One main theme in Enchantress from the Stars is risk and sacrifice. It's funny with risk and sacrifice, because no one ever thinks about this until the time comes. They never know until something terrible happens or when it is too late. There are many events in this book that shows this theme. But one part of the book that I thought that was the best for the theme is about a girl named Llura(the girl that went on the spaceship to the planet with Elana's father, Evrek, and stowaway Elana). Llura sacrifices herself to the Imperials so that their mission wouldn't be jeopardized and they wouldn’t be discovered. Llura knew how critical it would be if the Imperials finding out there is more advanced civilizations than themselves. I like how Jarel(the
As probably the best courtroom dramas of the twentieth century, Inherit the Wind is based on the famous, Scopes Monkey Trial. The play was printed virtually thirty years afterward and takes original authority in varying the true-life elements of the court case. The central conflict of the play is based on the Scopes Monkey Trial itself. Several themes are presented throughout the play, for example when Brady argues for religious values while Drummond argues for natural values and freedom of thought. The definition of a theme is an implicit or recurrent idea. We also see a theme of man versus society, furthermore, Bertram Cates versus the small town of Hillsboro. A third theme is appearance versus reality, or the difference between outward pretext and the basic truth. There are also quite a few symbols all the way through the play. A symbol is something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible. A symbol can also be an image that has multiple interpretations. For instance in Inherit the Wind, the small town mentality concept is greatly represented. The widespread significance of the court case is symbolized by the radio broadcast during the trial. External beauty is also significant when it is symbolized by the means of the rocking horse we learn about from Drummond's childhood. During the decade of the Scopes Monkey Trial, the conflict of evolution and the bible has massive relevance to the municipal and philosophical surroundings.
... her family with such courage are actions that demands respect from those that know of her and her sufferings. However, I do not find that Lyddie fully understands what selflessness is, a misunderstanding which makes her decisions that surround her family and her safety extremely difficult to make. Selflessness is a quality nearly synonymous to bravery. To devote oneself to a cause with absolutely no regard to his own mental and physical safety is at times a blind decision, but also almost always indicates a specific type of courage. On the other hand, it may only emphasize how the glamorization of selflessness is capable of making one so very blind to the true form of unselfishness’s consequences—a lesson young Lyddie must learn if she desires to use her selflessness wisely throughout her life. Occasionally, one must be selfish in order to achieve selflessness.
In classic literature, sexual influences depict a valuable and symbolic significance to the plot and theme of specific novels. In A Thousand Splendid Suns, Khaled Hosseini uses sex as a controlling act that dehumanizes and condemns his characters into the stereotypical role portrayed by women. Mariam and Laila--Hosseini’s main protagonists--both experienced frequent sexual trauma, among other methods of abuse, that molded them into victims of their environment and culture. Their culture--including the setting of the novel and the circumstances in which their culture functioned traditionally--provided this trauma to them through men, or a particular man, who felt that violence and sexual distress towards Mariam and Laila would help control
If Hester Prynne were not a woman, do you think she would have received the same punishment? The following story is told from a two-hundred-year-old story, taken from a hundred-year-old manuscript. Additionally, the story took place in the seventeenth century, in the new colony known as Boston, Massachusetts. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story of humanity’s unending struggle with sin, guilt, and pride. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne uses the symbols of light and dark to depict good and evil among the characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth.
love in them. But they are not all the same theme of love for example
Every day wasted living a routine-like lifestyle is another day down the drain, another day without adventure. The majority of all Legend of Zelda games begin with Link who had just awakened from a deep slumber and is laying in his bed. Link then proceeds to exit his comfy home and explore the kingdom that lay ahead.
