In the novel The Road and the film The Revenant the theme of survival is shown by The Man, The Boy and Hugh Glass scavenging food and using things such as a horse carcass, blankets and fire to prevent hyperthermia. Survival is the state or fact of continuing to live or exist. This essay will argue how The Revenant and The Road both compare to the theme survival. Also in the films 28 days later and The Pianist also follow the theme survival and I will compare examples to show this theme.
In the novel The Road we can see that there is a theme of survival. The man is walking around an old orchard and stumbles across a dried apple slightly buried in the ground. An excerpt from the novel sais ‘dry and almost tasteless. But an apple. He ate it entire

Another excerpt from the book to show this is ‘ The snow fell nor did it cease to fall. He woke all night and got up and coaxed the fire to life again. He’d unfolded the tarp and propped one end of it up’. From this we understand that fire and heat is key to surviving during the nights of this cold barren world. Also The Man is focused on keeping his son warm to by him waking up all night to make sure the fire doesn’t go out. In the film The Revenant there is also a theme of survival. In this scene Hugh Glass uses a horse carcass to sleep inside of overnight to stay warm and to prevent hyperthermia considering it’s a very cold snowy place he is in. As the scene unrolls we see a close up of his face inside the horse carcass breathing out condensation. From this we see that it is very cold and essential that he uses the horse carcass for heat to survive. It also shows that Hugh Glass is smart and thinks fast as he just fell off a cliff with the horse and because the horse died he uses it to survive. In another scene we see a mid shot of Hugh Glass catching a fish in a fish trap that he made out of rocks. He then grabs it out of the water and eats
Every man, woman, and child has his or her breaking point, no matter how hard they try to hold it back. In Night by Elie Wiesel the main theme of the entire book is the human living condition. The quality of human life is overwhelming because humans have the potential to make amazing discoveries that help all humans. Elie Wiesel endures some of the most cruel living conditions known to mankind. This essay describes the themes of faith, survival, and conformity in Night by Elie Wiesel.
The structure and language used is essential in depicting the effect that the need for survival has had upon both The Man and The Boy in The Road. The novel begins in media res, meaning in the middle of things. Because the plot isn’t typically panned out, the reader is left feeling similar to the characters: weary, wondering where the end is, and what is going to happen. McCarthy ensures the language is minimalistic throughout, illustrating the bleak nature of the post-apocalyptic setting and showing the detachment that the characters have from any sort of civilisation. Vivid imagery is important in The Road, to construct a portrait in the reader's mind that is filled with hopelessness, convincing us to accept that daily survival is the only practical option. He employs effective use of indirect discourse marker, so we feel as if we are in the man’s thought. The reader is provided with such intense descriptions of the bleak landscape to offer a feeling of truly seeing the need for survival both The Man and The Boy have. The reader feels no sense of closu...
The film ‘I Am Legend’ and the novel ‘Z For Zachariah’ were chosen to be studied together for my connected text assignment. Originally I chose the film because I enjoyed it; I then matched it to a text based on similarities in theme. Both ‘I Am Legend’ and ‘Z For Zachariah’ are based on the same theme; that of man as the cause of the destruction of the human race. While the settings and characters are vastly different; as is the cause of destruction, both the main characters are faced with tough decisions that must be made in order to survive a major man made disaster. Both characters must deal with the enormity of the notion that they could be one of the last humans alive on earth.
The complexity of the plot starts when the reader is introduced to a man lost in a cave and his source of light goes out and continues when the man realizes that “starving would prove [his] ultimate fate” (1). Readers get a sense of hopelessness the man is feeling, and this is where the tensions begins to build. Alt...
The theme of this story is actually stated in the story if it is read carefully and Crane reinforces it innumerable times. The theme of the story is man’s role in nature and is related to the reader through the use of color imagery, cynicism, human brotherhood, and the terrible beauty and savagery of nature. The story presents the idea that every human faces a voyage throughout life and must transition from ignorance to comprehension of mankind’s place in the universe and among other humans.
In the Novel The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, survival becomes the biggest quest to life. The novel is set to be as a scene of isolation and banishment from people and places. The author uses the hidden woods as a set of isolation for the characters, in which creates the suspense of traveling to an unspecified destination near the shore. Cormac McCarthy creates a novel on the depth of an imaginative journey, which leads to a road of intensity and despair. The journey to move forward in an apocalyptic world transforms both of the main characters father and son tremendously as time progress. In particular, the boys’ isolation takes him from hope to torment, making him become fearful and imaginative. The images indicate that McCarthy’s post apocalyptic novel relies on images, particular verbal choices, and truthful evidence to how isolation affected the son emotionally and physically.
