In Walter Benjamin’s essay, “The Work of Art In The Age of Mechanical Reproduction”, he argues that in the result of art no longer being created for traditional and ritualistic value, that now, in the age of mechanical reproduction, art will be based on politics. Benjamin goes on to say that the art that was once created in the past served a different purpose and as the reader, it is important to understand the context then and understand the modern techniques of art. Throughout the essay, Benjamin mentions that the aura of art has been lost through the mechanical reproduction and that aura is longer alive and is only a part of some unrealistic space. This leads to a concept that Benjamin introduces called “aura” and in order to understand aura it is also important to know about the concept of authenticity. For example, a stage actor is able to feed off of the audience’s reactions during the live performance, compared to a film actor that doesn’t have that advantage and must imagine the storyline in their head and act it out how they believe they should. Also, films are created by putting fragments of clips together. Once, the recordings and filming has been done from various locations, time, etc., it can uses technology to combine all of the good shots that the editors believe in order to create a final product. A certain emotion or an “aura” is said to be present when an artist creates an art work. However, some of the reproduction pieces inside Kinkade’s signature gallery are highlighted by his specially trained assistant; I believe these paintings are no longer evoking this so-called “aura” of the original work. Aura is something that cannot be duplicated. Reproductions of art pieces are simply tangible and concrete object. They are digital imitations that “could be soaked in water, peeled off the paper, and affixed to a stretched canvas, so that it showed the texture of the canvas the way a real painting would.” As Benjamin stated, “… the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be.” The original paintings have their own unique characters and history, and these are not the things that art reproductions can generate. The earliest forms of art had made it’s mark in history for being an influential and unique representation of various cultures and religions as well as playing a fundamental role in society. However, with the new era of postmodernism, art slowly deviated away from both the religious context it was originally created in, and apart from serving as a ritual function. Walter Benjamin, a German literary critic and philosopher during the 1900’s, strongly believed that the mass production of pieces has freed art from the boundaries of tradition, “For the first time in world history, mechanical reproduction emancipates the work of art from its parasitical dependance on ritual” (Benjamin 1992). This particular excerpt has a direct correlation with the work of Andy Warhol, specifically “Silver Liz as Cleopatra.” Andy Warhol’s rendition of Elizabeth Taylor are prime examples of the shift in art history that Benjamin refers to as the value of this particular piece is based upon its mass production, and appropriation of iconic images and people.

Confirming Berger’s argument, when I viewed this piece of art, I was amazed by it. It invited me in and I spent a long period of time looking at, and looking into it. Although the environment of the museum added to my experience of viewing the artwork, if the original painting had looked as vibrant and colorful as the reproduction, the painting would have been even more intriguing. If I had seen the reproduction first, I know that I would not have been pulled into this piece of art.
Benjamin stressed the Marxist democratization of art through digital reproduction, a media which allows for de-emphasizing the original work of art. Throughout the history of arts, particularly visual arts, we have revered the individual paintings created by artists, locating them in exclusive galleries and museums which are subject to the tastes and privilege of the upper class philanthropic elite. The value of a work is based in part by which wealthy patrons have owned or commissioned it, and the history of a canvas often becomes more important than the actual formal representation on it.
From the creation of art to its modern understanding, artists have strived to perform and perfect a photo realistic painting with the use of complex lines, blend of colors, and captivating subjects. This is not the case anymore due to the invention of the camera in 1827, since it will always be the ultimate form of realism. Due to this, artists had the opportunities to branch away from the classical formation of realism, and venture into new forms such as what is known today as modern art. In the examination of two well known artists, Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, we can see that the artist doesn’t only intend for the painting to be just a painting, but more of a form of telling a scene through challenging thoughts, and expressing of the artists emotion in their creation.
Whilst the relationship which the photograph bears to its subject may be entirely different to the relationship which the painting bears to its subject, this does not necessarily entail that one must reject the photograph as an equally worthy object of aesthetic appreciation. As a final remark, in addition to photography’s capacity to arouse an interest in the subject photographed in a manner that transcends face-to-face viewing, the fact that the photograph boasts the ability to suspend its subject in time is also indicative of its transcendence of face-to-face viewing. If one takes an aesthetic interest in Vivian Maier’s photographs of children playing in a street in the 1950’s, for instance, this would evidently not be equivalent to viewing the same subjects directly in the present moment. As such, the photograph’s ‘distance’ from its subject, both physical and temporal, is perhaps further reason to distinguish it from face-to-face seeing, and may be indicative of its worth as a visual art form. Thus, contra Scruton, paintings and photographs are equally worthy of aesthetic appreciation as visual art forms, and photographic transparency is not synonymous with photographic
Modern art serves to immerse us more thoroughly in a scene by touching on more than just our sight. Artists such as Grosz, and Duchamp try to get us to feel instead of just see. It seems that this concept has come about largely as a way to regain identity after shedding the concepts of the Enlightenment. “Philosophers, writers, and artists expressed disillusionment with the rational-humanist tradition of the Enlightenment. They no longer shared the Enlightenment's confidence in either reason's capabilities or human goodness...” (Perry, pg. 457) It is interesting to follow art through history and see how the general mood of society changed with various aspects of history, and how events have a strong connection to the art of the corresponding time.
