In Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, “Annabel Lee”, the main theme is love because of the narrator’s feelings expressed towards Annabel Lee; I will prove this by looking at the repetition of certain words and the context that are used in the poem. The poem begins with the lines, “It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea”, it gives off a setting that is similar to a fairy tale, legend, or of an older time period. According to current research, “Kingdom by the sea starts off like a fairy tale” (Shmoop). The audience now begins to get an image of a place with big castles, houses, and a type of language that isn 't recent. The speaker also began by introducing keywords that will aid to his tragedy. The keywords are “kingdom by the sea” …show more content…
Proceeded by the line, “ I was a child and she was a child, in this kingdom by the sea”, now establishing that they are both children and showing just how young and pure they were. This can also begin to worry the audience that while they were deep in love; and it might not last because of their youth. “The kingdom by the sea” is also repeated again and that starts to display how Edgar Allan Poe loved using repetition to create a spooky or hypnotic aura. However, the speaker continues the stanza with a line that utters, “loved with a love that was more than love”. The young boy is now describing how intense and beautiful their affection towards each other was for being so youthful. The use of the word love also drills into the audience’s mind that these two are serious about their love and it isn 't some children 's game they …show more content…
Yes! That was the reason, as all men know.” He’s continued with his delusion that the angels are forever to blame, and that was their goal all along and everyone knows it. How he yells out “yes!” just expressing that he’s becoming like a madman that had a spontaneous and fantastic idea, and he says that every man knows this, so he believes that everyone else is also in his same delusion. Pryor helps these thoughts by saying “He used a frantic tone by placing an exclamation mark” (Pryor). He now mentions Annabel Lee’s death, “ chilling and killing my Annabel Lee”, presently he’s accepted her death, but he does circle back to it just to add to how terrible of a moment it was for him, giving the reader an understanding of how her death is like a song that is forever placed on
Edgar Allan Poe’s poems The Raven, And Annabel Lee Contrast in many different ways but i'll be highlighting three of them in this paper. The mood of these poems is sad because their true loves die in very different settings and how they handle the grief is different from one going totally insane to the other man being calm and almost a little light hearted about it.
Some believe that Annabel Lee was written for his wife, but others think that the love of his life, Sarah Emira Royster, that he was parted from as a youth of 18, was the true recipient for the beautiful but morbid poem. . Mr. Poe was scheduled to wed the same Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton just days before his death. “The significance of “Annabel Lee” to their relationship may, however, be reflected in the account of his desire to have it published for the first time with their wedding announcement in the local papers. Since Poe died just ten days before they would have been married, the poem was instead first printed at the end of his obituary written by Rufus Griswold in the New York Daily Tribune” (Poe Museum)
In "Annabel Lee", a young man is mourning the death of a beautiful young lady. Even though the woman had died quite some time ago, the man is still in melancholy. He misses her terribly and constantly thinks of how she was she was tragically taken from him by the angels who were jealous of their love, and by her family who didn't think the he himself was capable of bringing her to her final resting place. He loved Annabel Lee more than anyother human can love another. The following quote tells the reader how much he loves her and shows that he would do anything for her, even if that means sleeping by her tomb, each and every night. "And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side of my darling, my life and my bride, in her sepulchre there by the sea, in her tomb by the side of the sea."
‘The Sea’ followed a different people and it also gave the reader some back story on things and people that were brought up through the book.
A mutual understanding towards many of Poe’s works is that the loss of a lover brings about insanity, but the truth is that in Poe’s works the loss of a young lover leads to depression. This is a theme that is played out in more than one of Poe’s works, but it is most prevalent in the depressing poem Annabel Lee. The speaker is conflicted with losing what is his whole world and his childhood lover. While all is well with both him and the girl alive, an insurmountable depression takes hold once the winds blow out to carry her to the grave. This is a theme that plays out often in his works and has been observed as one of his main inspirations. Within Peter Coviello’s research, he comes to the conclusion that “Within [Poe’s] world, only very young girls, who are not yet encumbered by the revulsions of adult femininity, seem capable of providing a site for stable heterosexual male desire in Poe.” Rather than using a full fledged adult as his lover, he engineered a child into his poem so the lover does not harness the potential to mutate into a monstros...
As the reading above indicates, Poe grieved continuously throughout his life for his sainted “Lenore”. He wrote numerous poems before and after the death of Virginia Clemm to her. “Annabel Lee” was actually written before the death of Virginia as a token of his undying love for her.
