Theme of Horror in the Sleepy Hollow
The film Sleepy Hollow is a fantasy/gothic horror film; the rating 15
tells us it probably has some gore in it. As we watch the film, some
parts could also be described as thriller. The director Tim Burton is
known for his love of Hammer horror films and before starting work on
this film he encouraged his team to watch Hammer horror films like
"Black Sunday" and "The Fearless Vampire Killers", as this was the
effect he wanted to put across in Sleepy Hollow. The film focuses on
images or darkness, conflict, references to torture, isolation,
ghosts, violence and a sense of questioning.
As far as main characters go, Burton chose an all-star cast of actors
of whom he thought were suitable for the parts in Sleepy Hollow.
Burton chose Johnny Depp to play lead character, Ichabod Crane. Depp
plays a bit of over top acting, which is the usual style of Hammer
horror films. Crane is squeamish and uptight; he also has some romance
in this story, but is not a typical romantic lead character.
Actress Christina Ricci plays the daughter of the richest man in
Sleepy Hollow. Katrina Van Tassel is very innocent and fond of love
stories, which is why she immediately falls for Ichabod on his
arrival. Katrina seeks something more than just Sleepy Hollow though.
Competing with Ichabod for Katrina's heart, Casper Van Dien plays Brom
Van Brunt.
Lady Van Tassel, Katrina's stepmother and matriarch of the Van Tassel
estate, was chosen to be Miranda Richardson. As her husband, Baltus
Van Tassel sees one of England's most admired actors, Michael Gambon
playing the richest man in Sleepy Hollow.
A cameo role a...

blood and gore, which the viewer expects from a film in the genre.
What makes "Sleepy Hollow" different is Burton's use of the monochrome
of colour and the new element this adds to this horror. Also, his use
of things like the church and bible are made to have a horror effect
about them.
Elfman's use of music, especially by the two choirs bought in created
the haunting sounds very well. All the music used was done so in a
significant and effective way. The lighting in a film like this is a
very important signifier and the way it was used helped convey the
atmosphere of the scene's we were watching.
What is great is that Burton took something unreal and made it real.
All in all, every element of the film made it enjoyable for a range of
viewers.
Overall, the score was beautiful and appropriate, adding suspense and mystery at all the right times. The sound effects added psychological flavor to the story without drawing too much attention to it.

"Once upon a time" is the predictable beginning of a fairy tale and "happily ever after" is the ending. "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving is a classical myth that defies the conventional standards of a fairy tale. Set in a valley in New England, It's a gothic tale of mystery and suspense that bears no definite ending surrounding the myth of the "Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow" (Heath 1355). The original text created by Irving was intended for the mature reader, a reader who could understand a sense of irony, had knowledge of history, and taste. What of and how has "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" remained successful with audiences through a period of over one hundred and seventy years? The changes implemented in the text vary by editor from none to several, to create a family movie few changes were taken by Disney, but to create a mainstream movie the changes made by Director Tim Burton are many.
Fear brings forth a certain atmosphere which compels us to act upon it. The era in which the book was published allows us to see how common these fears were. Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House is an excellent portrayal of how fear controls the human mind by using the characters as examples. In the book Eleanor, Theodora, Luke, and Dr. Montague have all been influenced by fear in the story, whether it be the fear of love, the unknown, family, rejection, expression, or loneliness. These different types of fear plagued their minds causing their actions to reflect upon them. Jackson explores the theme of fear in The Haunting of Hill House by creating a cast of characters that in turn are manipulated by the inner workings of their minds and the
Rylee O’Brien Ms. Daniel Language Arts 5-6 10 December 2017 Recapturing The Past A woman named Lauren Oliver once said, “Take it from me: If you hear the past speaking to you, feel it tugging up your back and running its fingers up your spine, the best thing to do-the only thing-is run.” When reading the story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, this quote is very relevant to the people of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane lives in a the small town of Sleepy Hollow, he falls in love with Katrina Van Tassel.
On a stormy night, Mr. Van Garrett is making his way through the fields in a horse drawn carriage, with a mysterious figure on horseback not far behind him. With the sound of a “swoosh” by a sword, his horseman’s head comes off, forcing Van Garrett to abandon the carriage. As he makes his way through the cornfields, he too meets his fate as the same figure slices his head clean off of his body.
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving is a tale that has many different interpretations. One interpretation, in particular, is that of the supernatural and the headless horseman. The history of the town is peculiar, there is also a history of ghosts and mischief going on in the woods. This story mainly focuses on Ichabod Crane and what really happens to him at the end of the story when he is gone suddenly one night. Through the history and setting, chaos is ensured through people leaving suddenly, which gives Sleepy Hollow a haunted essence. Irving uses the character, Ichabod Crane, to show how the supernatural and history of the town are involved with Ichabod leaving town.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a short film about a particular town that is very sleepy; in other words, the town is very “dreamy.” This film is a depiction of the social instability during the time of the Market Revolution. Basically, the film shows that the town of sleepy hollow lacks a class structure within their society and shows the selfishness of the members that are just trying to make life good for themselves.
Washington Irving’s short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” was adapted into a movie titled “Sleepy Hollow” directed by Tim Burton nearly two centuries after the original publication. When the story was adapted as a film, several extensive changes were made. A short story easily read in one sitting was turned into a nearly two-hour thriller, mystery, and horror movie by incorporating new details and modifying the original version of the story. The short story relates the failed courtship of Katrina Van Tassel by Ichabod Crane. His courtship is cut short by the classic romance antagonist-the bigger, stronger, and better looking Broom Bones. Ichabod wishes to marry Katrina because of her beauty but also because of the wealthy inheritance she will receive when her father, Baltus Van Tassel and stepmother, Lady Van Tassel die. However, the film tells the story of Ichabod Crane as an investigator who is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the recent decapitations that are occurring. These modifications alter the original story entirely, thus failing to capture the Irving’s true interpretation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The film and the original story have similarities and differences in the plot, characters, and setting.
With the help of superb editing, sound, mise en scene, and cinematography, this film cannot be topped. The fist scene of the movie creates an atmosphere that helps the viewer know that he/she will enjoy this wonderful classic. Throughout the movie there are surprises and fun that makes this a movie that people will want to watch again and again. Gene Kelly said it best when he said, "Dignity, always dignity. " That is what this movie has from beginning to end, dignity.

Although I enjoyed the main portion of the movie, there were some obvious likes and dislikes in my opinion. I believe that I learned from this movie and it helped me understand more of what the people of that time were feeling.
Firstly, I think they have revealed too many of the highlights of the film in the
There is said to be a thin line between the planning and the execution a sinister action, as the idea is what first drives the motion. This is the central theme of T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Hollow Men,” in which the men depicted find themselves on the brink of hell, suffering not from their actions, but from their conspiracy to act.
