The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell
In the story of "The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell," we are introduced to a rather interesting character, Dame Ragnell. We meet Dame Ragnell in the beginning of the story when King Arthur is riding his horse into Ingelswood Forest. He then meets a lady, Dame Ragnell, who is described to be absolutely hideous and grotesque. The story gives a complete description of this old, foul woman:
Her face was red, her nose snotid withalle,
Her mouithe wide, her teethe yallowe overe alle,
With blerid eyen gretter then a balle;
Her mouithe was not to lak;
Her teeth hing over her lippes;
Her cheekis as wemen hippes.
Dame Ragnell is a repulsive creature. She's described as a big, broad-shouldered woman with yellow, rotten teeth hanging over her mouth, great big eyes, and a big red face with cheeks the size of a lady's hips.
King Arthur runs in trouble and is given twelve months to find the answer to the question, "What do women most desire?" With his life riding on this answer, King Arthur desperately asks Dame Ragnell to tell him what women most desire. She tells him that women most desire power and sovereignty in marriage. But she tells him this only after he promises that one of his knights, Sir Gawain, will wed her. Sir Gawain does indeed marry her, but only because of his strong loyalty to his king. Sir Gawain is disgusted by her appearance, but he knows this is the only way to save King Arthur. People pity Sir Gawain, a very handsome man who possesses nobility and honor, for having to marry such a loathly woman.
Dame Ragnell has no manners, especially at the dinner table. When she feasts at King Arthur's court, she eats as much food as six grown men:
Her nailes were long inchis three;
Therewithe she breke her mete ungoodly;
Dame Ragnell's appearance is the result of her stepmother's wicked spell. Her stepmother cursed Dame Ragnell many years ago and the spell can only be broken if she weds a man who gives her sovereignty in their marriage. The spell has yet to be broken…that is until she is married to Sir Gawain. Then, she gives Sir Gawain the ultimatum that he can either choose for Dame Ragnell to be beautiful during the day for all men to admire, and at night she will be ugly for Sir Gawain, or for her to be ugly during the day and beautiful at night for Sir Gawain to enjoy.
He demonstrates goodness at the hand of the Green Knight. He shows courage by accepting what is to come upon him during his voyage. His journey to find the Green Knight is filled with temptations. In the conversation with him and the “Lady”, Sir Gawain showed a Chivalrous code by keeping his loyalty to the king by not kissing his wife. The lady states “if I should exchange at my choice and choose me a husband for the noble I know….would I elect before you”.
‘'The real hero is always a hero by mistake; he dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else.'' (Eco). Some heroes wished that they might not be a hero, or some do, but don't know who, where, and when and why if/are heroes. The similarities between Sir Gawain and Westley are that they started their journey but got a little help on the way, they both start the journey by accepting that they have to go, they both know that they might end up dying but to go anywhere. The most superior is Westley because he had more help than Sir Gawain, Westley had two other people who tried to kill him but, Westley defended them and then they saved him and Westley help Inigo revenge his father's death from the six fingered man while saving the princess.
Morgan, Gerald. "Medieval misogyny and Gawain's outburst against women in 'Sir Gawain and the green Knight'." The Modern Language Review 97.2 (2002): 265+. Literature Resource Center. Web. 28 Jan. 2014.
The story of Dame Ragnell and "The Wife of Bath's Tale" are works that are very similar yet have differences that set the two apart. The most obvious comparison between the two works is the dilemma faced in each. In both stories a man's life is at stake and all he has to do to be spared is to answer one question. That question has to do with what women really want. Another similarity involves the outcome of each story. The differences between the two stories are revealed in the plots. The differences that stand out the most are the circumstances leading up to the question being asked and the attitude of the person that has to marry the old hag to get the answer to the question. There are many small differences between the stories but they are not as important as the two mentioned.
When Arthur's court was challenged by the Green Knight, Gawain alone offered to take the cup from Arthur's hands. He showed pride and courage greater than all - by coming forward. The poem is filled with opportunities in which Gawain inevitably was forced to face difficult decisions. During his travels he had every opportunity to turn around, especially when the rain and cold and desolation became fierce. Gawain, however, continued on his way. Three times did the lady tempt him and twice he managed to neither offend her with discourteousness nor accept her amorous advances and defile his chastity.
In today society, beauty in a woman seems to be the measured of her size, or the structure of her nose and lips. Plastic surgery has become a popular procedure for people, mostly for women, to fit in social class, race, or beauty. Most women are insecure about their body or face, wondering if they are perfect enough for the society to call the beautiful; this is when cosmetic surgery comes in. To fix what “needed” to be fixed. To begin with, there is no point in cutting your face or your body to add or remove something most people call ugly. “The Pitfalls of Plastic Surgery” explored the desire of human to become beyond perfection by the undergoing plastic surgery. The author, Camille Pagalia, took a look how now days how Americans are so obsessed
Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is an example of medieval misogyny. Throughout Medieval literature, specifically Arthurian legends like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the female characters, Guinevere, the Lady, and Morgan leFay are not portrayed as individuals but social constructs of what a woman should be. Guinevere plays a passive woman, a mere token of Arthur. The Lady is also a tool, but has an added role of temptress and adulteress. Morgan leFay is the ultimate conniving, manipulating, woman. While the three women in this legend have a much more active role than in earlier texts, this role is not a positive one; they are not individuals but are symbols of how men of this time perceive women as passive tokens, adulteresses, and manipulators.