Stanzas one and two of the poem are full of imagery. The first stanza sets the scene for the poem “in a kingdom by the sea” (Poe 609) which makes you feel as if the story is going to have a “romantic” (Overview) feel to it. Then Annabel Lee comes into the story with “no other thought than to love and be loved by me” (Poe 609); This sentence is full of imagery in the sense that it makes you feel the immense capacity of love Annabel Lee had for the speaker if that was her only thought. In the second stanza the imagery takes a turn that shifts from loving and inviting to pain; The love between Annabel and the speaker was so strong that
The diction of “Annabel Lee” helps create the impression of a fairy tale-like love story. With words such as “maiden” (line 3), “kingdom” (line 8), “beautiful” (line 16), “high-born kinsmen” (line 17), Poe paints a picture of a whimsical, fantastic love story when, in reality, Annabel Lee dies in her girlhood. This is wherein lies the irony: the glamorization of the persona’s love of Annabel Lee
Starting in the first stanza we see that Annabel Lee is referred to specifically as a maiden. Maidens are unmarried women, and the word is often associated with virginity. From this we can conclude that Poe wants to emphasize Annabel Lee’s purity. The word choice in “maiden” lets the reader know early on that this poem is not about lust, but rather love and the genuine connection that comes with it. In the third stanza, as previously discussed, Poe goes out of his way to emphasize that both the narrator and Annabel Lee were children. However, the word choice of “child” is interesting because it is ambiguous whether it is literal or not. By choosing to portray the two lovers as children, Poe once again enforces the themes of purity, innocence, and virginity that children and maidens have in common. Poe wants the reader to understand that there is no sin between the two lovers, only an undying love. Knowing this it is now easy to see why Poe asserts that the angels would be jealous of their love, as the angels would believe only such a pure love should be reserved for God. Continuing to analyze the theme of holiness and purity, even more interesting details can be found in the word choice of sepulchre. A sepulchre is simply a tomb, however the word sepulchre itself is more often associated with religious
The poem "The City in the Sea"is a very gothic poem. Poe also keeps the tone of the entire poem very dark and dim making the theme and setting spooky.. Because of the life that Poe had to overcome, the poem was easily related to it.. In the beginning of the poem, it was talking a lot like his childhood because he lived nicely and had a solid family and education. Everything was beautiful, just like the city. However, over time his life had seemed to become more worn down and rough just like the city. It is really amazing how Edgar Allan Poe relates his life to a poem but at the same time makes a poetic story about it.
“And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride, In the sepulchre there by the sea, In her tomb by the sounding sea.” This is my favorite quote from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem Annabel Lee. It explains how Poe will forever be by the side of his love even after her death, and cannot ever be stopped. He, an American author, has felt the love and loss of many only to write the most emotion evoking pieces. Edgar Allan Poe is an amazing author despite losing loved ones early on, struggling with money, and even dying in a mysterious way.

In “Sonnet XVII,” the text begins by expressing the ways in which the narrator does not love, superficially. The narrator is captivated by his object of affection, and her inner beauty is of the upmost significance. The poem shows the narrator’s utter helplessness and vulnerability because it is characterized by raw emotions rather than logic. It then sculpts the image that the love created is so personal that the narrator is alone in his enchantment. Therefore, he is ultimately isolated because no one can fathom the love he is encountering. The narrator unveils his private thoughts, leaving him exposed and susceptible to ridicule and speculation. However, as the sonnet advances toward an end, it displays the true heartfelt description of love and finally shows how two people unite as one in an overwhelming intimacy.
Poems have really intricate meanings that can be portrayed in many different ways. They can be used to express feelings and emotions towards someone or something. Poems can be about love, hate, nature, or anything in particular. The poem “Annabel Lee,” by Edgar Allan Poe is a romantic poem, written during the Romanticism period. The poem is about the narrator, a young man, who is dealing with the tragic loss of his fair maiden, whom he fell in love with at a young age. The love between the couple is described as very childlike and innocent. Their love for each other is extremely passionate, for that reason, the angels became jealous and killed Annabel Lee. Although his wife passed away, the narrator does not want to give up on their love and
The explication was an opinion thought and also details about this poem. I found out that poems have a lot of meanings once you annotate it and break it down. “Annabel Lee” was an interesting poem that had brought out my attention.
