When first reading Anthem you might be horrified by the collectivist society that lives there and you might think that surely collectivism doesn’t live on in the USA. However, the truth is collectivism lives on in every country, city, and town in this world, and the USA is included. A perfect example of this is laws, the biggest form of collectivism in the real world and in Anthem. Laws confine us to what others think is right and wrong, but that is not the only thing that makes them collectivism. What makes laws collectivism is the fact that they push others into the same thinking and put what the group thinks is right in front of what the individual thinks is right. For these reasons laws can be considered “bad” or “evil”, but when we think about it, are they really? Laws may confine us, but for good reason; they do not confine us in order to control how we feel, rather to protect us and bring justice to citizens while setting the same boundaries for everyone. Another form of collectivism in USA are movements. Over the last couple years more and more movements have emerged or reemerged. Movements, such as Times’ Up, Black Lives Matter, and March For Our Lives, have brought attention and addressed problems in our society in order to come to a solution, so our whole society is improved. Movements like these promote collectivism in order to bring a change by bringing people together in order to achieve the same goal. This is collectivism because a group of people are putting the needs of each other or a common goal, above their own goals. Other significant example of collectivism in the USA are unions. Over years unions have been considered good and bad by many people. While it is challenging to say if they do for sure help our community, I can say with certainty that they are collectivism. Take a look at the UFW, United Farm Workers of America, for example. Farm workers worked together to accomplish the common goal of improving working conditions on farms.
