The West Fertilizer Plant Explosion
On April 17, 2013, the community of West, Texas, suffered a devastating and heartbreaking event in the evening hours. After a fire broke out inside the West Fertilizer plant, a massive explosion leveled the facility, caused millions of dollars in damage to surrounding buildings, and took the lives of over a dozen people. Sadly, the majority of those killed were volunteer firefighters who had responded to the fire and were unable to retreat to a safe distance before the explosion. Nearly 200 injuries were also reported to have been treated at local hospitals (Wood, 2013). The explosion was said to be caused by the combination of the fire and large stores of ammonium nitrate fertilizer at the plant.
This catastrophic event received immediate coverage from news agencies and journalists across the country. Multiple local, state, and federal Agencies responded to the scene as first responders and post event investigators. The 6th Civil Support Team of the Texas Army National Guard was sent to the scene the following day to assist (Hoffman, 2013). The United States Geological Survey reported that the blast registered the same as a 2.1 magnitude earthquake. It was said to have destroyed 140 homes and several other buildings to include a middle school and a retirement home (Hemenway, 2013b). Investigators said that the blast had left a crater measuring nearly ten feet deep and as much as 100 feet wide. President Obama issued a statement the day after:
Today our prayers go out to the people of West, Texas, in the aftermath of last night’s deadly explosion at a fertilizer plant. A tight-knit community has been shaken, and good, hard-working people have lost their lives. I want to thank th...

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire not only affected the city of New York, but also the rest of the country. It forever changed the way our country would look at safety regulations in factories and buildings. The fire proved to America what can and will happen if we over-look safety regulations and over-crowd buildings. Unfortunately, 146 lives are taken before we fully understand this concept.
One of the deadliest nightclub fires in United States history occurred on May 28, 1977, a busy Memorial Day weekend in the suburbs of Cincinnati. The Beverly Hills Supper Club was a popular nightclub located in Southgate, Campbell County, Kentucky in the greater Cincinnati area. It was located on a hill less than 1000 ft. from the highway on seventeen acres of land just three miles from downtown Cincinnati (Beverly Hills Supper Club Fire D-1). It has since become a case study for its numerous code violations and the behavior of the fire from ignition to building collapse. While there is no one contributing factor to the significant loss of life at this facility, a study of the building’s history, the sequence of the fire’s progression, and an analysis of the fire’s chemistry can provide some valuable lessons to the future firefighter.
A time to remember those who died, those who served, and those who carry on.” Unknown. During 9/11, the Manhattan firefighters were responding to a gas leak when they heard the explosion from one of the twin towers. Policemen and firefighters from all around New York and surrounding areas came to help rescue the victims.
The trauma of July 7, 2016 has forever impacted the lives of many North Texans like myself. Had that been a school night, I could have easily been nursing a bullet wound or lying in a casket today. The most
On 26 February 1993 at 12:17, a yellow RYDER van detonated on level B-2 of the World Trade Center North tower. What was first believed to be a below grade transformer explosion turned into an extensive test of New York Cities Incident Command capabilities. Everyone involved had an intricate part in handling this situation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was able to get all support assets there promptly to assist in rescue operations. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discovered information on the vehicle used. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) used all of the intelligence gathered to apprehend and convict those responsible. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducted cleanup of chemical and biological hazards that were left behind from the blast. Numerous agencies worked together to solve the first terrorist attack on American soil and clean up a disaster of epic proportions.
On the afternoon of March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in the 10-floor Asch Building, a block east of Manhattan's Washington Square. This is where 500 mostly young immigrant girls were producing shirts for the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Within minutes, it spread to consume the building's upper three stories. Firemen at the scene were unable to rescue those trapped inside: their ladders weren't tall enough. Exits were locked, and the narrow fire escapes were inadequate. Panicked, many jumped from the windows to their deaths. People on the street watched in horror. The flames were under control in less than a half hour, but 146 people perished, 123 of them women. It was the worst disaster in the city's history.

