Symbolism has many effects, especially around the world and in stories. It is a term used on an object or an event to represent ideas that are more abstract than the literal meaning of the object itself. In the story, A Chair for My Mother, by Vera B. Williams, there were several events and objects that represented an idea. One of the objects was a jar of coins which symbolized teamwork and support, resilience, diligence and determination. To begin, the jar of coins signified teamwork and support. Teamwork and support is when a group of people are able to work together to achieve a goal and help each other out when needed. This was shown several times in the story. Rosa and her mother worked together to earn enough money for a chair. For instance, …show more content…
Being resilient is when one is able to recover quickly from a difficult situation. In A Chair for My Mother, Rosa and her mother showed resiliency. When Rosa and her mother’s home burnt down, nothing was left behind. Rosa and her mother were able to recover quickly from the incident and Rosa’s mother immediately worked harder in order for them to buy a new home. This showed that they were able to stay strong, specifically during the hard times. Furthermore, Rosa’s mother did not earn a lot of money at the Blue Tile Diner. For example, Rosa said, “Sometimes my mama is laughing when she comes home from work. Sometimes she’s so tired she falls asleep … Some days she has lots of tips. Some days she has only a little. Then she looks worried” (Williams 2). This demonstrated that although Rosa’s mother was worried about how much money she brought home each evening, she was able to still remain strong and continued to work hard. Although the jar symbolized Rosa and her mother’s resiliency throughout the story, diligence was shown the most by Rosa and her mother as the jar was getting even more …show more content…
If one is constantly diligent and determined, then their goal will be achievable. This was shown by Rosa and her mother in the story. They worked hard to obtain their dream chair. To illustrate, when Rosa said, “It takes a long time to fill a jar this big. Every day when my mother comes home from work, I take down the jar. My mama empties all her change from tips out of her purse for me to count then we push all of the coins into the jar” (Williams 2), it showed that Rosa’s mother was willing to work every day until the late evening in order for Rosa and herself to get their dream chair. Rosa also sometimes went to the Blue Tile Diner to work and earned money. Normally, after school, kids would hang out with their friends or go straight home. This showed that since Rosa was so determined to get a chair, she gave up part of her social life. They were determined to fill the jar with coins even when they knew it would take a long time. Moreover, Rosa’s mother was diligent when doing her job. For instance, Rosa’s mother sometimes came home from work tired that she would fall asleep while Rosa was counting out the coins into piles. Rosa also said, “When mama comes home, her feet hurt. ‘There’s no good place for me to take a load off my feet,’ she says” (Williams 7). This showcased how Rosa’s mother worked hard at the diner. She was always on her feet while she was working. If she was not working hard enough then she would
Symbolism is one of the most effective and powerful elements in writing. We see various examples of this all throughout "The Things They Carried." Symbolism enables us to tell a story one way, while all along trying to say another. I believe Tim O'Brien has achieved success in doing so in "The Things They Carried."
Acosta portrays the quilt as a memoir type deal and makes it into a precious piece of herself for her kids to have with them. Walker signifies the quilts as being special to her and her family heritage and refused to give them to someone who won't respect their meaning, even if it is her own daughter. Anything has what it takes to be of some significance and it doesn’t matter what that thing is. What means the most is how valued that significance is and how well the heritage is kept
Symbolism can be defined as “the representation of a reality on one level of reference by a corresponding reality on another” (“Symbolism” 564). The word symbol comes from the Greek word "symballein," which translates literally into “to throw together” and suggests the combining of two unrelated worlds. Much...
Symbolism is a major literary device that helps people see a book through symbols that often have a deeper meaning. A symbol is used to explain something in a different way, using images, objects, etc. instead of just saying it in words. As you search for a deeper meaning in a work of art or literature, it can help you understand the authors intentions and the deeper significance of a work. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, symbols help reinforce the major themes of the book. Fire and flames have been used as symbols by many authors.
Over the course of the story, one of the many amiable qualities that Dillard admires is her determination. For example, Dillard calls her mom “an unstoppable force” (pg. 113) after the post office made her change her address. Dillard has a surprised attitude towards it because she commented that she did not “know how she did it”. She had an even more surprised attitude when the worker listens to her and they do that same thing. Dillard’s mothers determination
Symbolism is a literary device in which words, phrases or actions allude to something more than their literal meanings. In the short story “A Jury of Her Peers”, a major example of symbolism is the quilt. The quilt is perhaps the biggest example because it can be tied to many other examples of symbolism within the story, and can also be interpreted in different ways.
middle of paper ... ... Her actions of comparing herself as a son in her family, failing to recognize the importance of hard work, and discovering her own happiness symbolizes a person who fails to acknowledge that perfection is not as important than being satisfied with her accomplishments of attending to college, passing all her classes, and receiving family support. To emphasize, if the speaker had realized that getting a perfect grade point average is not what defines her as a person, then she would have comprehended that grades are just a way to motivate her to not forfeit on herself. Therefore, if the speaker desires to find her personal satisfaction, she should look at all the hard work that she has achieved in her classes and comprehend that life is not all about getting a perfect grade point average and perfection.
