The theme of Gary paulsens is sometimes in life nothing is easy. Brian had nothing to eat and he was strugiling to find food all he wanted was the survival pack that has many things in it.He had no way to get into the sunkin plane for example he says”a candy bar even that just a candy bar it would be worth it.” He was trying to get the water proof survival pack but he couldint get into the plane because it was deeper than six feet. Inorder to get into the plane brian used the hatchet to barge in an opening the survival pack was right next to him but he was struggling to get the water proof survival pack and he managed to get it he had many things he could use to survive in the wild. Therefor nothing is easy.
Brian quickly made a fire using small pieces of bark that caught fire really fast. He now had warmth and a shelter, the only he needed was a steady food supply.
Many people thought that Chris had no idea what he was doing and that he was very unprepared. In an article, written by Peter Christian, an Alaska Park Ranger, he talks about how Chris was unprepared for his trip: “First off, he spent very little time learning how to actually live in the wild. He arrived at the Stampede Trail without even a map of the area. If he had a good map he could have walked out of his predicament using one of several routes that could have been successful. …A bag of rice and a sleeping bag do not constitute adequate gear and provisions for a long stay in the wilderness.” Christian believed that Chris was very unprepared and if he would have had a map, he could have made it out of the wild alive. No one really knows if Chris could have, indeed, made it out using the map. But it could have helped him find one of three cabins located within a few miles of the bus. Christian also points out that a bag o...
Aron and Chris each prepared for their journeys in many different ways. Chris only brought with him the clothes on his back, a book for identifying plants, a sack of rice, some water, and a gun. For a trip that was going to be much longer then average Chris did not plan out his journey in Alaska wisely. He also unwisely refused to accept advice from locals regarding what he would need to be prepared for Alaskan wilderness. Walt McCandless said "Chris was good at almost everything he ever tried... which made him supremely overconfident". (Krakauer 118) Aron Ralston on the other hand was quite well acquainted with the rugged regions of Utah where his journey took place. Ralston took the ordinary day to day things he thought he would need for a day trip; a gallon sized CamelBak, another gallon of water in a canteen, a muffin, two burritos, and five chocolate bars. In some other ways Ralston was well prepared by bringing along climbing gear, a head lamp, a camera, batteries, and a Lea...
Pauli Murray was a double minority. She was plagued by being visibly black and a woman. These are labels that held her back and caused her great discrimination and pain throughout her life. Pauli Murray labeled the disfavor she faced because of her skin color and sex “Jim Crow” and “Jane Crow”, respectively. She used these terms to help pinpoint and vanquish the problems that people facing such discrimination encountered in society. I will identify the ways “Jim Crow” and “Jane Crow” both had a hand in discriminating against people like Pauli Murray, and the many key differences in the ways they affected lives and were indoctrinated in society.
Novelist Tim Winton has written a collection of short stories in a book called The Turning. We have picked out three out of the novel and they are, Big world, Damaged Goods and Small Mercies. Throughout all the stories there are certain themes that correspond across all three stories. Some of these themes include Change (“turning”), relationships and self-reflection. These are a good choice of themes because they can relate to a broad audience because at some point in life there will be a moment that everyone will need to make a choice about where they want their life to go. This theme can also connect with back into the other two because relationships and self-reflection can lead to big change.
Brian’s trip is very unexpectedly interrupted, when the plane’s pilot has a heart attack. Brian tries to continue the flight, with help from men over the radio. Unfortunately, the radio dies, and the plane runs out of gas. I think this part of the story, is very unrealistic. If the plane were supposed to make it all the way to the destination, why would it suddenly run out of gas? Also, why would the radios suddenly become broken? I realize this was the whole point of the novel but it doesn’t seem realistic. Brian then spends exactly Fifty-four days by an L-shaped lake. He faces many conflicts. He is put in a situation like the “Survivor” television show. He needs to find a way to survive, unlike on the show, by himself. He needed protection from the weather, so he built shelter. He was hungry, so he hunted for food. He discovered how to catch fish, rabbit, and discovered bushes of nuts. He also had a bad encounter with “Poison berries,” as he called them, which made his stomach sick. Brian also had encounters with wild animals, such as, a porcupine, and a moose. Brian needed warmth, so he made fire, without any matches.
Plot Summary: This flight to see his father in the Canadian wilderness is Brains first time in an airplane. He explains this to the pilot and tells him that he is scared. The pilot feels sorry for Brian and decides to show him that flying is not very difficult. He lets Brian take the steering control and direct the line of flight for a while. Just when Brian thinks that everything is going well, the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian knows he must land the plane himself or die. He tries to use the radio without success. He knows that if he hits the trees, he can die, so he decides to land in the water of a lake. When the plane is in the water, he gets out through a window. He lay on the bank of the lake for a while to rest. Brian knew he needed food and shelter to survive so he set out to find both. He was very careful not to get lost or go too far from the lake where his water was. He found a cherry tree and because he was very hungry, he ate his fill. He filled his windbreaker with cherries to eat later and then managed to find a cave for shelter. He slept very well, but in the morning when he awoke, he saw a bear in the cave. He was terrified, because the bear was only about 20 feet away eating his cherries out of his windbreaker. The bear only looked at Brian and then left. The cherries must have been enough to curb his appetite! The discovery of how to make a fire was very important to Brains survival. He needed to have one at the mouth of the cave to protect him from wild animals, and to signal for help.