Hazards pose risk to everyone. Our acceptance of the risks associated with hazards dictates where and how we live. As humans, we accept a certain amount of risk when choosing to live our daily lives. From time to time, a hazard becomes an emergent situation. Tornadoes in the Midwest, hurricanes along the Gulf Coast or earthquakes in California are all hazards that residents in those regions accept and live with. This paper will examine one hazard that caused a disaster requiring a response from emergency management personnel. Specifically, the hazard more closely examined here is an earthquake. With the recent twenty year anniversary covered by many media outlets, the January 17, 1994, Northridge, California earthquake to date is the most expensive earthquake in American history.
Killing 168 people and injuring more than 680, the attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Downtown Oklahoma would remain the biggest act of terrorism before September 11, 2001. The truck bomb explosion took place on April 19, 1995 at 9:02 a.m. Memorials are set up for the lives taken that day, including a field of empty chairs.
“Nearly 100,000 food packs have beens sent to the quake zones.” (Doc C) People in other countries are donating food to the Red Cross and the IFRC for the quake zones. Another quote from document C is, “Some people wrote “help us” signs on the highway in big bold letters so helicopters could spot them from above and direct aid.” People are really desperately in need of help. The Mayor says that people all around the world are helping them rebuild all because they reached out to other people.
The explosion covered about 15 square blocks with three bombing victims dying on scene and around 264 people seriously injured. The gory crime scene was filled with injured runners and spectators who had lost limbs, contained abrasions, or received traumatic brain injuries caused by the shrapnel from the bomb. Soon after the explosions, first responders transformed the regular medical tent set for runners into an
On the night of February 20th 2003, 80’s rock and roll band Great White was performing a concert at The Station, a night club located in West Warwick, Rhode Island. During the beginning moments of their show, their manager who was operating the pyrotechnics set off a round of fireworks. This round of pyrotechnics ignited the acoustic foam of the night club and started a blaze that engulfed the club in less than 6 minutes. The night club had a building permit capacity for 200 people. At the time of the fire the club was more than double the permit limit at over 440 people inside viewing the show. Minutes after the flames engulfed the night club billowing smoke hindered escape, this caused a panic as concert goers started running toward the front exit, even though the club had 3 other exits, everyone was focused on the front exit. That many people focused on one exit resulted in a biomass that created a traffic jam and many of the victims died in or near the front hallway or were crushed as everyone tried to escape. All totaled 100 people died and 230 were injured. The injuries varied but included smoke inhalation, burns and injuries from being trampled.
I would like to address the tragic event that happened in New York City. Last week on March 14 there was a shooting at the 24 Hour Fitness, in New York City, killing 10 innocent people. I would like to apologize to the families and friends of these innocent people that were killed and I guarantee to you all that these people will be missed for sure. I know it’s hard to tell how some of you are coping with this horrible situation, but I, on some level know how you all are feeling because my brother, Benjamin, someone who I looked up to for many years was killed in the shooting. Even though it has been a week already we sadly haven’t figured out who the perpetrator is. We are all doing our best to try to find this criminal, but for now all we
On Thursday, September 7th, Mexico was hit with an 8.1 magnitude earthquake and experienced rough weather from Hurricane Katia. The Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto said it was the strongest earthquake to hit Mexico in 100 years. Over 60 people were killed, and around 50 million people felt it. Some of the most tremendous earthquakes are capable of producing tsunamis, which is exactly what happened. The earthquake led to a tsunami with waves that up to a meter/3 feet high that lasted more than 6 hours. The general manage of the Mexican Direct Relief said that it is difficult to bring relief resources and supplied to the people who were hit the hardest because of Hurricane Katia.
On July 25th my family and I met at Faith Community Church around five in the morning. The big day had finally come. The day we were going to help the citizens of Ferguson, Missouri through the nonprofit organization Convoy of Hope. The city of Ferguson that was known for protesting was given a chance of hope that day. There was a total of forty churches and one-thousand volunteers in the St. Louis area that came to the event to help supply food, clothing, and haircuts for the citizens. In addition, with the help of many charities and donations, the city was also given over thirty-five thousand pounds of food. That day my church group and I were on a mission to make peace, and bring exhilaration to the community.