...e of the meanings to be determined by the reader, but clearly conveys the meaning behind others. Such variety provides something or someone for any reader to relate to. Symbolism, hidden or obvious, serves to connect the reader with the characters of “The Things They Carried” and follow their development with interest and ease. In many cases, symbols answer the question which the entire story is based upon, why the men carry the things they do.
The ability to persevere through hardships and trials were her teachings. Lessons learned were those of strength and determination. The proof of this is evident in a few of his literary works where a mother figure encourages and teaches her child, or student, life lessons on staying on the course. In the poem “Mother to Son” a mother tells of her persistence through life’s obstacles, encouraging her son not to give up. “Well, son, I’ll tell you.
Symbolism is something that represents more than what it really is. It is often by authors in their writing to give it more emphasis. For example:" In life there will always be peaks and valleys" meaning in life there will be ups and downs but we should enjoy the peaks and fight through the valleys. Objects can also be a form of symbolism such as The Bible, it represents more than just a book. It represents Life, Church, Religion, and the life of Jesus Christ and what he stood for. Irony is like a twist or words or the opposite of what is intended. For example: Laughing at someone that just slipped and fell, then later you find yourself slipping and falling is a form of irony. Irony is found in real life situations as well as writings. Symbolism is a technique that gives authors a better story and shows objects as more than what they are. They use techniques like this to catch the reader’s attention.
In almost every story, one can find symbolism throughout the text to help the reader better understand what the writer wants the reader to takeout from his/her story. Symbolism is something that must be analyzed and explored to experience a deeper meaning to the story. Sometimes, symbolism throughout a story may not be noticeable when first read, but going back to analyze the text can add a deeper meaning to words and can also help to enhance the meaning behind the story line. In some instances, symbolism can leave a reader to ponder what the writer is trying to express with the symbolism used in the story; for symbolism can be interpreted differently and can have many layers of meaning to it. Some good examples of short stories that use symbolism
Writers often use symbolism in the story to give a more vivid description rather than just saying, pictures are a perfect example. Symbolism is the art of using any object, place, name or anything that represents something rather
Throughout the story there are several aspects of the Protagonist’s character that play a major role in the shaping of her future. During her childhood she often demonstrates a sense of fear when she is sent to her bedroom. “We were afraid of the inside, the room were we slept (pg. 549).” She is intimidated by her personal space because she does not have control over it. Later, she gains control by adding lace to her side of the room; symbolically adding personality to herself and slipping into womanhood. When she felt uncomfortable she exercised her imagination, to psychologically regain control over the confusion in her life. Her subconscious effort to control confusing times were carried on to her later years as she was constantly put in difficult situations, which helped her to adjust quickly to change during adulthood. The dreams she created changed when she began to place emphasis on her appearance-that which she could control, other than past dreams of heroism that seemed so distant from reality. The Protagonist filled her childhood with much pride and maintained a consistent focused upon the activities that filled her childhood. She relished working at the side of her father, taking immense pride in every aspect of her assigned duties. She proclaimed, “I worked willingly under his eyes, and with a feeling of pride (pg. 551)” Once after her father introduced her to a feed sales man as “my new hired man (pg. 551),” the Protagonist was flooded with pride as she “turned away and raked furiously, red in the face with pleasure (pg. 551).” In her later years her pride helped her to assemble strong self-confidence she used in her years of growing. Passion and depth were characteristics that impacted her future as a woman. Her passion and depth was revealed early on in the story ...
Symbolism is defined as the representation; treatment or interpretation of things as symbolic. In society and in particular, literature, symbolism is a prominent component that helps to illustrate a deeper meaning then perceived by the reader. Symbolism can be anything, a person, place or thing, used to portray something beyond itself. It is used to represent or foreshadow the conclusion of the story. In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies symbolism of the main characters Ralph, Jack and Simon plays a very important role in helping to show how our society functions and the different types of personalities that exist. An examination of Simon as a symbol of good, Ralph as a symbol of the common man, and Jack as a symbol of evil, clearly illustrates that William Golding uses characters as a symbol of what is really happening in the outside world throughout the novel.
Rosa was a teen mom who grew up in severe poverty, and while she did not begin drugs until later in life, this could be representative of the double failure finally setting in. After years of struggle, trying to support her family through whatever legitimate means necessary, she experiences the heroin high for the first time and the pain is gone. From that point, she has to continue with those illegitimate sources in order to keep up her habits, and she is unable to achieve social mobility so that her children aren’t also raised in the conditions that contributed to her criminality. So they go through the same thing, as the subculture which Rosa raised them in becomes their primary source of reference and self-esteem. Even though Ducky does work a legitimate job at one point, he still only used the money he made to feed his drug
