Tim O 'Brien 's use of casual language creates a friendly and yet personal atmosphere for the reader. He intentionally draws the audience in under the false pretences of an ethical persona, using statements such as, “ this is true”(How to. 87) and “it 's all exactly true”(How to. 89). This deception intensifies the reader 's emotional reaction towards the end of the story when O 'Brien completely contradicts his earlier statements. Much like the ups and downs of a roller coaster, the story takes the reader on an emotional ride; where one feels secure and comfortable in one moment and in the next moment becomes disoriented and confused. This allows for a trust to be established between the author and his audience. In, An Ordinary Man, the author is straight forward about his resources: I had a five story building. I had a cooler full of drinks. I had a small stack of cash in the safe. And I had a working telephone and I had my tongue. It wasn 't much(xi). This humble matter of fact story-telling demonstrates an ethos approach. Rusesabagina speaks his truth. He does not exaggerate nor add any unnecessary elements to his story. His scrupulous method of story- telling earns the readers ' trust, thus verifying the author 's information as being truthful. David Wright identifies an ethos strategy, “Ethos: Can rely on reputation or experience to prove a point. Credibility is key to winning an audience 's belief and support for one 's argument”(2 of 2). Rusesabagina 's writing technique is nearly an exact template for an ethos strategy which persists throughout the entire story. The subject matter presented is that of a serious nature and the writer educates the audience in a direct manner. Heinrichs begins by explaining the art of rhetoric and laying out the basic tools of argument. He emphasizes the importance of using the proper tense to avoid arguing the wrong issue. Furthermore, he introduces logos, ethos and pathos and shows how to “wield” each rhetorical tool. In Part 2, Heinrichs discusses common logical fallacies as well as rhetorical fouls. He remarks rhetoric’s single rule of never arguing the inarguable and demonstrates how ethos helps to know whom to trust. Maybe the point of telling stories is not trying to recreate the reality of a past event, but it is the message that matters because that might be in the end the only thing that does not necessarily depend on single details of the story, but on the overall picture of an event. That is why to O’Brien another important component of a war story is the fact that a war story will never pin down the definite truth and that is why a true war story “never seems to end” (O’Brien, 425). O’Brien moves the reader from the short and simple statement “This is the truth” to the conclusion that, “In war you lose your sense of the definite, hence your sense of truth itself and therefore it’s safe to say that in a true war story nohting much is ever very true” (O’Brien, 428). These two statements frame the entire irony of the story, from its beginning to its end. Almost like the popular saying “A wise man admits that he knows nothing.”

In the story, “The Killing Game”, Joy Williams, uses several diffenent types of writing skills to presuade the reader to see her views.
Stories, both factual and manipulated, present different things to a reader. Factual writings help readers visualize the actual moment, but may not have them feeling the same as the author felt. Manipulated writings however, are superior in the fact that emotion through writing can actually help readers see a situation for what it really is. Distortions in manipulated writing are beneficial to the reader by providing more sensory imagery, even if it costs presenting the complete truth.
Often, when a story is told, it follows the events of the protagonist. It is told in a way that justifies the reasons and emotions behind the protagonist actions and reactions. While listening to the story being cited, one tends to forget about the other side of the story, about the antagonist motivations, about all the reasons that justify the antagonist actions.
Typically, a novel contains four basic parts: a beginning, middle, climax, and the end. The beginning sets the tone for the book and introduces the reader to the characters and the setting. The majority of the novel comes from middle where the plot takes place. The plot is what usually captures the reader’s attention and allows the reader to become mentally involved. Next, is the climax of the story. This is the point in the book where everything comes together and the reader’s attention is at the fullest. Finally, there is the end. In the end of a book, the reader is typically left asking no questions, and satisfied with the outcome of the previous events. However, in the novel The Things They Carried the setup of the book is quite different. This book is written in a genre of literature called “metafiction.” “Metafiction” is a term given to fictional story in which the author makes the reader question what is fiction and what is reality. This is very important in the setup of the Tim’s writing because it forces the reader to draw his or her own conclusion about the story. However, this is not one story at all; instead, O’Brien writes the book as if each chapter were its own short story. Although all the chapters have relation to one another, when reading the book, the reader is compelled to keep reading. It is almost as if the reader is listening to a “soldier storyteller” over a long period of time.

In much of The Things They Carried, stories are retold time and time again. One reason for this is the idea of keeping a story’s story-truth alive. In “Good Form,” O’Brien differentiates what he calls story-truth from happening-truth. Story-truth seems to give us a better understanding of O’Brien’s sentiment in a particular story even though the story itself may not be true at all. On the other hand, happening-truth is what actually happened in the story, but may not contain as much emotional authenticity as story-truth. According to O’Brien, story-truth is therefore truer than happening-truth. Relating back to storytelling, O’Brien retells stories continuously to maintain their sentiment and emotional value. Without this continuous repetition, this sentiment fades away and the emotional value of the story is lost.
