In The Pearl, I learned many lessons that will be able to help me throughout my life.. The theme of this book is that no matter how or rich you are, you should always have respect for others and most important yourself.
Money is great and all, but it does change people if they let it get to them. Yes it changes people because once that person has money, they think they deserve everything in the world, but that's only if they let money take over them. Some people don’t let the money take over them because they may cause problems on how their attitudes changed. I know some people might think that money's just paper, but it's the power of evil. In The Pearl, when Kino found the pearl, his family was happy for once but what he didn’t understand

Losing wealth is a good thing because maybe it'll show the people how good you are without power. Power is a very strong thing because it can cause many good things, yet many bad things. When people are gaining power they can either let power take over them or they can maintain by keeping it to themselves. People might think that power is good and all but what they don't realize is that power can ruin their reputation with everyone they know. Gaining wealth is great and all but it kind of isn't because when you gain wealth you gain more and more power. In The Pearl, the doctor had so much money and power that he thought he was better than everyone else. He didn't care if his son, Coyotito, was sick, the only reason why the doctor wouldn't treat the baby is because the family didn't have any money. Once Kino found the pearl, everyone wanted his attention, especially the doctor. When Kino found the pearl he changed his attitude with everyone, because he thought that he was better than everyone else. He actually let the power and popularity take over his mind, he never opened his eyes and realized what he actually …show more content…
When Kino found the pearl, he thought this would make him popular...it did but he didn’t realize the consequences he could cause. What he didn’t realize is that everyone wanted that pearl, he thought that he would have power which he did. By the end of the week the whole town wanted Kino for being disrespectful. Juana was a great wife, but she tried to warn Kino about the pearl, because she knew that the pearl could bring great danger to her family. Kino never realized that he beat his wife because she tried to throw the pearl back into the ocean, so the danger could go away. The town changed when they found out that Kino found the pearl, they went from worn out to happy. When they realized that Kino turned into a big jerk, half the town started to hate him and his family. Some guys were supposedly Kino’s friends, they drank with him until he was drunk, and then they asked and asked where he hid the pearl. Once Kino found out that those two guys tried to steal the pearl, that possibly ruined his whole entire reputation in that town. Jealousy isn’t always a good thing, the town was jealous that Kino was the one to find that pearl. Everyone wanted it but I guess Kino was lucky enough to find it. Always enjoy your life and never let the stupid little things ruin your reputation with
In John Steinbeck’s, The Pearl, the village of La Paz is alive with greed. Everyone wants something from the main character, Kino. The doctor wants money for treating Kino's baby. The priest wanted money to fix the church. The townspeople also wanted money. The village is over come by evil from this one man's good fortune. Why is that money and power can changes an individual’s personality? Well, when some humans see something desirable and valuable that doesn’t belong to them, they will go to a great extent to have it. Whether, that is stealing, lying or even killing loved ones. This is simply described as greed. Greed and ambition is a common theme in both Shakespeare’s tragic play, Macbeth and the movie “A Simple Plan”. They both share the concept of wanting something and committing crime after crime to achieve it. Similarly, the main characters in both stories become greedy after finding something valuable and their spouse encourages them further. Once in control, the main characters are willing to do anything to keep possession, even if it means to kill love ones.
He is one of the most greedy person in this book.Kino Was perfectly fine in the beginning of the book, but then he found the pearl and turned his life upside down.Kino had a perfect relationship with his wife, but then “he struck her in the face,he cluched her with his fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side.Kino looked down at her and his teeth were bared. He hissed at her like a snake, and Juana stared at him with wide UN frightened eyes, like a sheep before the butcher(59)”.Kino even got worse “When Juana tries to hid the pearl and Kino goes crazy and almost attacks her like a crazy man(38)”.But then there is this side of Kino when he first gets the pearl”When Kino thinks of all the things that the pearls wealth and money will do for them but not for anyone else(36)”.This is greedy because he only thinks of himself for the pearl. But Kino am greedy Most of the
Many stories in the world have a lot of the same characters. Carl Jung believed that universal, mythic characters called archetypes reside within the collective unconscious of people in the world. Archetypes are important because basically any story you will read will have archetypes in it. The archetypes in The Pearl are important because without the Hero, Ally, or Loyal Retainer archetypes in the book, The Pearl would have no story. This is why John Steinbeck uses many different archetypes in The Pearl such as the Hero, Ally, and Loyal Retainer.
