The writing process is no simple task. From brainstorming, creating an outline, to implementing ideas into a coherent paper requires a strong understanding of the task at hand. Looking back at the classes leading up to first year writing this semester, I can seee were my prior knowledge has proven to be helpful. In Ap language and composition in high school, the writing process began to be something of enjoyment. The most important information was how to identify aspects of a paper that would answer the general question of analysis, “What is the author trying to convey to the reader?” Responding to this question is it important to look at the aspects of writing which including: tone, diction, style, syntax, and word choice. Moulder, I know I can go forward feeling comfortable in rhetorical writing situations. From the first essay in the class on writing about immigration and belonging, I found her perspective to be informative and eye opening in connecting my own experiences to the past. I completely skipped the affects of immigration on Native Americans as I state, “ When Caleb purchased 6,000 acres of land in this acquisition of land from the Native American people, this solidified his placed both in Rhode Island socially and financially” (PAGE IMMIGRATION para 1). While the line gives significant data about the acquisition of land, I cut out the whole other side of the story, which is the killing and taking of the land by my ancestors. These details are huge as it highlights the fact that my success is founded on death and the idea of white supremacy— both of which are terrible. After the addition of that information my essay sounded more comprehensive on the history of America compared to the white-based interpretation that I touched on in my first draft. In office hours, I found that simply consulting ideas with Dr. Moulder was beneficial in my writing process. The idea of looking at emotions, credibility, evidence type, and genre type was powerful in my writing process. Credibility is valuable in writing, as it establishes the evidence type and emotions of the reader on the topic, and reading others writing in the class I found this to be especially true. An example of this can be seen in the digital essay presentation. When a group would present data that seemed promising, I would immediately look at the source as it holds more value than the data presented, and without a citation the evidence is basically void. Following with the evidence type, the genre that one chooses to write in can effect the emotions and evidence selected. Looking at the Mendelson law review from the course packet, I found that the genre type presented her data well and allowed for a smooth blending of court briefs and personal knowledge in a well drafted review of immigration in the US. For example, looking at my group presentation with Kelly and Reijer (PAGE), I recall doing research and even visiting her LinkedIn site to get as much background on her occupation, education, and publications. From this research I was able to find even her current occupation as we stated, “She practiced law in Southern Arizona” (PAGE MENDELSON HANDOUT). The Essay, I have chosen to read from is ReReading America was An Indian Story by Roger Jack. The topic of this narrative explores the life of an Indian boy who grows up away from his father in the Pacific Northwest. Roger Jack describes the growing up of a young Indian boy to a man, who lives away from his father. Roger demonstrates values of the Indian culture and their morals through exploration of family ties and change in these specific ties. He also demonstrates that growing up away from one’s father doesn’t mean one can’t be successful in life, it only takes a proper role model, such as the author provides for the young boy.
In the article, “Understanding Writing Assignments: Tips and Techniques,” author Dan Melzer shares with his audience seven useful suggestions to keep in mind when starting any writing assignment. Melzer’s first tips are for readers to examine their rubrics for any key verbs that will tell writers what approach and genre their paper should have. Knowing what kind of writing your teacher wants will not only help a writer get started, it will also inform a writer what they can research to view examples. Next, he tells his readers to write for their specific audience, to make sure they know their teacher’s expectations, and to take into account what they have learned in class. In English 1102, I was exposed to a variety of different genres, including, argumentative research paper, an annotated bibliography, an analytical paper, and a workplace specific piece. Entering this class the majority of papers I had written were all analytical, and in this class we went above and beyond the basic 5 paragraph essay. Though each paper had a different genre and style, I learned that each project was similar in composition.
As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. Following the criteria of staying motivated in short and long term goals, taking responsibility for actions and finally the ability to study well will help me develop into a supreme student.
