Manga and the Intended Audience: An Analysis of the Gender Diversity in Boy Princess and Wandering Son
This literary analysis will analyze the theme of gender diversity in the characterization of individuals that have to adapt to stereotypical heterosexual orientations in Boy Princess by Seyoung Kim and Wandering Son by Shimura Takako. In Boy Princess, a young prince must pretend to be a princess (after the real princes has eloped) in order to fulfill a marriage commitment by his father, the king. Kim’s (2006) text defines the intension of influencing the audience into accepting gender diversity in the various roles that the prince plays when he pretends to be a girl. In this story, a young prince has been forced to dress up like a princess to fulfill a martial promise that broken by his sister, the princess. In this embarrassing situation, the prince must learn to accept his duty and follow his father’s commands. The plot describes the initial struggle of the prince to behave like a girl, which is confusing for him. However, Kim (2006) chooses to present an important scene in which a bully threatens him (thinking he is a girl) with a sword, yet he effectively thwarts the individual with a large stick: “Shut up—make a sound and you all get slain.” After this threat, the boy princess gets up and grabs a large branch and smacks that bully across the face with it. After the boy princes has humbled the bully, he expresses the idea of gender diversity in this masculine act: “I’ve had training in sword fighting, too” (Kim 9). In this scene, Kim (2006) is presenting the physical presentation of a “girl”, yet the act of sword fighting also emasculates the boy princess at the same time. In Boy princess, the young prince must learn to adapt to appearing as a girl, yet he expresses gender diversity by accomplishing feats, such as sword fighting, that defy the stereotypical limitations that are imposed on girls in terms of masculine behavior. More so, the boy princess is able to accept and endure his role as a “princess”, which shows Kim’s (2006) intention of informing the audience of the validity of gender diversity. In Wandering Son, Shuichi’s desire to become a girl is counted by Yoshiko’s desire to be a boy, which allows them to nurture and support each other’s gender choices. Shimura (2002) informs the reader that Shuichi and Yoshiko are examples of gender diversity, which should be tolerated in opposition to teenage heterosexual stereotypes of male and female behaviors. Quenzer is a mother and also a blogger for The Everyday Mom Life. On August 2016, she posted an article called “Be The Princess If That’s What You Want to Be.” She argues that parents should not steer their children away from what feels normal to them. She explains that most people associate princesses and pink with girl activities and applaud those who love blue and orange. The girls who love princesses and pink should not be ignored. She states, “If I don’t believe she can [be kind, generous, and polite] while being a princess and liking the color pink, then I am part of the problem. If I don’t believe that she can enjoy things that are still traditionally stereotyped as girl things and still be strong, brave, and fearless, then what am I teaching her” (Quenzer). Quenzer claims that she should not depict what her daughter can be, but she wants her daughter to find her own passion. Quenzer adds to Liechty’s argument because she adds that even though the princess culture can teach a child values, it can also allow children to discover who they are. Quenzer also furthers Bartyzel’s claim because she argues that parents should not narrow what it means to be feminine. “Boys will be boys, and girls will be girls”: few of our cultural mythologies seem as natural as this one. But in this exploration of the gender signals that traditionally tell what a “boy” or “girl” is supposed to look and act like, Aaron Devor shows how these signals are not “natural” at all but instead are cultural constructs. While the classic cues of masculinity—aggressive posture, self-confidence, a tough appearance—and the traditional signs of femininity—gentleness, passivity, strong nurturing instincts—are often considered “normal,” Devor explains that they are by no means biological or psychological necessities. In the story, “Boys and Girls”, the narrator is not the only one coming to terms with their identity.
In order to better understand the conflict, first we must define what conformity and self image are in the story “Boys and Girls”. Conformity is action in accordance with prevailing social standards, attitudes, and practices. In the time frame of the story, as well as through much of history, it was the social norm for women to be housemaids, and to rarely venture outside of the house to perform “man’s work”. The narrator however, has a different idea as to about how she wishes to live her life. She does not enjoy “work done in the kitchen” as she finds it tedious and “endless”. She does view the work of her father though as “ritualistically important” and far more interesting. This tomboy state of mind of the girl is part of her self image, defined as the idea, conception, or mental image one has of oneself. The topic of homosexuality has always been one approached with caution due to its taboo nature derived from its deviation from the heterosexual norm. Traditionally, and across several cultures, homosexuality has been successfully discussed through normalizing the behaviour through heterosexual representation. Gender reversal or amplification of feminine qualities of male characters have often been means by which authors are able to subtly introduce the foreign idea of homosexuality and equate it to its more formal and accepted counterpart, heterosexuality. The works of Shakespeare and Li Yu have assisted in exposing homosexual relationships while still maintaining them under the heterosexual norm, whether it be through direct or metaphorical representations.
In multiple instances throughout the film, female characters violate gender norms by acting as both warriors and leaders because they are adapting typically masculine traits. In the film, women are the majority of the labor force at iron town. The men are merely there to do the labor that needs the most physical power. “Americans oversimplify Japanese women as demure, submissive, and oppressed” (Kyu Hyun, 2002, 38). In Alice Munro’s short story “Boys and Girls,” our narrator is a young farm girl on the verge of puberty who is learning what it means to be a “girl.” The story shows the differing gender roles of boys and girls – specifically that women are the weaker, more emotional sex – by showing how the adults of the story expect the children to grow into their respective roles as a girl and a boy, and how the children grow up and ultimately begin to fulfill these roles, making the transition from being “children” to being “young adults.”

Girls, on the other hand, are brought up to define their identities through connection, cooperation, self-sacrifice, domesticity, and community in an indoor world of love and caring. This view of different male and female roles can be seen throughout children’s literature. Treasure Island and The Secret Garden are two novels that are an excellent portrayal of the narrative pattern of “boy and girl” books.