The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight revolves around the knights and their chivalry as well as their romance through courtly love. The era in which this story takes place is male-dominated, where the men are supposed to be brave and honorable. On the other hand, the knight is also to court a lady and to follow her commands. Sir Gawain comes to conflict when he finds himself needing to balance the two by being honorable to chivalry as well as respectful to courtly love.
Illegal immigration has helped in the nation’s economic growth by enabling businesses to prosper as the illegal immigrants have provided cheap labor and long hours of hard work. Businesses benefit from illegal immigration by saving a large amount of money since they are not providing insurance both medical and retirement plans for their illegal workers. This results in a lower production cost for the companies and lower prices of goods and services for everyone. Although illegal immigrants may not contribute directly to the economy of the nation in the aspect of paying taxes like income tax, they contribute to the economy in the form of sales taxes by purchasing the supplies they need in the same way a native citizens or legal immigrants do in order to survive and live comfortably.
...ob security, and pay sufficiently low. They include, picking fruit and vegetables, cleaning houses, hotels and offices, and farming and construction labor. These jobs are not preferred by many working Americans, but they are certainly necessities in society. Illegal immigrants have no other option but to agree to do these jobs for the little money they get. Therefore, they play a vital role in carrying out these jobs.
Study after study fails to find evidence that immigrants harm American workers. A recent National Bureau of Economic Research study by Ottaviano and Peri finds that the influx of foreign workers between 1990 and 2004 raised the average wage of U.S.-born workers by 2 percent. Nine in ten American workers gained; only one in ten, high school dropouts, lost slightly, by 1 percent (Dangelo 236). Recent studies found that immigrants are a net economic gain for the nation in times of economic boom as well as in recession. Despite national gains, immigration may be an economic burden or create unw...
Those who support immigrants being protected by the law believe that immigrants help the economy by creating lower wages which enables companies to make better profits. According to Becky Akers and Donald J. Boudreaux, immigrants “should be allowed to contribute to the United States economy in the Constitutional and legal precepts that guarantee all immigrants the opportunity to pursue life, liberty, and happiness in the United States” (22). If immigrants were not here in the United States, the jobs they do might not even get done by anyone else (Isidore 103). Immigrants fill up the jobs that many Americans do not want. “Specialization deepens. Workers’ productivity soars, forcing employers to compete for their time by offering higher pay” (Akers and Boudreaux 25). As researcher Ethan Lewis said, “Economics professor, Patricia Cortes, studied the way immigrants impact prices in 25 large United States metropolitan areas. She discovered that a 10-percent increase in immigration lowered the price...
Most are working in agriculture creating the produce which we purchase and there is always a need for people in this field, and not many people even want these jobs. The jobs that the immigrants are taking are jobs like working on farms and these jobs have even been offered to Americans who are unemployed and only 3% of the people accepted (Baragona). One researcher states, “From the perspective of National Milk Producers Federation in 2009, retail milk prices would increase by 61 percent if its immigrant labor force were to be eliminated” (Goodman). Just one example of how the economy would start to go down, keeping in mind of all of the other produce that these people are creating.Without these undocumented immigrants working we would not have enough people working in this field. The people who are coming to work in the United States to make a better life for themselves are people who should be welcomed, people like Jose Antonio. Antonio became very successful along with many struggles getting to where he is. Rory O’Connor wrote about how he is an American hero and states, “He, and millions like him, have much to contribute to America- and without people like them, our country will be
Contrary to popular opinion, illegal immigrants do not contribute to the U.S. economy. Instead they cost more by using government provided services, taking jobs from native workers, and reducing wages by competition with native workers. Proudly a nation of immigrants the United States attracts people from all over the world because we are a nation of laws. (Demint) For centuries immigration has been indispensable to the health of our nation, as it will be for our nation’s future success. (Demint) Although this is true, immigrants should still come to our nation lawfully and not burden our nations loyal and already overburdened taxpayers more with fiscal costs. (Demint) Foreign born people residing in the United States at the time of a population survey who were not U.S. citizens at birth in 2012 were reported to be 4.2% born in Africa, 29.2% born in Asia, 11.8% born in Europe, 52.2% born in Latin America including South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, 2.0% born in Northern America including Canada, Bermuda, Greenland, St. Pierre, and Miquelon. (Migration) The top three countries from which illegal immigrants were reported to have been originally born in are Mexico, India, and China. (Migration) With illegal immigration becoming more common by the years you can only imagine how much those numbers have increased. Having illegal immigrants in the U.S. and how to deal with the productive and government fee-conflicting immigrants can cause much controversy on whether they hurt or help our economy. Pardoning the offense against our government to those who break the law and putting them on a path to become citizens of our law-based nation would be unfair; also it would just impose more unacceptable behavior and major...
Illegal immigration has been a big problem in the United States and the number of immigrants keeps on increasing. Many Americans have mixed feelings on this debatable issue. Some think that Illegal Immigration benefits the economy while many others believe that they are more of a burden than a help. According to the Illegal Immigration Statistics website, there is a population of 11.7 million illegal immigrants living in the United States as of March 2012. All of the 11.7 illegal immigrants do not pay taxes, but they utilize Americans taxes in many government programs. Illegal immigration does not benefit the economy and should be a door that should be closed off.
