Holding the office of President of the United States means that a person is someone who serves as a symbol or representation for the entire country. They not only represent the country to the rest of the world, but they hold the responsibility of pursuing actions that benefit the U.S. citizens. Due to the office of president being a large responsibility, the person holding the office must be able to complete the job in the best interest of the people, while also conducting actions that will benefit the entire country. A perfect balance between the two is necessary. In the Election of 1912, progressivism was a large interest of the people and the best option for president is Theodore Roosevelt because of his actions in regulating business, standing …show more content…
for the good of the people, and wildlife conservation. Because of his various acts and influences, Roosevelt is the candidate who should receive the class’s endorsement for the presidency in the Election of 1912. Theodore Roosevelt was outstanding in his efforts concerning the regulation of businesses within the United States.
One of his contributions was pushing for the Department of Commerce and Labor to be established, which concerned with controlling the excesses of big business monopolies. The department dissolved monopolies and promoted fair competition between businesses. This allowed for smaller businesses to flourish in the United States. Roosevelt also pushed Congress to pass the Elkins Act, which authorized the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) to impose fines on railroad companies that offered unfair pricing differences. This was needed because farmers were charged more than large businesses for railroad use, with an intention of large businesses gaining an increase in profit. This represents unfair business practices, which Roosevelt stood against. Along with the Elkins Act, came the influence of the Hepburn Act. This act allowed for the government inspection of railroad businesses. Along with influencing many acts, Roosevelt was also the first president to use the Sherman Antitrust Act against large businesses. By pushing for the Department of Commerce, the Elkins Act and the Hepburn Act, Theodore Roosevelt broke up 40 large monopolies in the United States. Through his actions he proved to be the first president to promote fair business …show more content…
practices. Through his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt set a precedent on how the government should treat and have a relationship with the people.
He knew the appeal of the people was needed in order for government initiatives to be successful. Because of this, Roosevelt was the first president to use the power of the media to appeal directly to the American people. His friendly personality, rambunctious family and his many opinions served as good content for the press. He also knew that the media was a good outlet for him to reach out to the people, bypassing political parties and political machines. His outlet was an easy way to develop the approval of the people and establish a relationship with them. His discoveries founded a new way for politicians to communicate their ideas with the people. Along with using the media to promote his causes to the people, Roosevelt also pursued actions for the good of the U.S. people. In the Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Strike, workers demanded to be treated better by their employers. To solve this issue, Roosevelt used his “Big Stick” policy to force the coal business owners to increase their payments by 10% and also limit work days to 9 hours. By his actions, Roosevelt attained a greater relationship with the U.S. people and less of a relationship with large businesses. He became the first president to ever side with the people in a dispute similar to the strike. During his presidency, Roosevelt also established the Food and Drug Administration
and the Meat Inspection Act. The FDA is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the supervision of food and drug products. The administration ensures that these products are safe before public consumption. The Meat Inspection Act makes it a crime to alter or falsely brand meat products, and ensures that meat products are slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions. Both of these acts ensure the wellbeing of the American people and Roosevelt can be credited for influencing both. As an open “Nature Lover”, Theodore Roosevelt was a large promoter of nature conservation. The most predominant act he pushed for concerning conservation, was the Newlands Act of 1902. This act allowed the United States government to sell land in areas such as Arizona with a purpose of providing funds to build dams in west America. The dams were used to provide water for the people in areas such as California. This influenced a population shift to the west coast because there was now an accessible water supply. Roosevelt’s act decreased the population in New England states and provided water for more people in the United States. Other smaller actions accredited to Roosevelt include the protection of 125 acres of forest land to remain untouched and temporarily banning Christmas Trees from the White House. These acts set a precedent for nature conservation for the entire country. In fact, many historians believe that Roosevelt’s greatest accomplishment and most important contribution was nature conservation. His actions gained himself the title of “The First Conservationist President”. "To sit home, read one's favorite paper, and scoff at the misdeeds of the men who do things is easy, but it is markedly ineffective.” is a quote by Roosevelt that represents his life achievements. Through his actions in regulating business, standing for the good of the U.S. people and wildlife conservation Roosevelt was not a man who scoffed at the misdeeds of other men. He took action in dissolving large businesses and giving governmental power back to the citizens of the United States, while also standing for environmental conservation movements. Roosevelt was the first president to stand for all of these causes and for this, he deserves the endorsement of the class for the presidency in the Election of 1912.
