Throughout the book, ‘Everything, Everything”, the idea of assimilation is shown through symbolism, imagery, and figurative language.. Across the book, there are out-of-the-ordinary methods and hints that depict what the word “assimilation” means. Assimilation is also displayed with theme, to be brave and take risks. Maddy had to take risks and be courageous in order to adapt to her new world and find love. Author of ‘Everything, Everything”, Nicola Yoon showed hidden ideas of symbolism to give the reader the sensation of assimilation. For example, the white room in Maddy’s house is symbolic of how clean and disinfected Maddy’s entire life had to be in order to keep her from getting sick. By subversion, I mean the process by which Bei Dao uses unconventional meanings of conventional symbols to undermine accepted literary norms. That is, he offers in place of the common associations of a symbol, another symbolic association that draws its meaning from the context of the narrative. Indeed, the very meaning of the narrative is couched in the language of metaphors and symbols. It is here that the author constructs a narrative using conventional symbols which play upon and also against the reader's expectations. Before we examine the means by which the author subverts the archetypal notions of symbols, it is first imperative to understand how these symbols stand in relation to the narrative and the reader.
In the novel Graceling there are many important characters including the main character Katsa, her uncle King Randa, and her friend Po. Kristin Cashore uses symbolism in many cases to provide more information about these characters without telling the reader directly, so the individual could form their own opinion on the information given. Symbolism, when used in the right book and the right context, could prove to be an extremely useful tool for the author. Throughout the novel Graceling, author Kristin Cashore uses many symbols to give insight on the growth and portrayal of the characters.
The symbolism used in “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst impacts the story by indirectly giving the reader relationships between two objects or ideas. The three main symbols are the seasons, the go cart, and the tombstone. These are proven by Doodle’s progress throughout the year, the hardship that Brother faces handling Doodle, and the imminent death of the baby. Again, Hurst uses symbolism to describe Doodle’s family and all the emotions surrounding them.
So many things have said about the cultural assimilation, and so many people have struggled to live the new society to prove themselves and work hard to absorb the new life by learning the language and new culture. So many people devoted their lives to assimilate to be part of American society. Cultural assimilation does not only means to survive in the new life, but also people who try to fit in the new society. A society where people are not judged by their class, money, or education, but are determined by race, color, religion, and where they come from. Do we really and profoundly feel what it means to be part of new society? Do we keep following the stereotypes that we have created in our very own minds, which is, if we speak the same language with same exact dialect, and we share common interests from the new culture, we lose our own cultural roots or background? To make a long story short, what is cultural assimilation means? One of the brilliant examples from personal experience is revealing a particular point of view on the matter of the outstanding work of Richard Rodriguez “Hunger of Memory”. Rodriguez shows cultural assimilation in his personal examples, and displays the issue completely by talking about himself as a Mexican-American who tried to survive a new way of life to become something of himself. In this book, Rodriguez tries to idealize not only his way of life when he assimilates, but he includes his feeling of being alienated from his own culture, his background, society, and his family. Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.
Symbols are a particularly effective way to make a story more interesting and can add to the different themes in a story. Symbols in the short story, “Interpreter of Maladies” by Jhumpa Lahiri, help to add to the main theme of communication. Some of the symbols that add to the theme of communication in the story are the environment, Mrs. Das’s puffed rice, and Mr. Das’s camera. Each one of the symbols brings up issues with how the Das family communicates or issues with the lack of communication within the Das family.
While reading short stories, two stood out: Ernest Hemingway’s Hills Like White Elephants and Raymond Carver’s Cathedral. The themes in both stories are powerful and convey strong messages that really pose existential thoughts. Not only is each story’s theme attention grabbing, but so is the common and reoccurring use of symbolism throughout the stories. They did not just use the Element of Fiction symbolism, but even used one common symbol. Ernest Hemingway’s story Hills Like White Elephants and Raymond Carver’s story Cathedral each contain existential and similar themes such as talking versus communicating and looking versus seeing, as well as demonstrating creative and comparable symbolism throughout.
Immigration and assimilation is a divisive topic that has been heavily debated in America ever since we became a country. There are two stories that explore the assimilation issue from different viewpoints’; in Mary Pipher’s story; “The Beautiful Laughing Sisters – An Arrival Story”; provides the viewpoint of immigrants leaving a hostile home for America. Elizabeth Wong details her journey to break with her culture and become Americanized in, “The Struggle to be an all American girl.” and (McWhorter, 2010 pp522-529). At debate today is whether immigrants and their families should blend into American culture even if it means breaking with their past. Once cultures intermingle, they are forever changed.
Through realistic tones that the authors create in Chato and Didion’s first person narration, it is easy to notice how unsurreal the world is. As their stories continue, the tones in their narration separate paths. In “The Somebody,” Chato’s tone is ironically optimistic, and in ‘Goodbye To All That,” Didion’s tone is filled with nostalgia and regret. Overall, there is a circling theme that revolves around the characters independence and how to use that to self-discovery the outside world and other aspects of it. And with that, they center themselves so that the world can be theirs and not someone else’s.
Everything is a symbol. Everything has a deeper being in which it represents once it is unlocked. The father of deconstruction, Jacques Derrida, was quoted in an interview saying that deconstruction is “to not naturalize what is not natural”. Therefore symbolism is deconstruction in its rawest form. Symbols beg to not be taken at their natural face-value, but rather dived into to reach their deep inner-core of true meaning. One must use every element of deconstruction to unlock the true meaning of a symbol. Symbolism in literature allows the author to express his thoughts and motives in a way that is engaging and entertaining to the reader. The reader must dissect every bit of knowledge presented in order to reach the full fountain of knowledge that can be expressed by a symbol. Symbols are a beautiful thing. It allows the reader to make his own connections to the author’s expressions. The reader can especially be engaged in George Orwell’s 1949 dystopian novel 1984. Symbolism is important in 1984 because the reader can find connections to today’s government in Orwell’s message of control, propaganda, and oppression within the symbols that Orwell creates.
The analysis argues the use of symbolism as it applies to the aspects of the characters and their relationships. Henrik Ibsen’s extensive use of symbols is applied to capture the reader’s attention. Symbols like the Christmas tree, the locked mailbox, the Tarantella, Dr. Rank’s calling cards, and the letters add a delicate meaning to the characters and help convey ideas and themes throughout the play.
To begin, I want to define assimilation which according to the Oxford dictionary means “The absorption and integration of people, ideas, or culture into a wider society or culture” After see this definition I may say that we as humans, we are always trying to adapt to new cultural environments in the places where we are living. So, when a child or an adult move to a different place or to a different country, they consciously or unconsciously tend to adjust themselves to the new culture of the dominant population. Talking about assimilation I think that a person in his/her own choice, can opt how much they want to integrate to the new culture.