The Illegal, and Some Great Thing by Lawrence Hill both contain several important themes. To explain, The Illegal features the main character’s loss of innocence, and the racism towards people because of their country of origin, and ethnic background. Next, Some Great Thing includes the themes of racism and prejudice towards not only the protagonist, but also to French Canadians because of the colour of their skin, or the language they speak, and the courage of characters to stand up for what they believe is right.
Plot: Brian decides after a year of living in normal civilization that city life isn't for him. He got in a fight in a dinner and he realizes that he wasn't fighting for the same reasons the other guy was fighting for that Brian felt he was fighting for life or death like he would be in the wild. The cops took Brian down to the station and that is the reason why he had to get scheduled therapy sessions with Caleb. At first Brian isn't sure what to think of the meetings with Caleb and then he warms up to him and starts telling him everything. Every day when Brian goes to Caleb's he has tea and he grew accustomed to it and adds it to his list to bring to the wilderness. Brian notices that even though Caleb was blind he still felt and notices things in a different way and was more understanding. Brian likes this because he could tell him all about the wilderness and Caleb would listen to all of the details very carefully. Brian is very meticulous when he came up with the items he
Christopher Johnson McCandless is a prime example of not being able to handle the challenges on the road. Introduced in chapter one as Alex, he is picked up by a truck driver and is described to have barely anything to help him on his journey. On chapter one, page five the statement, “ Still, Gallien was concerned. Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten-pound bag of rice. His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior,”(5) Gallien notices that Alex doesn’t even have the bare essential to even keep up with the harsh conditions he will face alone. Having the right gear and supplies for the road is a need. Without it you might as well consider yourself dead or quit while you are ahead. Another example of him not being prepared is his hunting weapon. “His rifle was only .22 caliber, a bore too small to rely on if he expected to kill large animals like moose and caribou, which he would have to...
All through the story Brian uses his hatchet to make many other tools. Such as a bow and arrows, fishing trap and other tools. With the tools he made with his hatchet he can survive natures elements and find food. This symbolizes how self effient Brian is, and he can take care of himself without others. Brian might have gotten this skill from his parents being divorced, for he never had anyone in his life that he could trust or depend on.
In 1925, Floyd Collins became a household name. People all over America were fascinated, horrified, and deeply moved by his dire plight. This extremely emotional response was naturally even stronger among the Cave City locals. Many of them were inspired to rush to Sand Cave and help in the best way they knew how to. As a result, for too long Collins was left to the zealous, unqualified, and amateurish attempts of the locals, who, because of their stubborn pride, did everything they could to expel the outsiders. Unfortunately, these outsiders were the only ones with the professional skill, rationality, and organization that Collins' predicament demanded. While the outsiders could have saved Floyd Collins, the locals prevented his rescue.
...light arose, my eyes began to squint shut trying to block the sunlight drifting in. I failed and immediately woke up opening my red watery burning eyes. David ran through the rough edged sedimentary grey rocks and through the bright green leaves of the trees with an idea. “To get rescued we should make a large SOS sign with rocks so that the planes flying from above can see it” he said. I thought the idea was incredible, so we all came together placing rock after rock deeply in the wet sparkly sludge like sand. After a long hardworking 12 hours we were finally finished. As we waited anxiously day after day for rescue we finally received it. Fifteen days later a enormous smooth plane landed on the island. As the plane slowly lifted off the almond colored ground making a turbo noise, I felt that we all learned in any situation that we need to stick together to survive.
At the beginning of the story Brian has been helpless and lonely.First of all he has no friends. He has no friends because he never opened up and tried to talk to anyone.Later in the story he turns into a bird and no one saw that he was gone he may not even have any family. If you ask me why did his family not even see he was gone. This proves that brian is a helpless character
With no experience with flying and no rules he had learned so he was screaming in the cockpit thinking about his will. Then he remembers that planes always have controls. He took hold of the joy stick and pulled up. He still ploughed through the ground, but at least it didn’t explode. He got out and waved the dust away from his face. He trudged out of the forest and made way to the nearest city. When he arrived at Krasnoyarsk Krai it was nearly empty it was only 3:00 in human time so he was pretty early. He just realized how tired he was so he made a bed of tall grass in the meadows and he instantly closed his eyes and went to
