Just Lather, or Kill
Within the story “Just Lather, That’s All” the protagonist, the barber is placed into a situation in which he must act on a difficult decision. The barber was required to decide on whether to execute Captain Torres, the antagonist or complete his barber duties and let the captain go. Although the barber and Captain Torres were enemy’s the barber decided to complete his job and not end the captain 's life. If one were placed in the situation of the barber, one would have made the same dissection.
Firstly, Killing Captain Torres while performing his barber duties would have been a cowardly thing to do. “you came to me for a shave, and I perform my work honorably.” (Tellez 3). Therefore, killing the Captain while his eyes were closed

there were many alterations that occurred to Teddy within the text, however, the ruinning of his childhood, his imagination and the relationship between him and his relatives were most severe and effective for Teddy.
The Most Dangerous ??????
“The Most Dangerous Game” offers a clever play on words, with “game” carrying two different meanings. The first being the animals and humans hunted, and the second being the competition aspect between Zaroff and Rainsford. The title advocates hunting other people is the most dangerous game, and people themselves are the most dangerous prey to hunt.
Within the title the word “game” is a double entendre, meaning it can be perceived in one way or another, however, I believe it can be understood in both manners. Within the text, the word “game” is referred to in the sense of hunting prey a majority of times. “You 're a big game hunter, not a philosopher.” ( Connell14). The protagonist, Rainsford uses the word “game” in the sense of hunting within the text, meaning the word can be perceived in such a
The most dangerous game began as a sport for one man. His name is Sanger Rainsford. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.
Where does the line of sport and murder intersect in hunting? Is it when the species being hunted is able to reason? Or is it when the species being hunted looks just like the hunter? In both movie and film, we see a man fight for his life and another going against all codes of ethics. While Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s film adaptation both have several similarities, the difference are also apparent in each respective media.
Hunting big game animals for sport was a popular pastime with the wealthy classes following World War I. The morality of killing for sport was not questioned in reality, but in this short story the author does question it by taking it a step further and having the protagonist, Sangor Rainsford, hunted by the antagonist, General Zaroff. In a short story full of irony, one of the greatest ironies of Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is that General Zaroff repeatedly tells Rainsford that he maintains a sense of civilization on his island.
“Lather And Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, shows suspense in many ways, by using key elements. The key element that Tellez uses, develops suspense in the story. Tellez uses many different elements to show suspense like using mood and tone to make us feel something. In "Lather And Nothing Else” Tellez used style, the point of view, and pace to build suspense into the story.
The first indication of fear transpires as Teddy suspects his paper world would likely be interpreted as inappropriate by his uncle, creating anxiety and unease within him of being criticized. While awaiting his uncle’s reaction regarding his activities in the attic, Teddy was pondering “if his uncle saw them, or even destroyed them”, revealing Teddy’s worries of being exposed, fearing his uncle may label him as immature upon discovering it. Furthermore, Teddy is fearful of his paper world being discovered due to the fear that his enthusiasm for the world would fade if it were to be revealed, as he bears a strong obsession with it, and considers it his second world. He yearns for his uncle to disregard his paper world, as “Theodoresburg had been growing for a year, and often it seemed more real than the town …. in which he lived in.” Teddy feared his uncle would ruin his fixation with his paper world, regarding his it as an equivalent to the real world, which is indicative of Teddy’s immaturity, cherishing a world that does not exist. Teddy’s fear of his paper world being exposed to his uncle is conspicuous, as he is petrified of his uncle discovering it, symbolizing society’s expectation of

Did you know even though nature can be beautiful it can sometimes be deadly. In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford begins to see the awe-instilling power of nature and how it can hurt us. The Most Dangerous Game Written by Richard Connell is a story about the dangers of nature and the ethical question of if we should kill animals. Connell uses irony to instill a question in the mind of the reader”Is killing animals moral?” In “The Most Dangerous Game,”Richard Connell uses a flip between man and animal to convey irony in the story while also using the dangerous environment of the Island to show suspense.
In the story The Most Dangerous Game a character named General Zaroff has a passion for hunting. He has been hunting since he was born. He has hunted every animal known to man, but, then he gets tried of hunting the same animal over and over. So he discovers a new animal human flesh. General Zaroff is person of bad character because he is cruel, cowardly, and untrustworthy.
