In “The Weekend,” George cheats on Lenore with Sarah, and she still chooses to stay with him and work out their issues. The story by Ann Beattie can relate to “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin because Edna cheats on Leonce with Robert and Alcee Arobin. After learning Edna cheats on him, Leonce decides to stay with Edna to work their relationship out. While nothing is wrong with their significant others, they cheat because something in them is unfulfilled. Lenore knows George cheats because he spends much of his time with the other women, but she never acknowledges it, until she talks with Julie one day; “she’s really the best friend I’ve ever had. We understand things—we don’t always have to talk about them. ‘Like her relationship with George,’
Erin George’s A Woman Doing Life: Notes from a Prison for Women sheds light on her life at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women (FCCW) where she was sentenced for the rest of her life for first-degree murder. It is one of the few books that take the reader on a journey of a lifer, from the day of sentencing to the day of hoping to being bunked adjacent to her best friend in the geriatric ward.
“Watch your tone young lady” a phrase known all too well to the American culture, whether it be from mom giving her children a lecture or on a television screen being spoken out by an actor. The tone of voice that one uses while speaking plays an extremely significant role in what the spoken words actually mean. Many times one can say one thing and mean another just from placing emphasis on a particular word. With tone of voice plays such a vital role in the meaning of a sentence it becomes clear that poetry, although often times found in books as written work, is meant to be read aloud; this was not all that clear to me until I attended my very first poetry reading. On November 10th Ramapo College welcomed the marvelous poet Mark Doty to its campus. Through Mark Doty’s reading of “House of Beauty” and “Theory of Marriage” it became clear that the use of emphasis and tone are vital characteristics that allows for the poet to challenge poetic traditions and conventions.
“Sunday in the Park” by Bel Kaufman, is a short story that illustrates the contrast and conflict of human behavior through a typical family's encounter with a barbaric man. Contrast is emphasized by conflicting pairs of opposing behaviors: civility, rationality, and harmony against barbaric, instinct, and turmoil. The author continuously develops a positive atmosphere, promptly to shatter the image. Through the story, Kaufman implies that humans conflict between their two sides of contrast, either it is the viewer, between characters, or within oneself.
She clearly proves this when she was walking home and when she finally arrived, she was tired but when she went to rest, her older sister Nooria told her to get water. Since she was tired she argued back but finally agrees, “Parvana groaned. If the tank was almost empty, she’d have to take 5 trips to the water tap. Six because mother hated to see an empty water bucket. ‘If you fetched it yesterday, when mother asks you, you wouldn’t have so much to haul.’ nooria said as parvana passer by her to get to her water bucket.
In the short story "weekend" by Ann Beattie, there is one main central conflict between the main characters of Lenore and George. This conflict arises from that fact that George and Lenore have a child together, live in the same house, yet they have no apparent relationship. George is always bringing back women to the house in front of Lenore and she hides how it hurts her deep down. George’s character is portrayed as an alcoholic older man who does not seem to care too much about anything that is going on around him. While Lenore is shown to be a “simple” woman who just lets George walk all over her by showing up with younger girls and who rarely shows emotion. Although Lenore is not as simple as she leads on to George, she has a lot of emotion buried inside of her that she does not always show, and her character is a lot more complex after a second glance.
In the story “Every Little Hurricane” the author Sherman Alexie introduces the main character of a 9 year- old boy named Victor. Alexie inaugurates a cultural environment of Native Americans whom play role during 1976. The setting in the story takes place in a Spokane Indian Reservation village where Victor’s parents are hosting a New Year’s Eve family reunion. Throughout the story the author evaluates stories of Victor’s life in a metaphoric view contrasting the hurricane to express lived moments of his childhood. The author uses many forms of figurative language to abstract the readers in a critical thinking position. Towards the end the reader finds out there is no kind of hurricane in the story but metaphorically used to analyze the effects
Poets use many literary devices to extend the meaning of poetry they are writing. It not only extends the meaning, but also gives a better overall feeling of how the poem should be interpreted. One example of literary devices is the use of imagery. Imagery is a collective sense of images given throughout the meaning of the poem itself. A great poem that shows the use of imagery is the poem by Elizabeth Bishop, Filling Station.
"Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield is a story of an older woman caught in an illusion, created by herself. The illusion she carries with her is that of loneliness and a false link to reality. Miss Brill soon began creating her life, but in drifting farther away from society. This life she has created soon causes Miss Brill a major upset. Miss Brill isolated herself, created a new world around her, and allowed herself to succumb to the thoughts of others.
After reading Mike Adams article The Dead Grandmother/Exam Syndrome I was very amused by Adams sense of sarcasm while making the article perfectly humorous. The thesis of Adams article is “A student’s grandmother is far more likely to die suddenly just before the student takes an exam,
The poem was part of a Sandra Cisneros’s book called, My Wicked Wicked Ways, collection of poems that has the themes of Chicanas’ sexuality, culture, and history. It is a narrative because it paints a picture in my head even though it has a few words. For All Tuesday Travelers is an empowerment poem because it tells a story of a woman acting against the traditional role of being woman by using allegory, mood, and alliteration.
Very few novels occur over a single day, with the notable exceptions of Ulysses by James Joyce, and Ian McEwan’s Saturday. When using this as a device, every detail of the story must serve a specific purpose, thematically or otherwise. An example might include using a character or event to represent a recurring theme. McEwan, in particular, enjoys exploring how the public affects the personal, as seen in his article “Beyond Belief”. Throughout, he constantly refers to his personal reaction; sitting “hungrily, ghoulishly” in front of the television “in a state of sickened wonderment” (“Beyond Belief”). In his novel Saturday, McEwan uses the squash game to highlight Henry’s aggressive nature, to demonstrate how public events influence our private
Elaine Potter Richardson was raised by her mother and her stepfather while living in a Caribbean island with much poverty. Her mother sent her to live in the United States at the age of seventeen, which left her with no other choice other than to provide for herself. After she briefly attended college in New Hampshire, she moved to New York and began to work for the New Yorker. There, she met Allen Shawn. They married in 1979 which later ended in a divorce. She began to write personal stories in connection with her mother, her father, and her youngest brother who died of AIDS. In the second story the author’s name is Katherine O’Flaherty, born in St. Louis, Missouri. Unlike Elaine, Katherine’s family preferred to live higher than usual in
In the novel The Lost Weekend, the author, Charles Jackson uses alcohol to display that the main character Don Birnam is a homosexual. The reader gets to spend six days with Birnam as he drunkenly reminisces on his past, present, and future. Although Charles Jackson does not indicate that Birnam is a homosexual, the details given suggests that Birnam is a homosexual alcoholic who spends most of the novel in gay bars.
I will always remember that zero that my old English teacher, Ms. Moreno, gave me and the laughs of my classmates at me.
There is a complex connection between marriage and physical health. Whether you are happily married or not, there will be a positive or negative effect of the marriage. Doris Lessing’s “To Room Nineteen” presents the idea of modern day marriage from a feminine perspective as not just "a failure in intelligence" (p. 251 Women in Fiction) but also a form of bondage from which one must escape at all costs. Marriage seems as the metric by which the dominant cultural beliefs measures their standards.
