Sports drinks are used to supplement the loss of electrolytes, water and energy after exercise, helping the athlete recover quicker by replacing the key ionic-substances back into the body. They are designed to give the athlete an equal amount of carbohydrates and fluids to provide an almost instant rehydration and refuel during physical activity. This essay will explain the purpose of the contents of sports drinks and their uses in the human body.
There are three main types of sports drinks; Isotonic, Hypotonic and Hypertonic. A hypotonic drink will contain a lesser concentration of sugars and electrolytes in comparison with a human body - meaning it would be absorbed faster than water. They contain more solvent than solute, meaning it would be less concentrated than inside of a cell. Most sports drinks are classified as Isotonic, meaning the concentration of electrolytes is similar to that found inside the cells, it will be absorbed at the same rate as water. These drinks contain equal amounts of solute and solvent, meaning it will be equal to that inside a cell. And lastly Hypertonic, there are were the concentrate is greater than that found in a human's body fluids. Hypertonic drinks are the slowest rate of absorption but offer the highest dosage of energy out of the three. This drink contains more solute than solvent, resulting in a more concentrated solution.
Sports drinks should contain 4-8% (4-8g/100ml) carbohydrate and 23-69mg/100ml sodium (American College of Sports 2007) to provide the best amount of fluid and fuel delivery. Studies have shown that sports drinks that contain Proteins and amino acids (in a concentration of 2%) provide a superior recovery in specific exercise scenarios. (Stearns et al. 2010) Carboh...

...AA, 2013) But what drink to use is dependent on what you want to achieve when doing the physical activity. If you are attempting to do exercising to lose weight, or are doing it in short bursts (around 1hr), water is the way to go. For most people, “their fluid requirements can be met by water” (Professor Clare Collins, DAA, 2013), and they will generally not be sweating enough to lose many electrolytes. On the other hand, if you are an athlete and need to perform at your peak for a longer period of time, sports drinks are the way to go. When exercising, muscles use the stores of carbohydrates for fuel. These store will become depleted after around 90min, at which point fat is used instead. Fat is not an efficient source of energy, and the performance will drop indefinitely. The carbs in sports drinks help to keep athletes at their peak for longer periods of time.
Briefly describe an alternative technique that could be used to measure the amount of glucose within sports drinks. (5 points)

...ble in a Gatorade bottle but these are the most important ones. The most chemistry that is present in sports drinks and in this case, Gatorade, is seen through the electrolytes. In a nutshell electrolytes are substances that are soluble in water and after being completely dissolved, they give ions. Our body consists of Cation and Anion electrolytes which are nutritionally referred to as Macrominerals. As stated before the balance level of electrolytes is every crucial for the human body, and if imbalanced the person can have serious and life threatening issues. But the only way to restore our electrolytes level is by consuming these sports drinks, so this is the main reason as for why even though the sports drinks have some negative aspects to them they are one of the cheapest and easiest ways a person can get the required electrolytes for their body.
Through this evidence, Gatorade is the most essential drink on the planet when it comes to revitalizing and replenishing the body. This is why top athletes in professional sports endorse and use this produce. The commercial for Gatorade ask “Is it in you?” Gatorade and other numerous sports drinks have become a very important part of today’s sports market, and it seems to be with good reason. Research has confirmed that for the most part, the claims made by companies such as Gatorade about the effectiveness of their sports drinks are true. Gatorade is a useful sports drink.
As Fink points out, Carbohydrates, in the form of glucose, are the main source of fuel for all physical activity. Fats on the other hand are primarily used as a fuel source while resting and when performing moderately to low intensity exercises. (Fink, 2012, p.3) It’s these facts that are so significant. The event she participates in will be fairly short yet very intense with that in mind as an 800-meter track athlete the Carbohydrates are going to serve her the best. She will require immediate as well as a short sustained use of energy for her event. While she will be using both energy systems Fink states she will mainly be using anaerobic energy system which “is a major contributor to intense activities that last from 1 to 3 minutes.” (Fink, 2012, p. 50)
To find the answer we performed an experiment. We decided to put the drinks to the test by exercising, and then seeing how well we shoot 10 free throws. But after we exercised we drank either Powerade or Gatorade. We would then collect data, analyze it, and ultimately find out which drink is more effective. When I finished working out on Day 1, I drank Gatorade. I made 8/10. On Day 2, I drank Powerade after exercising and shot 7/10. And since the results were very similar I decided I would exercise and shoot 10 more on Day 3. But instead of drinking a sports drink I just drank water. I made 7/10. This data was very interesting. It shows Gatorade improved performance more, but nothing really stood out. So unless you plan on running a marathon or other strenuous athletic tasks, it will not really matter if you drink Powerade or Gatorade. Our experiment even showed, no matter how many fancy sports drinks come out, water is always a very reliable option when it comes to regaining lost
Barnard, J. (1992) Caffeine in Sport: influence of endurance exercise on the urinary caffeine Concentration.
After PDB acquired Crescent Pure in July of 2013, its management team was faced with a decision when discussing how the product was to be marketed -- some felt that the drink’s energizing ingredients would make it a better fit as an energy drink, while others felt that its hydrating elements would make it a better fit as a sports drink (Quelch, Zalsoh 2014). Crescent Pure was founded in 2008, as founder Peter Hooper wanted “a drink that would refresh, energize and enhance mental focus” (pg 2). However, Crescent Pure will be PDB’s first entry in the U.S., sports and/or energy beverage markets; therefore, in discussing the
In 2002, a group of Australian researchers published a paper entitled the "Effect of different protocols of caffeine intake on metabolism and endurance performance". Caffeine use during sporting events has become much more popular and has widely studied. The purpose of the research was to examine the work increasing (ergogenic) effects of differing regiments of caffeine on metabolism and performance while simulating the typical nutritional preparation an athlete would do for a race. The study also sought to examine the effect of timing of caffeine intake, comparing results when caffeine was given before an event (precaf) to results from caffeine given during an event (durcaf). In addition, the researchers wanted to understand the practice of endurance athletes drinking defizzed Coca-Cola towards the end of a race. It was widely observed that many triathletes and marathoners feel they derive a boost from consuming Coca-Cola in the final stages of an event as a replacement to sports drinks.
Sweat excessively while exercising and you 'll lose water and electrolyte but if you drink energy drink after that just to have more energy you 'll only dehydrate yourself more.
When more water leaves the body then comes in, dehydration is occurring ("Safe Drinking Water: Tap Water, Bottled Water, & Water Filters.”). Without the water you need you can’t regulate your body temperature and your body can’t lubricate you joints ("Athletes: The Importance of Good Hydration.”). Being a dehydrated athlete won’t let you preform at your highest level ("Athletes: The Importance of Good Hydration.”). Because being hydrated helps transport nutrients to give you energy and keep your body healthy ("Athletes: The Importance of Good Hydration.”). It may cause you to experience fatigue, muscle cramps, and dizziness ("Athletes: The Importance of Good
Competition also presents itself in original sports drinks, such as Gatorade (Pepsi) and Powerade (Coca Cola). Furthermore, premixed alcoholic drinks like the Smirnoff range form part of the competition.
Innumerous scientists confirm that nutrition and dietary supplementation can deeply affect molecular and cellular processes that occur in the body during the exercise and the recovery process. This brief review analyzes the potential for performance enhancement through protein supplementation ingestion, and the importance of nutrition education for sports supplement users.
