the depictions of the swamp are entirely different. While Passage 1 relies on simplicity and admiration to publicize the swamp, Passage 2 uses explicitness and disgust to emphasize the discomfort the swamp brings to visitors.
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
This week in my science class, Reading and Writing Science, we studied Archeology. Archeology is a field that requires the background information of history and the scientific methods of science. This profession, like most others, is very susceptible to the dangerous of human error. Through my own experience in class after viewing seven, foreign pictures, I have learnt that archeology has to do almost entirely with human observations and perspectives. After a body or an artifact is dug up, it is the job of archeologists to figure out as much as they can about the different objects. Because humans are not omnipotent creatures, sometimes they are wrong in their assumptions and conclusions on the history of these artifacts. After revisiting the pictures and being told the story and professional findings of each one, I too found there were errors in my observations; sometimes I omitted some artifacts and made unknown prejudice or cultural assumptions on the deceased individuals, which in turn caused me to interpret the evidence incorrectly.

On this essay the main difficult I had was failure to discuss one topic statement in one paragraph. On each paragraphs there were a mix up idea that it was difficult for a reader to fully understand the main message on each paragraph. The other difficulty I had was using a proper punctuation. I have tried to address those issues with reading English punctuation resources and also from a wonderful feedback I got from my professor. At the beginning of the year, I wrote a paper, checked for grammatical errors and thought I was done. After learning about the recursive writing process my process for writing papers changed drastically. My original thesis for the researched position paper was “Despite some people’s belief that technology is progressively destroying humanity, it is evident that technology’s advancements have greatly benefited human connection due to its contributions to improving education, health, and communication.” However, after writing the 5-page paper I used the recursive writing process to consider, inquire, proofread, and reconsider my essay’s content. Later, deciding my thesis was too broad, I narrowed my thesis to only focusing on education, rewrote the five page paper and tried the recursive writing process again until I achieved a paper I thought represented the best of my ability. A second area in which I improved was critical reading. The unique pieces picked for blog discussions exposed me to new content and the new perspectives from my peers. I found the blog discussion to be refreshing and inspired me to think critically from multiple perspectives. The blog discussion on environmental racism was particularly controversial. Many of the mistakes I would have deemed inconsequential in the past resembles glaring flaws now. The introduction and conclusion paragraphs were where the most work was done. In the introduction, I inserted a hook and blended the paragraph together. I accomplished this by adding transition words and changing the tense to fit the rest of the essay. In the conclusion, I completely started over. The original was bland, boring, and just plain repetitive. In the revised version, I outlined the essay, restated the thesis, and ended by suggestion other applications.
In the second essay I used the writing process and the outcome was way better. So I learned that so things are there to be learned and that will benefit you in college. Also I learned to be responsible when it comes to grades, turn in assignments due in class, and many other things. I learned this lesson because one day I didn’t turned in an assignment on time and the teacher said that it was a 0 for the day. In high school some teacher, like Ms. Perez, give the students the chance to turn in work the next day, but at that time I realized I was not in high school. So I got my schedule of homework on point and I decided to turn in all my college work on time. The outcome was good grades on assignment and not misunderstood with the instructor. “Be on time if you can’t be there early.” Said by Robin Sharma. Being on time is important to any individual, going into a date, to work and to class. You have to be responsible on be on time wherever they cited you, it is a sign of respect. I had written my essay in favor of pursuing higher education, coupled with a counterargument against Jon Spayde's informal "in-the-streets" definition of education. However, my thesis had not captured my argument as precisely as I had hoped. In addition, there were times where my ideas were forcibly stretched, and appear wordy or repetitive as a result. If I had more unique ideas, I would be able to write more paragraphs which would be more focused to meet the page count instead. I have enjoyed learning about the topics we have learned about, from education to this sports unit. Writing has never been my strong suit and I think that this class has helped me. I like learning about the different styles of argument and what devices to use when making the strongest claim. Throughout the education essay, I learned a lot about my writing and that I write better, when I am enthusiastic about the subject. I was and am very interested in these topics, and I love trying to relate the topics back to my personal experiences. In the next semester, I hope to read closer into the text and take better notes. I think that these two major essays would have been easier if I had notes to reflect on and review, rather than taking notes for the essay. Thematic analysis is espoused to be the foundational approach to qualitative analysis and methods (Saunders et al., 2016 as stated in Braun and Clarke, 2006: 78) and it is a useful method used to identify and analyse the order and patterns of qualitative data (Attride-Stirling, 2001). Qualitative research method depicts the correlation that exists between data and events, creating the pictorial representation of what one thinks a given data says (Saunders et al., 2016). They also opined that, qualitative data analysis is cogent, interactive and iterative. Also, Joana and Jill (2011) and Saunders et al (2016) postulate that, qualitative research brings meanings from words and images as opposed to numbers. However, despite its robustness and rigour of its application, it is skewed more to the interpretivist ideologies since researchers draw conclusion from participants and the hypothesis being forecasted (Joana and Jill, 2011; Saunders et al., 2016).
I was never a person that liked to write essays. This semester I really enjoyed writing those essays and specially because I was learning new things while writing them. Some things I could do to improve my essay writing are not to wait till the last three or four days before I turn my essay in to start doing it. Another thing I will do is if I forget how to do something or about some rule in the common errors I made I will just go back to all the lessons I printed out to have as reference. I think those will help me allot. And one last thing I will do to improve my writing is to try my best not to confuse all those words I got confused. I will do my best to learn each word and its rule of where it goes so I won’t have the same mistakes I had this semester.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
