Katherine Paterson’s Bridge to Terabithia explores relationships between family, friends and strangers. Bridge to Terabithia shows the importance of friendship and the powerful effect it can have on peoples lives. As Jesse and Leslie build the magical land of terabithia their friendship also grows. Beginning as loners, their friendship provides them both with happiness and security, a place where they can be the best version of themselves. Jesse slowly realises that his friendship with May Belle is still important, they become more than just brother and sister, they become friends as well. The unlikely friendship of Leslie and Janice Avery, the school bully, grows as Janice feels betrayed by her best friends.

Jesse and Leslie show us the importance of friendship through out the novel. When Leslie first goes to Lark creek elementary she meets Jesse, her new neighbour, and friend. During her first day Leslie proves that she doesn’t act like the typical girl at lark creek, instead of playing with the girls and gossiping abut boys she joins the boys in their running competition. Leslie’s personality grows on Jesse so he helps her fit into the school and her new house. Another example is when Leslie says to Jesse,“Thanks to you, I think I now have one and one-half friends at Lark Creek School.” …show more content…

An example of this is when Jesse helps May Belle over the other side of the bridge that Jesse had built. He comforts her through the terrifying moment of getting across the traitorous river. Another example is when he and May Belle go over the wooden bridge, Jesse tells her that everyone was so excited because “There’s a rumour going around that the beautiful girl arriving today might be the queen they’ve been waiting for.” This shows that Jesse does care about his sister and that you can be more than just
