Recommended: How does conflict affect decision making
Professional speaker and founder of Lexipol, Gordon Graham once said, “Decision is a sharp knife that cuts clean and straight; indecision, a dull one that hacks and tears and leaves ragged edges behind it.” Some indecisive people would say that their inability to make a decision is what prevents them from making the wrong decision. However, not making a decision can be more destructive than making the wrong decision. The Selection is an enthralling love-story that teaches a valuable life lesson even for today’s teenager: indecisiveness can have negative effects on yourself and others. In The Selection, the author uses conflict to teach indecisiveness can have negative effects on yourself and others. For example, the author shows the main …show more content…
For example, in The Selection, America and Maxon were meant to just be friends. America wanted to stay in the Selection solely for the compensation her family was getting; Maxon was fully aware of America’s intentions. America told Maxon that she could never see herself falling in love with him but then shows affection towards Maxon even though she is still in love with Aspen. America is confused by what she feels for both of these boys. Teenagers are often indecisive in ways such as these. Their feelings change within minutes, this makes it hard to make up your mind about people. I’ve always been quite an indecisive person. Having to be in America’s shoes would perplex me just as much, as it would for anyone my age. Furthermore, the thing I am most indecisive about is food; I never want to choose what to eat. Similar to the situation America is in, not being able to make a decision wastes time. If could make up my mind about what I want to eat, everyone would get to eat. If America could make up her mind about who she wants to be with, the other person could start moving on instead of wasting their time. Without a doubt, all teens can learn from the author’s valuable lesson that indecisiveness can have negative results for yourself and
Explain how the conflict arises and go on to discuss in detail how the writer uses it to explore an important theme.

The purpose of this paper is to explore conflict and ways to manage it. I chose to explore this topic in depth because conflict touches all of our lives. Whether it is at work or in our personal lives. Like most people when you have a bad day at work; I have a tendency to bring the frustration home. Frustration at work causes me to be in a bad mood; hence that makes me argue with my spouse.
Keep in mind that conflict can be a good thing by providing a time of reflection for what is truly the best decision. If using professional communication techniques, a compromise can be made.
A psychological term used to describe mental conflict that occurs when beliefs or assumptions are contradicted by new information; arouses unease or tension; relieved by one of several defensive maneuvers: rejecting, explaining away, or avoiding new information; persuading self that no conflict really exists; reconciling differences; or resorting to any other defensive means of preserving stability or order in conception of world and of self; first introduced in 1950s; has become major point of discussion and research in psychology (as cited in Compton’s Interactive Encyclopedia, 1996).
People sometimes make careless and uninformed decisions. Most times, people feel rushed into making decisions without thinking it through completely. I feel the main issue is that they don’t define their problem or identify what they are trying to decide. People may also forget to look at all their choices when deciding. Not going through the decision making process, people can make careless and uninformed choices.

The Paradox of Choice has multiple points that can be considered the big take aways. First, choosing is not an easy procedure in daily life. The consumer must learn to be careful and choose strategically. Second, when making decisions, one cannot expect to get maximum results. Sometimes settling for less is necessary. Finally, the decision maker must account for loss, and be prepared to experience negative results from some decisions.
Before understanding how to deal with conflict, one must understand what conflict is. Conflict can be defined as, “any situation in which incompatible goals, cognitions, or emotions within or between individuals or groups lead to opposition or antagonistic interaction” (Learning Team Toolkit, 2004, pp 242-243). Does the idea of conflict always have to carry a negative connotation? The growth and development of society would be a great deal slower if people never challenged each other’s ideas. The Learning Team Toolkit discusses three different views of conflict: traditiona...
People face conflicts every day of their lives. We all come across at least one incident in our lives that is challenging and we are baffled on what decision is to be made. Such conflicts may be an inner-conflict, a conflict between oneself and nature, a conflict between oneself and another person, oneself and God, or one and society. This paper will describe an incident in my life involving a conflict.
We each possess unique ideas, opinions, beliefs, and feelings about specific situations in life. This uniqueness is a large part of what makes us human. Because we all have our own individual way of looking at things, we each have a different viewpoint on what is proper or improper. With all that variation in society conflict is inevitable! Conflict is antagonistic in nature and we all must find ways to work through conflict issues both at work and at home. This paper describes different types of conflict, the influences I personally had in learning to deal with those conflicts, some of the conflicts that I commonly experience, how I go about dealing with those conflicts, and how conflict affects me on a personal level.
We make choices every hour, every minute, and every second of our lives; whether big or small our choices are slowly putting us in the direction we choose or end up. Many of us do not realize what contributes to the choices we make and why it affects others the same way if affects us and because of this many authors and writers have written stories and articles about coming to terms with making a choice and how to better ourselves when it comes to decision-making for the future.
