Theme Of Injustice In Animal Farm

Animal Farm included many events in which injustice was the main factor. The pigs got to sleep on comfortable beds whereas the animals, who worked hard and long hours everyday, slept on the floor with hay. The pigs got more to eat, while the animals who, once again, worked hard and long hours got little to no food at times. “In general, the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one class of people to give it to the other.” ‐‐Voltaire. Napoleon, which in this case is the government, continuously takes food, the money, from the animals and gives it to the pigs, the dogs and himself (the other class).

In the novel, Squealer, Napoleon’s “personal messenger” repeatedly informed the animals on the farm how their food

was rationed equally, despite it increasing or decreasing. After repeatedly hearing the same sentences out of Squealer’s mouth, the animals started to forget how life was when they were fed properly. Further on in the book, they came to realize that Napoleon is keeping the food that they harvest and giving it to the incompetent pigs and dogs instead of feeding them. “The winter was as cold as the last one had been, and food was even shorter. Once again all rations were reduced, except those of the pigs and dogs” (Orwell, 112). The higher class indulged on apples and milk and kept them from the animals on the farm their “...sole object in taking these things is to preserve our health. Milk and apples (this has been proved by Science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig...The whole management and organisation of this farm depend on us” (35-36). Although all of this is true, any animal on the farm needs to eat apples and drink milk since they, too, need to get the substances to preserve their lives so that they can work harder and harder everyday. The pigs kept the food from the hard working animals only because they were scared of their health being affected in harmful ways.
