Malo realizes that money rules everything. It is simple, you either have or do not have money. The normal saying goes as follows: Money is the root of all evil. Malo feels different towards this statement. He feels that money is not the root of all evil, not having money is. This became clear to him when he was riding around with Scoop and Amir. He even noticed that there are several songs about money.
Malo notes that people even treat you different when you have money. He references that females react different to a man with money, and if you do not have money you will be pushed to the side. Malo wants to become a hustler. He meets up with Bone, a drug dealer that he knows through Amir. Malo begins an illegal lifestyle by selling marijuana.
The chapter closes with an excerpt from his mother’s journal. She talks about how the public schools in Philadelphia are not safe, and that they are known for trouble. She wants to protect Malo, and she wants him to get his education. She notices how he has changed, and understands that he needs to explore the world on his own. Amina just wants the best for Malo, and cannot grasp the fact that both of her sons are not taking life seriously.
Being a college student can be hard. I do not always get what I want now. Money does rule everything. Without money a person could not even buy necessities. As I ride around with my friends I notice the fact that if you do not have money, you do not have power. I also notice that if you do not have education, you will not have money. Money does rule a lot of things in the life of a college student. As a young adult with minimal responsibilities I would like to go out and have fun from time to time.
