Innocence gained at birth, yet lost in seconds. The story of the lovers whose innocence was stolen away is a fierce one in The Things They Carried. Mary Ann Bell and Mark Fossie, a fairy tale come to life. Mary Ann started stealing the soldiers lives in Vietnam, Mark Fossie became uncomfortable, yet proud of her eagerness and fearless quest for knowledge. To Rat Kiley, “...Mary Ann made you think of all those girls back home, how clean and innocent they all are, how they’ll never understand any of this...” (O'Brien 113). To the men she was: dreams, youth, an escape, the future all in one pink trimmed girl. Mainly, however, to her boyfriend, Mark Fossie, she was his future, his connection life after the war. Rat Kiley describes Mark Fossie as “proud, yes, but also amazed. A different person, it seemed, and he wasn’t sure what to make of it.” (O'Brien 98). When Mary Ann changed, and ultimately vanished, it is as if the war stole every piece of Mark Fossie. Using this sophisticated complex love story enhances the sense of lost innocence.
In the beginning Mary Ann and Mark contemplated what they would look like in the future, yet as the days went by her mindset changed. She became more interested on her new surroundings and less focused on her future as his wife. It was then that Mark Fossie began to mention her going home. He had been holding on to their future for his sanity, much to Rat Kiley's dismay "man, you must be deaf. She’s already gone" (O'Brien 107). However, she refused to leave. A piece of the love story that vanished; the dreams and futures of the soldiers. They became tainted forever with terrifying images burning through their minds. “‘What happened to her, Rat said, was what happened to all of them. You come over clean and you get dirty and then afterward it’s never the same” (O'Brien 109). The things they saw; the things they lived, they couldn't retell, for no one would believe it. Mary Ann Bell and Mark Fossie represented the relationships lost due to the war, the loved ones that had forgotten or who would never understand the changes. They represented the dreams that had changed and been lost. They were the innocence and naivety turned to disparagement.
Rat Kiely continues to tell a story about how Mary Anne had an affect on everyone. One day as Mary Anne searches the unknown of Vietnam, she goes missing. Her boyfriend, Mark Fossie is desperate and stunned and decides to go look for her. Suddenly, Mary Anne would show up at base and go missing again. When Mark Fossie goes looking for his girlfriend once again, he sees her. Rat Kiley explains, “‘But the story did not end there. If you believes the greenies, Rat said, Mary Anne was still out there in the dark… Not quite, but almost. She had crossed to the other side. She was part of the land. She was wearing her culottes her pink sweater, and a necklace of human tongues. She was dangerous. She was ready for the kill’” (page 110). Here, Rat Kiely tells the readers that everyone had to adapt to the environment to survive, and Mary Anne has done just that. In the beginning of the chapter, Kiely talks about how Mary Anne portrayed the perfect girlfriend, sweet and innocent. But the quote displays the change that occurred to Mary Anne. While in Nam, Mark came up with a master plan to fly Mary Anne over to Vietnam to be with him. As men joked one evening about how easy it could be to sneak someone over Mark heard and took this as no joke. He was going to try it! He spent almost all of his money to get her over but it paid off,they were reunited. The picture of a happy couple they spent most of their time together adn for a while things seemed very normal to them.
Imagine being in an ongoing battle where friends and others are dying. All that is heard are bullets being shot, it smells like gas is near, and hearts race as the times go by. This is similar to what war is like. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, the narrator, Paul Baumer, and his friends encounter the ideals of suffering, death, pain, and despair. There is a huge change in these men; at the beginning of feel the same way about it. During the war the men experience many feelings, especially the loss of loved ones. These feelings are shown through their first experience at training camp, during the actual battles, and in the hospital. Training camp was the first actuality of what war was going to be like for the men. They thought that it would be fun, and they could take pride in defending their country. Their teacher, Kantorek, told them that they should all enroll in the war. Because of this, almost all of the men in the class enrolled. It was in training camp that they met their cruel corporal, Himelstoss.&nbs most by him. They have to lie down in the mud and practice shooting and jumping up. Also, these three men must remake Himelstoss’ bed fourteen times, until it is perfect. Himelstoss puts the young men through so much horror that they yearn for their revenge. Himelstoss is humiliated when he goes to tell on Tjaden, and Tjaden only receives an easy punishment. Training camp is as death and destruction. Training camp is just a glimpse of what war really is. The men do not gain full knowledge of war until they go to the front line. The front line is the most brutal part of the war. The front line is the place in which the battles are fought. Battles can only be described in one word- chaos. Men are running around trying to protect themselves while shooting is in the trench with an unknown man from the other side. This battle begins with shells bursting as they hit the ground and machine guns that rattle as they are being fired. In order to ensure his survival, Paul must kill the other man. First, Paul stabs the man, but he struggles for his life. He dies shortly after, and Paul discovers who he has killed. The man is Gerald Duval, a printer.&n Having to deal with killing others is one of the horrors of war. The men who are killed and the people who kill them could have been friends, if only they were on the same side. The other important battle leaves both Paul and Kropp with injuries.
