Cowboys, Indians, gunfights, cattle, stealing, prostitutes, alcohol, deserts, plains, and horses: Where can all these be found? Only in the Wild West. The days when the West was once the newest frontier have been preserved forever due to the many novels and movies written about them. The stories from the west are full of action, packed with battles between cowboys and Indians, and adventures of tracking down pistoleros (bandits, gunman). They are also full of drama, cowboys who have fallen in love with prostitutes, finding long-lost loved ones, and the pains of growing up in hopes of being a cowboy. All of this action can be found in one Western novel, Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. One theme, however, stands out from the rest of them. The theme of growing up and maturing is a predominant theme in the book Lonesome Dove. Newt, the young stable hand, is finally maturing and is looking to his leaders, Augustus 'Gus' McCrae, Captain Woodrow F. Call, and other assorted cow hands such as Dish Bogget, Joshua Deets, and Jake Spoon for advice and tips in life. After being born to a prostitute mother, who died, Newt was raised by the Hat Creek Outfit. This outfit is like the Bad News Bears. It is a ragtag group serving no real purpose other than to steal horses from Mexican bandits and then sell them to travelers who happen to stop by the desolate town of Lonesome Dove. This is a very harsh environment for Newt to grow up in. Newt is constantly looking for a companion and friend, and at the very least someone to talk to. He talks to Deets, the only one in the company who seems to enjoy his company. Call is too shy, abrupt, and ashamed to get into long discussions with Newt. Gus certainly do...
The story by Somerville Ross, “Philippa’s Fox Hunt” was set in Ireland. A recently married couple Mr. and Mrs. Yeates were featured adapting to a new environment. The new place was characterized by new social activities that were not common in their previous residence. They had to learn new skills such as riding horses and hunting. Mr. Yeates who narrated the story described his life after marriage and how events had shaped his marriage. At the very beginning I was able to pick an element of symbolism; a newly married couple will naturally start a new life and similarly in the story the couple ventured into a new society where almost everything was new just in the same way when two people get married to each other.
... town where they attend the party and have fun and dance, and in the place where they see the dying woman they start out by having a good time and drinking with two sisters. The mood fully shifts after this as they see the mine soon after and begin the real experience that will change their view of the world.
Alistair MacLeod has a unique style of writing in the story, “The Boat”, which is composed of fairly simple words to present the reader with a smooth read. The context of the passage is witnessed in the eyes of the narrator, and it voices the dedication of his father; whom works diligently as a fisherman with his son following his footsteps. The excerpt from the story relates to the story as a whole since his father carried on the tradition of fishing at sea from previous generations - despite his appreciation for books, he gave up on his dreams for the sake of family heritage. MacLeod describes the father in the story with detail about what he was wearing “rubber-booted heel” (228), his age “sixty-five” (228), and also reveals facial features

...m the last clue, which leads them underneath a church. They go to the end of the tunnels and find and old staircase leading to a room. Ian makes Ben give him the last clue and leaves him, his dad, Riley, and Dr. Chase down there with no way to get out. Nut Ben gave him the wrong clue. Him and his dad look around the room some more and find another clue. They had to push a certain picture for the wall to open. When it opened they thought it was the treasure room but they were wrong. They went to the wall and figured out that they had to use the pipe that they found in The Charlotte. They put the pipe in the wall and twisted it. The wall opened to reveal the treasure. The FBI agent came and made a deal with Ben that he will not have to go to prison if he gives 89% to the museum. Ben got 10% and Riley got 1%. Ben and Dr. Chase got married and moved into a huge house.
At this point in the novel, Vladek and Anja escaped the bunker and they are walking down a path. The panel demonstrates the couple wandering around, without a destination. Another theme is the ability of a person to have some dignity even when it feels like the world is against you. These themes remain important today because it teaches us what can happen to a person if their dreams are never fulfilled. For example, Walter had a dream to open a liquor store, however this dream never came true after Willy (the person Walter gave the money too to open the store) betrayed him. He broke down and felt hopeless. It also teaches us that dignity is important, Walter also portrayed his need for dignity after he rejects the offer of Mr. Linder from the“home improvement
Scottie follows her to a flower shop, a church, where she continues through the sanctuary to a cemetery, finally stopping at a grave. As Madeleine exits, Scottie takes note of the headstone, which has the name “Carlotta Valdes” on it. He then follows her to an art museum, where Madeleine sits and stares at a woman in a portrait for hours. He notes the similarities of the hairstyles and the bouquets both women, Madeleine and the woman in the portrait, are holding. Scottie inquiries about the portrait in a conversation with an employee at the museum, the portrait is titled “Portrait of Carlotta”. Finally, he trails her to a hotel and observes her in a second-floor window. Scottie enters the old hotel, after spotting her, and asks the manager who the occupant of the room is. The manager is hesitant in telling him, until Scottie reveals his former police badge. The manager claims the name of the woman is Carlotta Valdes, but that she hasn’t been in all day. Scottie finds this impossible since he saw her just a minute ago in the window, so he goes up to the room, which he finds indeed empty. He goes over to the window, to see that her car is gone from the