Unlike science, art is subjective. The artist leaves behind a part of himself in his work. Therefore, each piece has its own distinct perspective. Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits show her view on her life, on how she has faced so many struggles, yet managed to be a strong person. When we see or hear or read an artistic creation, it produces a mood such as calm or loud, fear or safety. For example, the Eiffel Tower gives Paris a majestic awe; everyone who passes by feels the strength of the 113-year-old grand structure. Art also has a texture. Photographs reveal much through their textures; grainy surfaces often make the picture more realistic while smooth ones seem softer. When we hear a piece of music or see a film, a rhythm carries us from one part to another. Not just true for these two genres, rhythm is present in any artistic work. These few properties are characteristic of everything we encounter in the world of art, the world of human expression. Most have other special features also. Most of the time, though, we do not think about these characteristics because we do not have enough time to pay attention to anything for more than a few seconds.
When visiting an art museum, there could be many thoughts that can run through someone’s mind. One can contemplate the tale that the artist is trying to convey while others can discuss the impact the piece has in term of aesthetics. And people continues to walk around and observing different piece, a thought occurs and questions your logic and reasoning. Why are any of these pieces considered as art? This is not a questioning of the quality of the piece, the mere presence at the measure demonstrates that it is certainly fine art. The question is why is it general called art? Looking past the creative imagery and aesthetic themes, the piece is just ink on paper or shaped clay or any variation on a thing. So is piece of art just a mere thing? As written in the Origin of the Work of Art, Martin Heidegger would state that it’s not a simply put. Live theatre can be described as a live performance performed by actors and actresses on stage in front of a live audience. Live theatre mainly consists of a stage, effects, lights, and props. Live theatre is composed of scenes, which include comedy, tragedy, action, and romance. The costumes, effects, and props increase the entertainment level for the audience. This was my first time experiencing live theatre by taking this class. I would have to say it was very different and it was definitely entertaining for me.

Stage acting is more dramatic than the rest, hence the reason why it is performed on stage. It can also be argued that stage acting is one of the hardest kinds of acting, due to its requirements. The physical requirements for a stage actor tend to be very specific since they are performing in live theatre. These actors must be tall, have large normal features, while being in supreme physical condition. They also need the ability to: control body language, move naturally, and adjust body movement to play different characters. However, with this type of acting, age happens to not be that big of deal because the actors are not seen up close. Since they are not seen up close, stage actors must be able to control their voice and make it expressive....
Art critic Robert Hughes once said, “People inscribe their histories, beliefs, attitudes, desires and dreams in the images they make.” When discussing the mediums of photography and cinema, this belief of Hughes is not very hard to process and understand. Images, whether they be still or moving, can transform their audiences to places they have either never been before or which they long to return to. Images have been transporting audiences for centuries thanks to both the mediums of photography and cinema and together they gone through many changes and developments. When careful consideration is given to these two mediums, it is acceptable to say that they will forever be intertwined, and that they have been interrelated forms of art, communication and entertainment ever since Thomas Edison successfully invented the first Kinetoscope in 1894. Photography itself, as well as the photographical aspects of cinema (cinematography), have influenced our society for decades and have literally shaped the pacing of our lives, changed what we think about and even what we think with.
Conversely, upon investigating the artwork’s factual information such as the painting’s context, the artist’s background, the genre and the school or movement associated with the painting, it is possible to obtain knowledge that combines objective information and subjective opinion, confirming that some degree of objectivity, albeit with our ‘cultural imprint’, is possible as an art observer.
Theatre is a more language driven medium, while movies and television are driven by what you see. Theatre relies solely on excellent script, and acting. Theatre has a live element, a more heightened sense of realism. Some argue that we are losing the very essence of theatre, its live-ness, because of recorded media seeping into plays and performances (Trueman). With technology things can more easily go wrong. Lyn Gardner says that if the show relies too heavily on technology, it can cause performances to be canceled completely due to technical glitches that instead of adding to performances, the technology has become the show.
