In “The Wife’s Story”, by Ursula LeGuin the author purposely misleads the reader to create a shocking revelation scene, knowing that the reader will most likely overlook the small clues hidden in the text. With the truth coming out and the wife seeing what her husband really is, the wife along with her sister and others take precautions and decide to kill him due to the threat that is presented.
Within in this short story there are many clues that are easily overlooked when trying to figure out the revelation surrounding the husband .For example, when the narrator says, “He didn’t get any game, not even as much as a field mouse” (LeGuin 3). This quote helps readers better understand that the author has given the wolves human characteristics to throw you off. Not to realize that the wife says the husband didn’t even catch a field mouse, which sounds kind of odd considering humans don’t go hunting for field mice.

With this quote the reader can see how instead of the author using the same old lycanthrope archetype. That always explained a human’s body getting hairy and big, she used the opposite to see if the reader would catch on to the wolf turning into a human. Not the human turning into a wolf. But also along with the previous quote also came another that is similar in meaning, “He stood on two legs, my own dear love turned into the hateful one” says the narrator (LeGuin 7). Like the other quote this one also has a clue in it to show the reader that the main characters in this short story are obviously not human the way the wife explained how it (husband) stood

4: what makes Bechdel’s story interesting? What makes Bechdel’s story so fascinating is that she took what would have been an amazing novel and turned it into a comic book. Aside from the author’s lack of celebrity, she created a profound grippy story. Most autobiographies are written by famous people. Bechdal’s creativity as a writer and illustrator led her to capture thousands of satisfying details, with word and images, along with emotional truth and humor to produce this extraordinary first person autobiography herself.
In Janet Lewis’s “The Wife of Martin Guerre”, Bertrande, the protagonist, is a sixteenth century woman who is thrown into a loveless marriage at the age of eleven, at the age of fourteen her mother dies, and once she has finally started developing feelings for this man whom she has been forced to marry, he leaves her in order to save himself from his angry father who he stole seed from. Several years after Martin leaves, Bertrande is introduced to a man who claims to be Martin Guerre, who is really an imposter. While socially and spiritually committed to her husband, she is physically committed and attached to the imposter. The imposter looks remarkably similar to Martin Guerre, but with a much sweeter, more kind disposition. (TEXT EVIDENCE HERE) The imposter is accused, by Bertrande, of not being the real Martin and thus once the real Martin Guerre comes back Bertrande leaves the man she loves and asks for forgiveness of the man who left her. At no point does Bertrande truly question any of it, it is the way customs work and she accepts this. She is a victim of her upbringing, a victim of circumstance, and a victim of social customs

In the last half of the nineteenth century, Victorian ideals still held sway in American society, at least among members of the middle and upper classes. Thus the cult of True Womanhood was still promoted which preached four cardinal virtues for women: piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. Women were considered far more religious than men and, therefore, they had to be pure in heart, mind, and, of course, body, not engaging in sex until marriage, and even then not finding any pleasure in it. They were also supposed to be passive responders to men's decisions, actions, and needs. The true woman's place was her home; "females were uniquely suited to raise children, care for the needs of their menfolk, and devote their lives to creating a nurturing home environment." (Norton, 108). However, the tensions between old and new, traditional and untraditional, were great during the last years of nineteenth century and there was a debate among male and female writers and social thinkers as to what the role of women should be. Among the female writers who devoted their work to defying their views about the woman's place in society were Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin.
First, the werewolf’s earliest appearance in human form as “a dashing huntsmen,” extends the symbolism to warn the reader that baseness is not always synonymous with being covered in lice, but can be clothed in a disguise similar to what France suggests of the wife in The Lay of the Werewolf (Carter 217). Yet, it seems that even when the boy in Carter’s story does transform, he is still, in essence, as much human as he is beast. Also, the description of him as a naked werewolf reveals, quite obviously, the sexual undertone, of asserting dominance over women, much like those that caused fear in the wife in The Lay of the Werewolf. The Wife of His Youth is a short story written by Charles Chestnut that highlights the difficulties experienced by the mulattos (people of mixed white and black races) during the 1890’s. One of the biggest difficulties experienced by the protagonist, Mr. Ryder, was deciding which race to closer associate with when it came time for him to select a spouse. Because Mr. Ryder was a mulatto, choosing to marry a darker woman would emphasize his darker qualities and choosing a whiter woman would emphasize his whiter features. In the beginning of the story, the wife is a mouse. She is doubtful about their relationship and worries that Bisclavret doesn’t love her. When she finds out that he is a werewolf, she becomes a tiger, betraying him and leaving him for someone else. She tries to figure out “how she might get rid of him” (101), so she goes for his weakness; she hides his clothes so that he may never be able to transform back into a human, and “Bisclavret is betrayed, ruined by his own wife” (125-126). This shows how “if love and proper relationship both be destroyed then husband and wife are divided”. The wife’s mistrust and betrayal of her husband causes their love for each other to falter, thus ruining their relationship. Bisclavret is subject to living in the woods on his own with the fear of being hunted or killed, and his wife is with some other man. They are divided, and eventually brought together again by fate, but at that point, Bisclavret has turned into a weak monstrosity. After a year of living in the woods, the king finds him and takes him in. He holds a court and his wife, as well as her new husband, are there and Bisclavret, seeking revenge, attacks her. In her essay, Woman in the Nineteenth Century, Margaret Fuller discusses the state of marriage in America during the 1800‘s. She is a victim of her own knowledge, and is literally considered ugly because of her wisdom. She feels that if certain stereotypes can be broken down, women can have the respect of men intellectually, physically, and emotionally. She explains why some of the inequalities exist in marriages around her. Fuller feels that once women are accepted as equals, men and women will be able achieve a true love not yet known to the people of the world.
Rape Fantasies by Margaret Atwood "Rape Fantasies" was written by Margaret Atwood in 1977. Basically, this short story is about the narrator, named Estelle, recalling a conversation between several women during their lunch hour. It starts with one of Estelle's co-workers, asking the question 'How about it, girls, do you have rape fantasies? ' (pg 72) The story goes on with each woman telling their supposed 'rape fantasy' to one another.
The husband is able to provide for his family with a position in an office, logically his intellect is not in question; his emotional stability has defiantly been affected. Therefore, this brings the author to rely on the husband’s perspective to divulge the fundamental components of the story using a third-person narration. For a year the husband thought that his wife had been kidnapped, yet he never checked her person effects to see if anything was missing. Only because the mother needed additional spices did the husband check for the jewelry that he advised that the wife stash in the top cabinet in case there was an intruder (1995, p. 587). Once the missing jeweler was discovered the husband knew that the wife then abandoned not only him, but also their the young son.
In Sophie's World, Jostein Gaarder teaches philosophy and it explains basic philosophical ideas better than any other reading book or textbook that I have ever read. The many philosophical lessons of the diversified thinkers of their own time were dexterously understood. The author has a wonderful knack for finding the heart of a concept and placing it on display. For example, he metamorphoses Democritus' atoms into Lego bricks and in a stroke makes the classical conception of the atom dexterously attainable. He relates all the abstract concepts about the world and what is real with straightforward everyday things that everyone can relate to which makes this whole philosophy course manageable. ''The best way of approaching philosophy is to ask a few philosophical questions: How was the world created? Is there any will or meaning behind what happens? Is there a life after death? How can we answer these questions? And most important, how ought we to live?'' (Gaarder, Jostein 15).
Throughout the story the author leaves little hints throughout the text that the husband in the story is a wolf and not a person. Example number one is “he was just larking along” (1 Guin). It uses the word larking which is to do something in a playful manner.
