Introduction
Death is a verifiable reality and assurance of life. Andrew Hudgins despite his unwavering adoration acknowledges that death of the cow when it grows weak is inevitable as he will slaughter it, stanza three “When she grows too feeble, to give us fresh cream, we’ll slit her red throat”. In the same manner John Updike laments the death of his dog which the wife adored with equal measure in stanza 4 line 4: “Nevertheless she sank and, stiffening, disappeared”. Death has distinctive implications in various belief systems and ideas. He uses violence in explaining two types of love which are honest love and love based on materialistic gains. This depicts real life situations whereby people are happy with a cow as they milk it but once it grows weak the contemplate killing it. Usage of words like slaughter in stanza 4 lines 4: “when we slaughter the hogs” makes the reader emotional and emphasize with the cow. Andrew has further made use of verbal irony in stanza 7 lines 1-3, and this helps in capturing the imagination of those reading the poem. Amidst the stanza 1, the speaker has portrayed real love for the cow, even going to an extent of using the colour red that symbolises love to show how affectionate he is. However from stanza 3, it is evident that the speaker is only using the cow without minding about its well-being. When it gets weak instead of seeking its treatment from a veterinary the only thing he thinks of is killing it for beef. In his poem, Dog 's Death, Updike reveals the sorrow and sadness that engulfs their homestead after the death of their dog that they treated with utmost admiration and compassion. The somber mood in his home is vivid in stanza 4 line 2: “And my wife called in a voice imperious with tears” as they mourn the sudden demise of their dog.
