A Pulitzer Prize is an award for an achievement in American journalism, literature, or music. Paul Gigot, chairman of the Pulitzer Prize board, described the award as a “proud and robust tradition”. How does one carry on this robust tradition? By mastery of skilled writing technique, one can be considered for the awarding of this prize. Since its creation in 1917, 13 have been awarded annually, one of which, in 1939, was given to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for her novel, The Yearling. Rawlings is an American author from Florida known for writing rural themed novels. Consequently, The Yearling is about a boy living on a farm who adopts an orphaned fawn. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings procured a prestigious Pulitzer Prize for her effectual use of figurative language, sensory details, and syntax.
Poetry conveys emotions and ideas through words and lines. Long Way Down gives the story about a boy named Will, who wants to avenge his brother. He believes that a guy named Riggs killed his brother. He takes his brother’s gun and leaves his family’s apartment on the eighth floor. On the way down the elevator, he is stopped at each floor and a ghost from his past gets on.
In this case however under the circumstances that it was an award for humor there is leeway on how the speech could appropriately be delivered. He did a very good job at keeping the audiences attention throughout the whole speech even using aids such as his wife and other members in the crowd.
Another big part of the delivery was hand gestures and movements. He started by sitting next to a small table during his speech. With social media, it gives the world an anonymous passageway to tear people down and tell them they're not good enough. With all the hate crimes and prejudice concepts, people lose focus on what's truly important. Naomi Shihab Nye portrayed this message through her poem “Shoulders,” which explains that people can't not live in a world without lending a helping hand. People need to help one another and not push people down when they just got up. Without assistance from others, would there really be a human race? “Sestina” by Algernon Charles Swinburne’s is about how quick life goes by and how abruptly death appears. It is, of course, a Sestina which has six stanzas with six lines and ends with three lines. This Sestina has an a and b rhyme scheme, meaning that every other line’s last word rhymes. An example of the a and b rhyme scheme is “day” the last word in the first line and “way” the last word in the third line, or “Night” the last word in the second line and “light” the last of the fourth line.
In the short story, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Charlotte Perkins Gilman writes about her confusing, yet interesting life in isolation, and how she digresses throughout the three months. The narrator is astonished to the fullest extent by many eye-catching objects and hidden details found within the room. Her thoughts about the room are very contradictory and she is thoroughly indecisive in her feelings for this room. Throughout the story, the narrator mentally deteriorates as shown through her tendency to shift from hating the room to obsessing over the room; the author uses strong figurative language and contradictory connotations to reveal the narrator’s thoughts and emotions to the reader.
She used humor occasionally but it wasn't usually relevant to the actual speech. There was no use of visual aids which was fine because it did not really require any. Moving on, she discussed the things that have worked for her like making schedules and being persistent. In doing so, she related it back on how one could use her examples in order to become more efficient. She used many hand gestures which helped us concentrate on her message more effectively.
Both rhetorical devices and figurative language are used to help the writer explains wishes, feelings, and some situations about the writer’s unable reading problem (dyslexia). The writer also asks some questions and compares him with other famous people to support his purpose, and he wants anyone understand a kid who has been living with dyslexia.
