Thermal Pollution is the degradation of water quality by any process that changes ambient water temperatures and divulges it from the normal or preferred temperature conditions. Usually it is associated with the rise in the temperature of the water bodies which might either be a stream, lake, river or an ocean. It happens due to the discharge of heated water from industrial processes like generation of electricity in thermal power plants. The increases in the ambient temperature might also happen in streams which can be associated with the removal of shading vegetation along the banks or with sedimentation making the water body even more turbid. The reason being that these plants draw water from nearby source to keep machines cool for their proper functioning. After that the water is then released back to the source which has considerably higher temperature than usual. This water with increased temperatures when is released to the natural sources of water bodies the water temperature rises sharply. This alters the oxygen levels in the water. When the amount of oxygen present isn’t enough it hampers and degrades the quality and longevity of life of the marine and aquatic animals living and surviving underwater. This process has the capability of wiping away the streamside vegetation, which depends on the constant levels of oxygen and temperatures. When these natural conditions are altered it leads to heavy disruption of the proper functioning. Industries are helping in decreasing the quality of life for these marine based life forms. They prevent sunlight from falling directly on the lakes, ponds and rivers. Thus due to deforestation these water bodies are then directly exposed to solar radiation. They end up absorbing more heat and consequently their temperatures raises.
• Runoff from Paved Surfaces – there is a considerable amount of urban runoff which has been acting as a causal phenomenon for thermal pollution. Urban runoff is discharged to the surface waters from paved structures like roads and parking lots has the capability to make the water warmer when drained to them. Mostly during summer seasons, the pavements get really hot. This creates warm runoff that gets into the urban sewer systems and then finally drained into the water bodies.
• Soil Erosion – Soil erosion is equally responsible for thermal pollution. Consistent soil erosion has lead to the rise of the water levels in the water bodies exposing and making them more susceptible to sunlight.