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is the story of Jake Barnes, a World War I veteran, and his adventures with his friends and the love of his life, Lady Brett Ashley, as they travel on a vacation from France to Spain. On the night of July fifth, the evening prior to when the passage take place, Jake cannot fall asleep, and is mulling over the lost romantic relationship between himself and Brett, whom he had met during the war, and also the bitterness that erupts from Mike, Brett 's fiancee, when he is drunk; this bitterness is especially directed towards Cohn, Jake 's friend and Brett 's previous affair, which gives Jake mixed feelings on the bitterness and its truth overall. The insanity and celerity of the fiesta that takes place after
Queen Elizabeth I uses pathos to appeal to soldiers through their emotions by reminding them that she is on the field with them to die for her subjects (them), just as she is asking them to die for her. She is not on the battlefield with them for her own amusement; the Queen is determined to “live or die amongst you all, to lay down for my God, and for my kingdom” and this appeals to the soldiers’ sense of duty.
There are various themes in Ransom Riggs novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. However the theme that stuck out the most to me, was the idea of being "different". Throughout the novel, Jacob meets all sorts of peculiar people such as girls that can control plants and invisible boys. It was because of their peculiar talents that the children were outcasts and hunted by others. It was because they were different. But what does that mean? What does it mean to different? Is it because you don't fit a certain stereotype? Is it because you don't fit into a certain category? In today's society people have set an idea, a certain image of what a person is supposed to be, and if you don't reach that expectation you're sub-par or not good
Secondly, we come to the element of Self-Sacrifice. This is also another widely used theme in Les Miserables. One such example of this element is with Valjean. He lets Marius and Cosette marry, and for a while, he seems all right with that fact. Later on however, he goes to Marius, and confesses to his past. He tells Marius his whole story, and thinks it best if he never sees Cosette again. Marius agrees…but allows Valjean the occasional visit. Only at the end, does Marius realize what a good man Valjean is…and by then it was too late. Valjean dies shortly after Marius and Cosette visit him to ask him to come back and live with them.
In many films, the antagonists are usually ignored and are perceived to the audiences as just the bad guys. However, for this research paper, it will go in dept of antagonist background stories of what makes these characters good and evil, focusing on animation film Arrietty, Ponyo, princess mononoke and Spirited away, directed by Miyazaki to answer the question of what makes the audience perceive these characters as bad or good antagonist.
The power of childhood innocence reveals more about one another than any other force in nature. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee creates the unjust rape trial of Tom Robinson to shed light upon how the power of childhood innocence reveals the true racially-based corruption of the time period. Through the eyes of a child named Scout and the focus on two other child protagonists, Dill and Jean, Lee highlights the way a child views the world versus those jaded by the depravity of humanity. Harper Lee focuses upon the characterization of Scout, Dill, and Jean to present the idea that childhood innocence sees the true evils of society through a non-judgmental lens.
Mariam and Laila are considerate, bold and protective while all their rights as humans are being oppressed. They can be courageous when there is everything to be afraid of, yet they take the risk, because they know it is right. Both will protect when they haven’t been protected from the danger of oppression. Laila and Mariam can be sympathetic in an inconsiderate world. Together, Mariam and Laila exemplify the hidden defiance against oppression, a burning fire counterattacking the darkness.
A Wrinkle in Time is a fun and entertaining book to read. There are many themes shown in the book I like the theme love because it shows that the characters are loving to each other and they also care for each other. Meg, (one of the main characters in the book.) at the beginning learns to show love in the situations. Meg kept on using her father as an excuse at school. Meg shows love by loving her brother because it says in the book”And on the way home from school, walking up the road with her arms full of books, on of the boys had said something about her ( dumb baby brother). At this time she’d thrown her books on the side of the road and tackled him with every ounce of strength she had, and arrived home with her blouse torn and a big bruise under one eye.” (L’engle, pg 8)This shows love by Meg caring for her brother so much she would tackle them and in the end she would get a marking left on her.
Megan Wickingson Orrick Honors English Language Arts 9, Hour 4 18 April 2014. Lewis Carroll employs the elements of theme, setting, and narrator/voice in his piece Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Theme is an important element in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It helps the reader to better understand what is happening as time goes on. Though there are many, one theme in particular is death.