Before high school, I was in a middle school in a country where English wasn’t a first language. Instead of analyzing text or writing persuasive essays, I was learning how to communicate. Being one of the few students at my school who reads books out loud at home or who watch movies and talk after the characters, I was able to grasp the idea of using evidence, rhetorical devices and diction. When I came to the United States and learned how to include those in my writing was a wonderful experience. Understanding Shakespeare, analyzing poems by Emily Dickinson and being able to visualize Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” opened up the world of writing and its impact for me. Using “I” in writing was all I learned in middle school with a class full of kids with the same background while wanting to above and beyond. Writing personal journals, leaning tenses and memorizing definitions didn’t quench my thirst of learning how to write a well written work like the one’s I read in my native language. Williams argues that culture should be included in writing and teachers should tolerate that while I have a different point of view on the subject. As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. Recently, I have been writing quite a few essays and papers throughout my college experience. This entails, but not limited to, English, History, and Economics. My style of writing and methods have generally remained the same throughout the process. I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. The essay, both art form and bane of English students worldwide, originated in France around 1570. Born from the reflections of one man, ultimately inspired by personal reflection, the essay is now a staple of the literary world. As a work of nonfiction, grounded in truth, yet embellished with literary trappings, the essay serves a myriad of purposes. Whether written to inform, persuade, or tell a story, the essay is a form embraced the world over as the original form of non-fiction writing. Long before biographies and creative non-fiction stories, essays dominated the literary non-fiction landscape. In Judith Cofer’s The Myth of the Latin Woman and James Weldon Johnson’s Outcasts in Salt Lake City, we find tales of minorities dealing with the difficulties of growing up in a country not entirely prepared for their existence. Each essay deals with this paradigm in its own way, telling a story of minority difficulties in a unique light. While both prove effective, Johnson’s Outcasts in Salt Lake City more effectively demonstrates the difficulties of growing up different in a society that refuses to accept diversity. Though both essays highlight these difficulties, Johnson more effectively employs the available literary devices in his outstanding work.
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. In the chapter, “Internal Revision,” Murray discusses the writing process and how we as teachers should teach it. He states, “And yet rewriting is one of the writing skills least researched, least examined, least understood, and—usually—least taught” (75). I believe that rewriting is a vital step of writing an essay, story, or anything that you are putting together. Growing up in school, I never had a revision time. Once it was due, we had to turn it in and then we get it back with a letter grade. With not knowing why you got the grade and how you can fix it makes you discouraged for the next assignment. Every essay begins with a blank stare into space, an exasperated sigh, and the inevitable thought: what am I going write about? Or at least that is how they used to begin, and this process may have continued for hours, or even days, with each time I sat down determined to write nothing would make it on the paper. This became a major roadblock in my writing process, because every essay took an unreasonable amount of time thinking about how to approach this topic, typing sentences out and the deleting them. Finally, an idea would come and I would begin to write, the words would finally spill out onto the paper. The terrible experience writing forced me to figure out a new way to brainstorm my essay weeks before the essay was assigned.
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. Writing is one of most difficult subjects to master due to the writing tactics many writers use and the different tips followed for the various writing topics. A writer will elaborate strongly when pressure is not included during the time they are writing. If a writer feels pressure while writing a paper it will become visible to readers that the writer was not comfortable causing them confusion. Another important factor to take under consideration is the time that the author spends when writing because it will reflect on their critic’s opinions. When writers feel freedom to include all their ideas their writing becomes a jargon of ideas however, if given a prompt writing is more clear and straightforward. Prompts give writers the topic and the rest is based on research and opinion that they must make efforts to mirror in their writing. Although critics may apply that giving writers prompts does not allow the writers to express themselves entirely, writers are given a topic to take a stance and effectively explain why. The materials used throughout writing affect the effectiveness of a writing sample. If adequate articles and reliable websites are utilized to formulate opinions on an essay prompt, when cited properly, it is more likely for the essay to be effective. Reliable articles and websites should be analyzed very carefully to absorb only information that relates to the topic and the writers opinion. Proof reading and formatting are also critical to a writing sample because they affect how the author’s main claim is explained. Writers are able to write more effectively when avoiding pressure, given prompts, and evaluate reliable resources to further their opinions.