You can tell a lot about a story by its title. Some might say that this is judging a book by its cover, however a title is basically an overview of the entire story, summarized in less than ten words. Flannery O’Connor’s (1925-1964) story, The Life you save May be Your Own, has a gargantuan title. From this title, you can infer that the ending of this story is a life changing one. This story has a very grotesque theme. However, it takes place in a very well light area, which shows a lot of contrast to the dark theme. In this story, its starts off with a man who has had an exciting past meet with a family who has most certainly not. He seems nice, but throughout the story, the characters show their true colors. By the end, the story takes a sharp turn from blissful to outrageous. There are three reasons why the title of Flannery O’ Connor’s story, The Life You Save May be Your Own, relates so well to the text.
The theme of this book is that the human capacity to adapt to and find happiness in the most difficult circumstances. Each character in the novel shows this in their way. For instance, their family is randomly taken from their home and forced to work but they still remain a close nit family. In addition, they even manage to stick together after being separated for one of their own. These show how even in the darkest time they still manage to find a glimmer of hope and they pursued on.
I find the book A Lesson Before Dying paired with the theme heroism to be very conflicting because while there are aspects of that in the book I do not find it to be the main theme. Becoming a man does not mean that you are becoming a hero or even helping someone come to that point does not make you a hero. That makes you a decent human being and a friend. The Reverend states, “ When you act educated, I’ll call you Grant. I’ll even call you Grant, when you act like a man,” (pg.216). The Reverend even goes on telling Grant that he knows nothing about his own people. The Reverend is seen as a hero by his community and he sees them as his people, his friends, or maybe even family. This is a trait that I see a lot of “heroes” have. The people
Why Dylan Thomas and Emily Dickinson used a theme of death in their poem and what are the effects of the metaphorical expressions.
Through the use of recurring ideas of death, hope and reality, McCarthy conveys that there is no escape; either from the universal destruction caused by the apocalypse or the emotionally destructive effects of dreams. In The Road, dreams reveal the human nature of the characters. McCarthy illustrates the gradual dehumanization of people when life completely changes; he argues that all the terrible things that people could do have already been done, underlining the frailty of our existence. McCarthy ultimately shows us how reliant we are on the past and that we must let go of the past to make way for the future.
The Fear of War Roman philosopher and dramatist, Seneca the Younger, expresses “Worse than war is the fear of war” (.) Seneca the Younger describes the physical and emotional attributes that coincide with war. He further states the emotional or psychological burdens far outweigh those of the physical nature. Through the centuries long after Roman influence, this philosophy remains accurate into modern times. “The Things They Carried,” authored by a Vietnam veteran named Tim O’ Brien, expresses the notion of the mental agonies of war, specifically the Vietnam War, through the eyes of an army unit led by a young First Lieutenant named Jimmy Cross.
When this theme was first introduced, I thought I knew what being human was. I realized soon after that I only had a basic understanding, but I didn’t really know the true meaning. I felt a wave of curiosity as we read the theme title in class, truly starting to wonder what the meaning of being human was.
In conclusion the story is about a man’s struggle to make it in 75 below temp and making a fire is the only way for him to survive. London shows the theme of ruggedness by how the man seems to have no fear of a temperature of fifty below zero. The story teaches the readers that even though we may want to travel alone in the outdoors, we should always travel with some friends or stay within our limits. The man in the story is making a nine-hour trek across the frozen Yukon with only his dog in the biting cold, but after many calamities he freezes to death. He knew he was going to die if he didn’t get warm soon enough, but the cold got the best of him by freezing his arms.
The times were changing and the black man had started to change in his perception of the world around him. The abolishment of slavery was only a start on a path to equal rights. Black writers came fourth and presented arguments to their fellow men on the strength of the black man. Strength and Unity is a common theme between The White Witch, The Song of the Smoke and If We Must Die. The three poems were written by prominent black authors and the themes of strength and unity can be seen as arguments in three poems. Each poem addresses an audience of black men in order to convey it arguments for unity and strength.
