There are definitely themes and idea that the author portrayed through not only the title of the text but as well as most of the characters. Robert C. O’Brien named the novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H. He purposely chose to put her name first in the title because I believe that it shows how important she is as a character and to the plot of the story. Throughout the entire novel, Mrs. Frisby shows the readers that she is the mother that would do anything for her family, a widower willing to put her life on the line for them.
The story begins as Mrs. Frisby trying to figure a plan to move her family into their summer home, but with her youngest son being so sick, it risks his health even more. She is first depicted as a very caring mother as she is described in the first chapter; “although she was a widow (her husband had died only the preceding summer), Mrs. Frisby was able, through luck and hard work, to keep her family-there were four children-happy and well fed.” (O’Brien pg. 4) Also later, “Mrs. Frisby woke up early, as she always did.” (O’Brien pg. 5) These two sentences show us right away that she is a dedicated single mother who tried her best to take care of her …show more content…

Frisby’s brave actions. They also show that courage and a mother’s duty is not a small weight to carry. It really shows readers the importance of motherhood. Although Mrs. Frisby’s actions clearly show us the importance of her character, the importance of the other characters are stressed as well. With Jeremy’s help and the rats of N.I.M.H. show the readers that team work and friendship are two crucial aspects to consider in life. Without the supporting characters, Mrs. Frisby would have never been able to move her family into their summer home. So it is not only a story about motherhood and the braveness of Mrs. Frisby but it also is one of how important teamwork and friendship
