“In memory of the men and women who served in the Vietnam War and later died as a result of their service. We honor and remember their sacrifice”(“Vietnam War in Memory”). This simple inscription stands at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in recognition of the names who are not able to join the walls with their fellow soldiers. The memorial as a whole contains the names of deceased Vietnam veterans, and stands tall for people to view and remember their friends and relatives who fought diligently in the war. However, Maya Lou’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a very controversial piece of art because of the public image towards the war, the making of the memorial and the powerful message represented in the work. According to “The Wall-USA”, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial organization was originally started by “Jan Scruggs, who served in Vietnam (in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade) from 1969-1970 as a[n] infantry corporal”. Being a wounded war veteran himself, once Scruggs got back stateside he began studying PTSD, or post traumatic stress disorder, and wanted to create a memorial for those who have fallen in order to make the transition easier for other veterans. Needing a place for the memorial, Scruggs lobbied for a land near the Rose Gardens and was granted 2 acres on July 1, 1980 by President Jimmy Carter. Instead of using government funds for the memorial, Scruggs and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund raised almost nine million dollars from “...corporations, foundations, unions, veterans and civic organizations and more than 275,000 individual Americans.”(“The Wall-USA). After they had enough money to create the memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial group had to determine what design they would use, so they held an open contest in which applicants submitted their ideas to be judged anonymously. The only regulations in the contest were “...the memorial should contain the names of every American who died in Vietnam or remained missing in action, make no political statement about the war, be in harmony with its surroundings and be contemplative in character”(Greenspan). The designs that were submitted, were anonymous to remove any prejudice towards a candidate because of their nationality. Also, the designs were to be judged by a panel of eight judges consisting of various sculptors, structural architects, landscape developers, and landscape architects. Although more than 1,400 designs had been submitted, including designs by professional architects and designers, the panel of judges chose Entry Number 1026, the 20 year old Maya Lin’s design. The winning design received
The film, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, documents the annihilation of the American Indians in the late 1800s. The film starts out in the Black Hills of the Dakotas, a land sacred to the Sioux Native Americans. The Sioux claimed the land and their population flourished due to the good resources in the area. The white people want to gain control of the land and force the natives to relocate to another area. They want the natives to assimilate and believe that this strategy will improve the nation. Senator Henry Dawes comes up with the plan to relocate the natives to several reservations, where they can learn the ways of the white people. Dawes uses an americanized native named Ohiyesa, or Charles, as proof of the success of assimilation. The Sioux are forced to assimilate in order to protect their lives.
The poem's persona and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall depend on each other to express the poem's intention. The poem's intention is to show that war is lethal, less than gloriful, and extremely real. Although years have gone by, these recollections are still affecting how he lives. Simply standing in front of the wall reminds the speaker of all of this. The Veterans Memorial takes on a life of its own. While the speaker is in its presense, the wall controls him. It forces him to remember painful memories and even cry, something he promised himself he would not do. The persona in the poem reacts to the power the wall has and realizes that he must face his past and everything related to it, especially Vietnam.

The Indians were being confined to crowed reservations that were poorly run, had scarce game, alcohol was plentiful, the soil was poor, and the ancient religious practices were prohibited. In the Wallach Gallery exhibition of Anna Hyatt Huntington’s sculpture (1876-1973), the viewer gets to discover different versions of the emblematic figure that is Joan of Arc, from small bronze medals, to much bigger works of art. A digital replication of the initial statue that was unveiled at Riverside Drive and 93rd Street in December 1915 is also available the public in the gallery. The success of the Joan of Arc – or The Maid of Orleans’s depictions results from the symbol that she fosters in European and American culture: a French medieval patriotic heroine who received visions directly from God and who was told to help France combat the English domination and who died burned at the stake, as a martyr.
As the birds are singing their sweet melody, the terrain of Arlington National Cemetery is filled with sadness. Although the brilliant rays of sun are shinning through the thick colossal treetops, there is a chill in the air. While watching the mourners, the feeling of their sorrows is all too real.

The establishment of the Vietnam Memorial was a controversial process because of the two different opposition groups that were in play during the war. In "Never Again: A Vietnam Syndrome in American Foreign Policy", Patrick Hagopian analyzes how various factions formed due to either support or opposition of the Vietnam War. As the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C was created, a vast majority of individuals were verbally protesting back and forth against each other, and neither of the two groups were either right or wrong. Jack Smith, a psychologist, noted that "everyone blamed everyone else for what had gone wrong. Military men blame policy makers, right-wingers blame the pinkos and media and protestors, the left blame the right" (Hagopian).
Art movement’s characteristics vary from nation to nation, but painting can be used as a critique of the socio-political reality in a given nation. It is a creative way to communicate with a population about economic, education and social issues. Therefore, The History of Cuernavaca and Morelos: Crossing the Barranca (ravine) Detail (1929-30) Fresco by Diego Rivera is a good example of how an artist uses his creativity to connect with people in relation to Mexican history. Art is an inspired way to share the complexity and challenge of a community. It can be used a way to respond to them likewise. Therefore, the concept of accessibility takes ingenuity. With his deepen knowledge of European and ancient Mexican art, it was not a documentation