He is driven by greed, so much so that he could even see dreams form in the pearl. Kino is the head of a modest household and until he finds the pearl he lives a satisfied life with all he needs for his family to be happy. As soon as Kino finds the pearl he starts to want possessions he never wanted before. He dreams of education for Coyotito, marrying Juana in a Catholic church, purchasing new clothing for his family, and getting a harpoon and a rifle for himself. “It was the rifle that broke down the barriers . . . for it is said that humans are never satisfied, that you give them one thing and they want something more” (Steinbeck 32). Located within a small poverty-stricken community, a pearl diver named Kino finds “the Pearl of the World” and becomes suddenly rich, he begins to want items that he thought were impossible before. As Kino thinks more and more of what the pearl can do for him, he starts to think that it will raise his social status as well. This is only the beginning of Kino’s greediness, for the more he gets, the more he will want, and this begins to dehumanize him. Kino focuses on the wealth of the pearl and causes him to change his values about life. In the beginning, Kino is only focused on his family, once Kino finds the pearl he becomes more focused on the pearl, rather than his family. Kino cares a lot more about losing the pearl rather than something bad happening to his loved
The Pearl and “The Treasure of Lemon Brown” both have main characters that go through a series of events that change their perspective on true values. In “The Treasure of Lemon Brown,” Greg originally thinks that basketball is most important, but his chance meeting with a homeless stranger makes him realize that his dad and his advice are most important. Kino, the main character in The Pearl, finds a great pearl and loses his values only to regain them after the death of his son. So Kino and Greg’s experience can teach people not to be greedy and that the majority of us are rich enough as it is, for true wealth isn’t money or items, it the love and strength a family
In the Westing Game money acts as a sign of power to show in the end money is the not the final goal and when money is involved we forget about how much more powerful emotional value is. People use things and want things with artificial value because we give it power. Power gives us control which we take and use it towards something with an emotional sense of value. The problem is that people naturally get caught up in the power of money and forget about things with emotional power. Causing us to forget about things with emotional value and eventually lose what people started saving for.
The difference between having money and not, is huge. As you can see in “The Great Gatsby” it really shows the differences in life between the rich and poor and even the differences between some rich people because of how they got their money. People can almost say money is everything, it can determine our happiness, and how we live, and can even determine who we are.
Kino found one of the most valuable and precious pearls in the world and being convinced of its worth was not going to be cheated by only minimally upgrading his condition of life. Instead he wanted to break the fixed life and role that he and his family had and always would live. Kino refuses the maximum offer of fifteen hundred pesos that would easily ease his and his family’s pain and suffering for the coming months. Kino is then determined to trek to the capital to find a fair and just offer. Kino continues determined through the mountains after an attempt at the pearl, his canoe destroyed and his hut set a blaze. Continuing to put his family’s life on the line. It eventually takes the death of his beloved son Coyotito to make him realize he needs to stop being so greedy, no matter how hard he tries and to shut his mouth and know his role.
Readers can tell from the statement that many of the people Kino encounters after finding the pearl become bitter “friends”. At this point, Kino and Juana begin to realize that the pearl is bringing bad luck upon them. They are taken advantage of by the doctor and he decides to visit them after knowing they have the pearl. “This pearl is like a sin”(56). Juana begins to realize the pearl is bringing them bad luck, but Kino still trusts that it’s a gift. Readers can also assume that people are trying to take the pearl when Kino is suddenly attacked during the night. “Blood oozed down from his scalp and there was a long…”(56). Readers can now confirm that the pearl has changed and now represents evil. The pearl also begins to destroy Kino and Juana’s relationship as they have different opinions on what to do with the pearl. After Kino wakes up and follows Juana when she wakes up and walks out, readers know he has started to lose full trust in her. “He rolled up to his feet and followed her silently as she had gone” (58). Through the symbolism of the pearl and what it brings upon Kino and Juana, the author emphasizes how the pearl is not what it first appears to be, which was
Novels were created to show a very naive view in great depth. The Pearl is a novel in its most complete form. Steinbeck does this by conveying life symbolically. Through symbols, John offers the reader a clearer look at life and it?s content. He shows major imagery in four ways: Kino, music, Coyotito, and the 'Pearl of the World'.
The pearl symbolizes many different things. To Kino, at first it symbolized happiness and hope. On page 39 in chapter 3, it has stated, "So lovely it was, so soft, and its own music came from it- its music of promise and delight, its guarantee of the future, of comfort and security. Its warm lucence promised a poultice against illness and a wall against insult. It closed a door on hunger." Kino sought happiness and riches, and as he was desperate he was blind to the greed that was enveloping him. All he saw was impossible hopes and dreams in the pearl. In other words, to him, the pearl guaranteed money and the comfort of a tranquil life.
In conclusion this novel has taken a poor greedy man and has put him through hell. First his son was bitten buy a scorpion and the man is determined to save his baby by finding a great pearl to sell and get money to pay the doctor to save his son. The man has murdered and decides to escape his town with his family. Some trackers, who the man bravely kills, followed the man and his family in the woods. After the battle his sick son, who was the reason he got in the whole mess with the pearl and murdering, died. Overall, The Pearl was filled with action, love, enemies, and family
A Deadly Sin Indeed: The Elements of Fiction that Convey a Theme of Greed in The Pearl
“Money is number and numbers never end if it takes money to be happy your search for happiness will never end.” (Bob Marley). For the majority of people in our modern-capitalist world, money is the first thing, and sometimes the only thing that measures success in life. Money can buy power. Money can buy fame. Money can buy time. Sometimes money can even buy a life. So money has become the first common goal for everybody. There are many different perspectives, and how people view the world, in terms of success, and money. Money is not the root of all evil, but the love of money is the root of all evil.
