Everyone looks at the world through a lens. It is not a literal lens such as the eye or a cornea, but rather a filter through which an individual perceives the world. This so-called filter is shaped and influenced by their personality, childhood, beliefs, religion, experiences, and biases. A person interprets and reacts to the world based on their understanding of events as communicated through the lens of their worldview. My definition is therefore an individual’s perception of the world through their personal filter. In her essay “Seeing”, Annie Dillard focuses on showing how different people have different perceptions. Dillard gives multiple examples to support her main idea, which is that preconceived and inherited notions influence our perceptions. Dillard discusses the different ways of seeing, how people with different backgrounds have different experiences with seeing, and many more. While Dillard’s idea about perceptions is definitely relevant and accurate, but are certainly not complete as there are multiple things that influence our perceptions.
What is a worldview? A worldview is an idea or thought that manifest in our brain but is originated from how we perceive and feel towards events that happen during our life. The opinions we express outwardly in action disseminates to others with whom we surround ourselves with, and vise versa. Collectively we take in worldviews and judge them to our own view, and settle on a conscious agreement to what we hold to be truth.