Theodore Roosevelt was one of the most influential people in the early 20th century. His leadership style, his reforms, and his personality shaped an America that was rapidly becoming a world power. Theodore Roosevelt is admirably remembered for his energetic persona, his range of interests and achievements, his leadership of the Progressive Movement, his model of masculinity and his “cowboy” image (). He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the short-lived Progressive Party of 1912 (). Before becoming President, he held offices at the municipal, state, and federal level of government (). Roosevelt’s achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. His legacy lives on as one of greatest leaders in American history.
Roosevelt and Wilson were both strong believers in Progressivism. The Progressive movement was time of eliminating corruption and reform. Roosevelt wanted a stronger central government to help the people. He used his position as president as a “bully pulpit”, in that he would influence public opinion through his popularity. Roosevelt often took a more aggressive approach to domestic policy in that he would go against the Old Guard Republicans, whereas Wilson was one to speak directly in front of congress in order to gain their support. Roosevelt became president towards the beginning of the progressive movement, and so he had a harder time trying make reforms than Wilson did. Also, by telling the public that he was only going to run one term, his chances of running for a second term was greatly diminished, which is one of the reasons why Wilson came ahead in the election of 1912. Roosevelt promoted New Nationalism, while Wilson promoted New Freedom. They were very popular presidents in the eyes of the American people. Especially Roosevelt, who liked to vocalize his opinions and open up his private life to them. Throughout the early 1900s, Roosevelt and Wilson both were leaders in the progressive movement, with their own spin on how it should be done. The two presidents altered labor and large businesses, civil rights, and ultimately the role of the federal government.
Assuming the Presidency at the depth of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped the American people regain faith in themselves. He brought hope as he promised prompt, vigorous action, and asserted in his Inaugural Address, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." Despite an attack of poliomyelitis, which paralyzed his legs in 1921, he was a charismatic optimist whose confidence helped sustain the American people during the strains of economic crisis and world war.
...e worker had to wear uniform, work with better equipment, and follow steps of inspection. Although they got better condition, but they were still treated badly from owners, they would be kicked out if they were sick or diseased or not able to work. Roosevelt was a progressive president, his success in Meat Inspection Act reformed meat industry. With Roosevelt, business elements were always the decisive factor, and it could be better if he paid any attention on civil elements.
Theodore Roosevelt was a man uniquely fitted to the role that he played in American
After the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt inherited a growing empire when he took office in 1901. The U.S. had annexed Hawaii in 1898 and Spanish-American War granted the U.S. control of the Philippines. It also led the U.S. to establish a protectorate over Cuba and grant territorial status for Puerto Rico. By taking on the Philippine Islands as an American colony after the Spanish-American War he had ended the U.S.'s isolation from international politics. Theodore Roosevelt believed that nations should pursue a strenuous life and do their part to maintain peace and order. It was also a belief that civilized nations had the duty of modernizing the barbarous ones. He also pushed for a bigger army and navy and by the end of his presidency he had built the U.S. Navy into a major force at sea.
Not only did Theodore Roosevelt push to better himself, he also pushed America to better itself and to improve itself as a country, that impact that he made in America still shows today.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the early 1900s? The turn of the century left Americans feeling more optimistic about life (Woog 4). People were honest and kind (Woog 5). The 1900s can be remembered as a happy time, but also a time of hardship for some Americans (Woog 5). Theodore Roosevelt, President 1901-1910, guided America in a way in which he created laws to help the social and economic problems of the time as well as improving politics by being a strong leader and recognizing the true needs of the country.
