Racism makes up most of the story and is the main obstacle for Melba. Racism still goes on today and 10th graders need to learn the history of it so they can grow up knowing what problems can come from racism. They need to grasp the idea of how racism can ruin lives and how it divides communities.In the memoir, a man attempted to rape Melba and this type of assault happened regularly in the 1960s. This happened because if a disagreement ensued, it would usually go the white person's way. Grandma India tells Melba to “pray for that evil white man, pray every day for 21 days, asking God to forgive him and to teach him right“. grandma India tells Melba to pray all throughout the book when she struggles with the people who do unforgivable things
to her. As a result of racism, hundreds of people were protesting and roared with dissent. When Melba reflects on that day, she says “it took a moment to realize that it was the site of us.“ The angry mob surprised Melba because she realized that the crowd was angry because of her. The crowd harasses Melba mainly for the reason that they don’t want black students to integrate with the white students. Tenth graders today need to understand how the communities in America of Melba’s time suffered harsh racism and how they can be better than the past. Melba’s mom was forced to lose her job because of the severe racism. She says “they say they’ll give me back my job only if I withdraw Melba from Central high school immediately“ and has to stop working so her daughter can go to school. In the past, extreme forms of racism were normal and kids today need to understand the history of Americas mistakes. Through Melba, kids today can notice how difficult her life became as a result of racism and social injustice.
During the 1950s, African Americans struggled against racial segregation, trying to break down the race barrier. Fifteen year old Melba Patillo Beals was an ordinary girl, until she’s chosen with eight other students to integrate Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. They are named the Little Rock and fight through the school year, while students and segregationists are threatening and harassing them. Warriors Don’t Cry—a memoir of Beals’ personal experience—should be taught in schools because it teaches students to treat each other equally and to be brave, while it also shows the struggle of being an African-American in the 1950s. Another lesson taught in the retelling is that everyone can make a change.
In the book Warriors Don't Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals, the author describes what her reactions and feelings are to the racial hatred and discrimination she and eight other African-American teenagers received in Little Rock, Arkansas during the desegregation period in 1957. She tells the story of the nine students from the time she turned sixteen years old and began keeping a diary until her final days at Central High School in Little Rock. The story begins by Melba talking about the anger, hatred, and sadness that is brought up upon her first return to Central High for a reunion with her eight other classmates. As she walks through the halls and rooms of the old school, she recalls the horrible acts of violence that were committed by the white students against her and her friends.
In the book Warriors Don’t Cry Melba wanted to integrate schools because she knew that if they did step up things would begin to change and white people would begin to accept black people as equals. Yes, there are things that were done to Melba and the rest of the kids that could be considered abuse but everyone involved knew it was for the greater good. Melba even makes it known she wants to be there from this quote, “This is going to work. It will take a lot more patience and more strength from me, but it’s going to work. It takes more time than I thought. But we’re going to have integration in Little Rock. (pg.161)” We can see that Melba wants to do whatever she can to get into Central High School and is willing to go the extra mile. Frankly if Melba didn’t stick it out racism might have gone on longer than expected. Melba even reflects on this, “But Grandma is right, if I don’t go back, they will think they have won. They will think they can use soldiers to frighten us, and we’ll always have to obey them. As Beals' journey begins so do the warrior references, even before Melba herself is capable of realizing it. As Melba fights for her survival in only her first week of life, she is already being sung "On the Battlefield for My Lord" by her grandmother (Beals, 5). This foreshadows the impending war she will go on to fight as well as instilling her personal, family and religious values in the reader's mind. Beals, born on a day of war - the day Pearl Harbor was attacked, grows up in a world where she is taught to be strong, yet allow herself to be pushed down by whites. "As a toddler, growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1945, I felt safe only in my sepia-toned world, a cocoon of familiar people and places. I knew that there were white people living somewhere far away and we didn't do things together. My folks never explained why I should be frightened of those white people." Although the main character in the book was white, the author, Sue Kidd, does a great job of depicting the African American culture during the time. Whether it was Rosaleen getting beat up in jail, or Zach dreaming of being a lawyer, this book showed you what it was like being a minority during a time when rights where still being fought for. One of the smaller conflicts in the story was a man verses man conflict, when Lily and Zach started to like each other. Though they knew that a colored man, and a white girl could never be together, they both were attracted to each other. Were they not from different cultures, people would have been fine with them dating, but because Zach was black, it couldn?t work out.

