My first exposure in using healthcare equipment for patient care was during my training as an optometric technician. I see patients for screenings before their exam and perform automated refraction, retina photography, and visual field testing. These tests, although preliminary, require the proper positioning of the patient and efficient communication to give directions. I strive to create a safe and friendly atmosphere for the patients while gathering sufficient information about their history and test results. I pay great attention to details, both in what the patient tells me and what I see on the photos. While I am not diagnosing the patient as an optometric tech, my organization and diligence to details will be beneficial as a sonographer.
Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. As described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this examination is referred to as an ultrasound, sonogram, or echocardiogram. The high-frequency sound waves emitted from the handheld device, called a transducer, bounce back creating an echo and therefore produce an image that can be viewed on the sonographers computer screen. This image provides the sonographer and physician with an internal image of the patient’s body that will be used in the diagnosis. The most familiar use of ultrasound is used in monitoring pregnancies and is provided by obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, who also provide imaging of the female reproductive system. Other types of sonography include; abdominal sonography, breast sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, neurosonography and cardiovascular sonography. Due to the vast nature of uses in sonography, most professionals study one field that they choose to specialize in. Diagnostic medical sonography is a rapidly growing field because of the increase in medical advances. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.
Everyday life in a hospital is complete and absolute chaos. There are doctors and nurses running everywhere to treat patients, ambulances coming through every so often, children and patients crying, and surgeons telling a family that their loved one did not make it. However, outside of all that craziness is an operating room (OR). A place filled with pressure, intensity, high hopes, and stress. There to help control the environment is a surgical technologist. While preparing patients for surgery, surgical technologists manage the equipment and operating room, follow the instructions of the surgeon, and ensure the safety of the patient.
My job contains a great deal of direct patient contact, to say the least. I assist the surgeon in whichever surgery the patient needs. I participate in helping cure, stabilize, comfort, and add to the patients' treatment. In order to be a good surgical tech, you must always be one step ahead of the surgeon, which inquires extensive knowledge of human anatomy and the symptoms that accompany an illness. Identifying anatomical landmarks and the normality of organs are also important qualities to have when assisting in surgery.

Today’s clinical experience truly affected me in multiple ways. I went into this day with an open mind, and was pleased with the patients and the way I was able to conduct myself. This clinical affected me because throughout the day I felt that I experienced many emotions. A few times during my day I did have to fight back tears. I felt I had this emotion because some of the individuals expressed how they wanted to get better in order to get home to their families.

A Diagnostic Medical Sonographer is a type of nurse that uses gel to detect and observe the high-frequency sound waves of the living fetus, heart, abdomen, pelvis, and blood vessels. They prepare the patient for their ultrasound examination by taking in information about the patient’s past about their body and any other operations. They prepare and select the appropriate materials needed for the examination and after everything is assembled, they perform the ultrasound examination on the patient. Most people do not understand just how important x-ray technicians are. An x-ray tech could lead to incorrect diagnoses if they do not fulfill their duties right (Career). They use a lot of different equipment to take images (Spako). X-ray techs use traditional x-ray machines, computerized axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, fluoroscopy, film, and digital mammography (Spako). Luckily, I am very comfortable with patients, which made providing care very easy. I was not afraid to go into other patient’s rooms if they rang for help. I would try my best to help the patients; however, if I needed help I was not afraid to ask a fellow student or nurse on the staff. It is very important to be able to talk to patients and work as a team with fellow coworkers as it made the job easier. On the other hand, I need to go over mother and baby assessments to become more familiar with both. I was able to complete the assessments; I now need to do so in a timelier manner while ensuring I do not forget any key areas. Lastly, it is vital that I continue to go over patient teaching prior to clinical. Being comfortable with the patients made the teaching easier, though I need to become more familiar with all the material that needs to be taught.