In the aftermath of a comparatively minor misfortune, all parties concerned seem to be eager to direct the blame to someone or something else. It seems so easy to pin down one specific mistake that caused everything else to go wrong in an everyday situation. However, war is a vastly different story. War is ambiguous, an enormous and intangible event, and it cannot simply be blamed for the resulting deaths for which it is indirectly responsible. Tim O’Brien’s story, “In the Field,” illustrates whom the soldiers turn to with the massive burden of responsibility for a tragedy. The horrible circumstances of war transform all involved and tinge them with an absurd feeling of personal responsibility as they struggle to cope.
Mark Fossie arranges a way to get his girlfriend down to Nam and a big change happens. Fossies girlfriend, Mary Anne Bell, was straight out of high school only seventeen years old. Once she gets there Fossie is the happiest man on earth. Just watching her dance and goof around making him get a grin on her face. She starts to hang around all the men and having a good time. Mary Anne begins to act a little more like the troops by not being afraid to get dirty and become a stronger fearless woman. She goes out with them into the woods, learns how to disassemble and shoot an M16, and to feed/hunt on her own. Then she starts acting less and less like the girl Fossie met on the first day Mary Anne came to visit. In the novel O’Brien says “her body seemed foreign somehow- too stiff in places, too firm where the softness used to be. The bubbliness was gone. The nervous giggling, too. When she laughed now, which was rare, it was only when something struck her as truly funny.” (O’Brien 94-95) which is showing how much the atmosphere there has changed her. War has changed her. The hot days, dirty jobs, and around all the dangerous forest area that could hold the enemies. She is becoming distant of Fossie and a whole new different person. O’Brien also says “In the evenings, while the men played cards, she would sometimes fall into long elastic silence, her eyes fixed on the dark, her arms folded, her foot tapping out a code message against the floor.” Which also shows she had changed. More distant and almost gives off a lost feeling in her eyes. She begins to come back really late at night and sometimes not coming back at all. In the end Mark Fossie approaches her after listening to her beautiful singing and tries to figure out why she has change or why she almost seems to have no interest in him anymore. She

In the beginning of the chapter one Jimmy Cross was only twenty four year old and was the leader of his own platoon. He was still an innocent person, that all when Ted Lavender was executed in front of his eyes. Jimmy Cross had to give up his youth and start thinking like a soldier. When he burns the picture of Martha he symbolically lost his innocent. He had to give up his youth and start seeing the world in a different view. Mary Anne was introduced in one of Rat Kiley’s stories. Mark Fossie had been dating her since the sixth grade and even had plans of marriage, so one day she showed up to war. She started the war very innocent and curious. She wore a pink sweater and was very friendly (89). By the end of the war, she was a completely different person. She had turned into a “greenie” at war. Eddie had even found her with a human tongue necklace (105). One day Mary Anne disappeared. Some even say she is now a part of the land, and that she crossed to the other side (110). Mary Anne is introduced to show the audience how much war can actually change a person. The things that the men see and experience during the war can make them a completely different person. War can make people lose themselves. Mary Anne proved this. I also feel that being in a new place that you have never been, can make you realize something what you really love. This was also the case for Mary Anne. She had never experienced anything like the war, so after being a part of it, I think that she had a thrill from it. This can also relate to many people today. Often times when someone goes into college or another chapter of their life, they realize thing that they enjoy, without even knowing. Mary Anne Bell is a character who was sent to Vietnam for a purpose. It seemed as if Mary Anne was the one that would be the one who would support Mark Fossie and better yet, to get married while they were in Vietnam so that their childhood dreams would come true. The war is something and somewhere that can make a person experience 180 changes. It seems as if Mary Anne Bell’s a person who’s lost her cute personality after she was just too involved with the war that was going on. It has been said that a war can truly change a person so much that they can lose all their old characteristics or better yet, their appearance.