Theodore Roosevelt was one of our greatest presidents. He created the FDA and improved the position of the presidency greatly. Before Theodore came to be president, the position of presidency was slow and wasn’t very interesting so he made the executive branch more powerful by starting new reforms and a strong foreign policy. The life of a president is hard. It is full of stress, responsibilities, and a strong dedication the welfare of your country. Theodore had to deal with all of these presidential stresses, taking up much of his time. Do you know, though, that despite being a president, he led a life of excitement and freedom that many other presidents had never before experienced? Theodore, “Teddy” as his first wife Alice called him, Roosevelt was more than just our president, he was a dedicated author who wrote many books; he was also a rancher, and, surprisingly, he was a big time hunter. Even though Theodore Roosevelt was a president, his life was filled with exciting adventure, times of hardships, responsibilities to many, and influences upon many government positions.
He did this by increasing the power of the presidency, “by taking the position that the president could exercise any right not specifically denied him by the Constitution.” Theodore Roosevelt saw the president’s role to defend the citizens by regulating businesses and breaking up trusts that had gained too much power, defend the very resources of the country by establishing 50 wildlife sanctuaries, 5 national parks, 18 national monuments, and placing more than 230 acres of American soil under federal protection, and lastly increased the role of the president in foreign policy by heavily engaging in foreign affairs. Before Theodore Roosevelt, Congress was the most powerful branch of the government, but with the help of Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency it helped establish an influential and reliable executive branch. During both the Progressive Era and New Deal Era, many American citizens faced low pay.
Presidents create the leadership position that has a say in all of the decisions for a country. In this era, many judgments of situations needed to be decided, and it made it blatantly obvious as to who made the wrong or right decisions. In the political cartoon published by Washington Post in 1907, Roosevelt wanted to convey that it was necessary to determine what trusts were good or bad. Trusts were made to shut down businesses and he felt he had the power to run these options and opinions. After some violated the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, Teddy really took a step forward in proving his trust-busting techniques. In a speech that Roosevelt made in February of 1912, he expressed his belief on the importance of the people participating in direct election of Senators through his speech. This importance that he felt was necessary eventually led on to the 17th Amendment, which was passed the year after. In Herbert Croly’s New Republic, Wilson received quite a bit of loathing from Croly as he expressed his opinions. The supporters of Wilson definitely disagreed with an article like this, and it was unacceptable to some. Whether liked or disliked, the presidents during this period made an impact on our nation, and the people wanted to be heard for the rights they wanted.
In the end Theodore Roosevelt handled the Coal Strike of 1902 in a very intelligent manner. For the first time in American history, a president didn’t side with the business owners (David Kennedy). He also set a precedent for handling future strikes. Negotiation was now the preferred way to handle a strike (Grossman). Roosevelt said in a speech during the strike, “I speak for neither the operators nor the miners but for the general public (Grossman).” The federal government was now tasked with the responsibility of protecting the interests of the public during a strike.
Along with reforms by citizens the presidents of the Progressive era also fought to make things right. President Roosevelt was a war hero, and a great leader of the United States. During his role as...
Industrialization led to the rise of big businesses at the expense of the worker. Factory laborers faced long hours, low wages, and unsanitary conditions. The large corporations protected themselves by allying with political parties. The parties, in turn, were controlled by party leaders, rather than by the members. Many people felt that all power rested with the politicians and businessmen. Reformers known as Progressives attempted to undo the problems caused by industrialization. The Progressive movement sought to end the influence of large corporations, provide more rights and benefits to workers, and end the control possessed by party leaders. At the national level, Progressivism centered on defeating the power of large businesses. The Progressive Era was a period in American history in which improving working conditions, exposing corruption, improving the way of life, expanding democracy, and making reforms were the objectives at hand. With the emergence of the Progressive Era two important figures gradually emerged as well. One of the mentioned figures, President Theodore Roosevelt, succeeded to the Presidency when President McKinley was assassinated in 1901, helped the Progressive movement greatly. Another figure, although a Democrat is Woodrow Wilson who much like Roosevelt still pushed for progressive reforms. Each of the mentioned figures did their share in re-establishing a “fair” government that would work for the people and not for the large corporations and mon...
