When looking into a criminal event as serious as presented with teacher sex scandals, it is very important to identify the reasons why this crime is taking place and set into motion a plan of action to eliminate other potential perpetrators. The labeling theory suggests that the crime of female teacher sex scandals may have taken place because either the “public” has labeled her role to be provocative or seductive, inappropriately, or that her role as the teacher, has been labeled that way in that position. One reason identified is the “attention” that the teachers are getting from the student, when the student is viewed as the aggressor. “He would always tell me how beautiful I was and how I was a good person on the inside” (Owens, 2015). In this case the teacher was unhappy in her marriage and was being shown attention from one of her students. The teacher describes how she thought it was innocent and playful in the beginning until one day, she let her guard down and the teacher student sexual relationship began. It is not always the teacher aggressing or initializing the relationship, but often the teachers lack of willpower to overcome a teenagers confidence and persistence. This case involves a sophomore at a high school named Christine Franklin, who alleged that she was sexually harassed and abused by a teacher and sports coach by the name of Andrew Hill. These allegations were occurring from 1986-1988, a total of two years. These allegations included Hill having explicit conversations with Franklin, forcing her to kiss him, and forceful intercourse on school grounds. Franklin claimed that she let teachers and administrators know about the harassment and that other students were going through the same harassment. In the article Who is a Teacher, the author made a factual claim about two correlated theories; that students are permitted too much influence over their instructors, and that influence affects female professors to a greater degree than their male counterparts. In 1989, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, a group of popular high school athletes gang raped a mentally impaired 17-year-old girl with a baseball bat and a broom. If this story isn’t disturbing enough, the community of this small close-knit upper class town stated their boys are innocent and the blame was put on the mentally impaired girl. There were even reports that a number of other boys had tried to entice a young woman into the basement a second time to repeat the experience. The news of this tragic indecent was reported 3 months before any arrests were made, the boys had not come forth with any information and kept quiet about the indecent. When interviewed some teenagers stated that the girl “teased them into it” and “she was promiscuous and asked for it.” When the adults of the community were interviewed they stated that “she was always flirting” and “this is Leslie just getting into more trouble” they even said that the girl was to blame for all that happened to her. Why were students protecting these boys? Why were parents not worried about the way they raised their children? Labeling theory and the self-fulfilling prophecy explains that these parents and teenagers were so caught up in the fact that their kids were perfect that they couldn’t believe they would do such a thing without being asked to. Just because these boys were labeled “good guys” the community stood up for them even though the evidence was clear as day. Grave moral transgression had taken place in their town, why were parents concerned about their daughters or the behavior of their children? The town was squeaky clean, high school students dressed in dinner jackets and gowns, the streets, lawns, and houses were almost perfect. It’s easy for sexual harassment and relationship violence to be dismissed as only “adult” issues. On the contrary, these problems have proven to be pervasive in both junior and senior high schools. Although statistics show that “nearly half of students are sexually harassed in school” (Koebler, 2011), sexual harassment and dating violence are not being appropriately addressed in schools and are in essence, being shoved under the table.