Melba began her story with her childhood in Little Rock, Arkansas. She lived with her mother, grandma, and brother in a strict and religious household. Her family had come to accept the fact that they would always be mistreated because of their color. In the South this mistreatment of blacks was seen as perfectly normal, but Melba saw things a little differently. As a young girl, she experienced first hand how awful it was to be segregated against and be constantly ridiculed simply because of her color. Unlike most people, though, she wanted to do something about it and prayed for an opportunity that would allow her to fight back and hopefully make a difference.
Those two events may seem like nothing but it shows how even at the early age of 8, children are taught to spot the differences in race instead of judging people by their character. Directing after this Twyla mentions how her and Roberta “looked like salt and pepper standing there and that’s what the other kids called us sometimes” (202). On the first page of this short story we already have 3 example of race dictating how the characters think and act. With the third one which mentions salt which is white and pepper which is black we understand that one girl is white and one girl is black. The brilliance of this story is that we never get a clear cut answer on which girl is which. Toni Morrison gives us clues and hints but never comes out and says it. This leaves it up to us to figure it out for ourselves. The next example of how race influences our characters is very telling. When Twyla’s mother and Roberta’s mother meeting we see not only race influencing the characters but, how the parents can pass it down to the next generation. This takes places when the mothers come to the orphanage for chapel and Twyla describes to the reader Roberta’s mother being “bigger than any man
... situation you have to do what is right to you. Nobody should tell you what to do and how to do it. You have to stand up for what you believe in like Atticus did with the court case. He fought for everyone and never judged by race, color, or ethnicity. This story helps students see how life was back then and how discriminating people is not correct. The author really teaches the importance of how people should treat each other and how people can easily get hurt. Racism and segregation is a big thing and it needs to get changed. People need to stop judging and start seeing people for who they are. It is not right to do wrong in life, you have to stand strong, and start making a change in racism and separation. Students will see when reading this book the inspiration that flows out of it. To Kill a Mockingbird is the most influential book students will ever read.

With all three of these aspects of racism in consideration, race was a prevalent theme in the book that couldn’t escape the reader’s consciousness. Whether it was through showing the division of the communities, or through the feelings that each race held about the other race, the book portrays the history of racism in America.
Her realization that she is not alone in her oppression brings her a sense of freedom. It validates her emerging thoughts of wanting to rise up and shine a light on injustice. Her worries about not wanting to grow up because of the harsh life that awaits her is a common thought among others besides the people in her community. As she makes friends with other Indians in other communities she realizes the common bonds they share, even down to the most basic such as what they eat, which comforts her and allows her to empathize with them.

These kids are the perfect instrument for getting her message across and demonstrate to the reader that if they can look past the skin color then adults can too and maybe they will see the similarities between whites and blacks. This book has been one of my favorites of my high school career because of the likeable characters and powerful message.
One of the main issues in the story was that using a bathroom that a black person used was not healthy for whites. In the book, it was a fact that you could catch a disease if you did. It really symbolizes what is wrong with the white community in Mississippi in the 60’s. A man was beaten for accidentally using a white bathroom. Little Mae Mobley gets spanking for using Aibeleen's bathroom.
The life changing experience Melba faced was being the first African American to attend an all white school. In paragraph eighteen Melba says “we stepped up the front door of Central high school and crossed the threshold into that place where angry segregation mobs had forbidden us to go.” This explains that Melba face a life changing experiences. These events challenges Meals to be brave and confident by standing up for her country and for her education. In paragraph thirteen Melba states “while others raise their fists to us others shouted ugly words.” This is how that no matter how crazy and harsh things got she didn’t stop. All of these events caused her to grow and develop. She grew to be one of the first pioneer to integrate an all white school in Little Rock, Arkansas. In paragraph sixteen Melba states “I felt proud” she was proud because all of these people went this far to bring justice. How Melba responded to these events is by staying strong and not backing down. How melbas actions impacted her country is the schools now have integrated so all raices can go to the same school. For example in paragraph eighteen Beals states “as they walk up the to the school” That piece of text explains that they are slowly but surely changing segregation. All of these events and challenges changed Melba and her country's way of life in