“The Most Dangerous Game,” is based off of the theories of Darwinism, big game hunting, and the Russian Civil War. In the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin developed the idea of natural selection and survival of the fittest. These ideas were the process in nature by which only the organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and pass on these genes to their succeeding generations. Those who cannot adapt to their environment will most likely be dead. Big game hunting was the belief of hunting dangerous species in South America. In South America, jaguars were a big prize if killed because jaguars were “the most powerful and more feared carnivore in South America,” (Literature and Its Times 232). The Russian Civil War was between the Bolsheviks (Reds) and their opponents (Whites). The whites were composed of a mix of Cossacks and...
In the short story “Lather And Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez, the barber made the correct choice in letting captain Torres live, because the barber would have been killed, and isn’t a murderer, and loves being a barber. The barber made the correct decision, if he had killed the Captain the barber would have been killed. So it would not have helped anything, but had gotten The barber killed. In the barber’s mind “ what good could come of that? None, of course” (Tellez, 2). Letting Captain Torres live means that the barber will stay alive as well and continue sending in information about the captain's whereabouts. If the barber had decided to kill Torres it wouldn’t have solved anything but cause even more problems for both sides, like another
In the first place, despite the creativity and imagination of Teddy, he is harshly criticized by his uncle and aunt who do not know what he is thinking in his mind. Therefore, they do not understand him thoroughly. Teddy’s dominant character trait is shown in his handiwork of the world he has created: “The streets and alleys were full of nobles, peasants and soldiers, their two dimensional bodies scissored from paper, their faces and clothing down in crayons and lead pencils”. (Nowlan 41) Indeed, Teddy is very creative. He is able to build a paper-made kingdom, in which are present people of various social cl...
If anyone should try to get into my house-or out of it-something extremely regrettable would occur to him.” These hounds of General Zaroff symbolize the hellhounds of Greek mythology. Hellhounds are said to protect the supernatural. For example, they may hunt down wandering ghosts, or even protect a supernatural treasure. The hounds in “The Most Dangerous Game” are very ferocious and are relentless, just like the hellhounds of the underworld. The hounds in the story are used for when General Zaroff can not find the prey. When they are being hunted and are almost to the point of winning the game, that is when the hounds come out and hunt down the prey. Both types of hounds hunt down the lost souls that are trying to escape, or the ones running for their lives. The sea and jungle are major forms of symbolism in the story. “This island is called Ship Trap.” General Zaroff stated. He also said, “They indicate a channel, where there’s none; giant rocks with razor edges crouch like a sea monster with wide-open jaws. They can crush a ship as easily as I crush this nut.” The sea, the dangerous-fear breeding-nerve racking-obstacle for sailors all over the world, has brought great danger and pleasure to Ship Trap
In the short story “Just Lather, That’s All”, there are ironies that occur for the barber and Captain Torres. The barber meets with Torres to give him a shave. Torres walked into the barber shop in his military uniform to show that he was part of the military. During his shave he was telling the barber about his search for rebels and the ones they have already captured. The barber was a rebel but he assumed that Torres did not know that. While shaving Torres, the barber had a series of thoughts running through his head. He was thinking about killing Torres and the outcomes of the murder. He was also thinking about not killing Torres, and being an honorable barber. It is ironic that the barber did not kill Torres because they are enemies and
If you had the chance to kill your greatest enemy, would you? Because In Lather and Nothing Else by Hernando Tellez, the barber has to answer that exact question-- on whether or not to kill a man who is responsible for the deaths on many fighting for his cause. In the end, the barber made the right decision not to kill Torres because it was not his job to kill him, but instead to shave him.
There are two different classes introduced in this short story—the hunters and the huntees. “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell is focused on the hunters and the huntees which is introduced by the main character , Rainsford in the beginning of the story. The beginning of the story starys with rainsford on anyacht talking to Whitney about animals having understanding or not. When rAinsford falls into the ocean when being startled by gunshots, he arrives at a forest that leads into a small village. At the village rainsofrd meets general and is put in a so called game where he has to not be found by the general. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” we can see through a philisophical point of view what it means to be a human and if humans are better or worse than animals. This will be examined through symbolism and plot.