“And then one morning, all alone, Mary Anne walked off into the mountains and did not come back” (110). Tim O’Brien’s short story “The Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong” presents an all-American girl who has been held back by social and behavioral norms – grasping for an identity she has been deprived the ability to develop. The water of the Song Tra Bong removes Mary Anne’s former notion of being as she, “stopped for a swim” (92). With her roles being erased Mary Anne becomes obsessed with the land and mystery of Vietnam and is allowed to discover herself. Through the lenses of Mark Fossie and the men in the Alpha Company, Mary Anne becomes an animal and is completely unrecognizable by the end of the story. Mary Anne, however, states she is happy and self-aware. The men of the Alpha Company argue for virtue in that Mary Anne was “gone” (107) and that what she was becoming “was dangerous… ready for the kill” (112). They did not want to accept a woman becoming something different from what women always were. In “How Tell to a True War Story” we are told that a true war story “does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior” (65). Mary Anne did not truly become ‘dark’, because to her this is not a story about war; this is a story about a woman attempting to overcome gender roles and the inability of men to accept it.
The Roman philosopher Seneca the Younger once said “Perjor est bello timor ipse belli”, which translates to: “the dread of war is worse than war itself”. With this quote, Seneca identifies that war has both its physical and mental tolls on its participants. The psychological and emotional scars of war do much more damage to a solider than the actual physical battles. Tim O’ Brien repeats this idea many years later in his novel “The Things They Carried”, by describing how emotional burdens outweigh the physical loads that those in war must endure. What keeps them alive is the hope that they may one day return home to their loved ones. Yet, the weight of these intangible “items” such as “grief, terror, love, longing” overshadow the physical load they must endure since they are not easily cast away.
O’Brien’s unique verisimilitude writing style fills the novel with deep meaning and emotion. Analyzing the novel through a psychological lens only adds to its allure. Understanding why characters act the way they do helps bring this novel to life. The reader begins to empathize with the characters. Every day, the soldiers’ lives hang in the balance. How these soldiers react to life-threatening situations will inspire the reader. Life has an expiration date. Reading about people who are held captive by their minds and who die in the name of war, will inspire the reader to live everyday as if they are currently in the
Throughout the novel, Tim O’Brien illustrates the extreme changes that the soldiers went through. Tim O’Brien makes it apparent that although Vietnam stole the life of millions through the death, but also through the part of the person that died in the war. For Tim O’Brien, Rat Kiley, Mary Anne and Norman Bowker, Vietnam altered their being and changed what the world knew them as, into what the world could not understand.
The two classic war novels ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ by Erich Maria Remarque and ‘Catch 22’ by Joseph Heller both provide a graphic insight into the life of soldiers serving their country in the historic world wars. One distinct theme of interest found in both books, is the way in which war has physically and mentally re-shaped the characters. Remarque creates the character Paul Baümer, a young soldier who exposes anxiety and PTSD (commonly known as Shellshock) through his accounts of WW1’s German army. ‘Catch 22’ however, is written in the third person and omnisciently explores insanity and bureaucracy in an American Bombardier Squadron through its utter lack of logic. The two novels use their structure, characters, symbolism and setting to make a spectacle of the way war re-shapes the soldiers.
The three character perspectives on war are interpreted entirely differently. Tim O’Brien is illustrated as the most sensitive soldier out of the three. “His jaw was in his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one eye was shut, his other eye was a star-shaped hole.” (124). Tim’s sensitivity is revealed when he shows how bewildered he is as he stares at the lifeless Viet Cong body.
Throughout the war, O’Brien depicts him as a friend that wears his heart on his sleeve to protect his fellow platoon members. However, while in Vietnam, the platoon had been assigned two weeks on night duty where they would sleep during the daylight -if they even could- and would march all night in complete blackness. As if the Vietnam War was trying to wear them down, the soldiers become more fearful and anxious. The darkness seems to hold a threatening feel that just spooks them and activates their imagination; they imagine things of horror and enemies, and they begin to panic. For example, Rat Kiley suddenly snaps and crashes into a mental wall; he explains that “’the days aren’t so bad, but at night the pictures get to be a bitch. I start seeing my own body. Chunks of myself. My own heart, my own kidneys… I’ll be lying dead out there in the dark and nobody’ll find me except the the bugs-I can see it.”’ (223). With the thoughts of how he will die, he cannot handle the mysterious nightlife anymore. He doesn’t know what is really out there in Vietnam –in fact no one knows- and the constant anticipation for a monster to attack is too much. As his friends watch him in complete agony, they realize that Rat Kiley is “definitely not the old Rat Kiley [the friendly boy they know]. His whole personality seemed out of kilter.” (221). Rat Kiley was not acting sensibly with these visions of death circling endlessly in his mind. He had been talking fearfully about what could be waiting for them in the darkness, and even harms himself by picking at his skin.
