Marcell Davis Mrs. Keri Robinson ENG 122 February 14, 2024. Ray Bradbury is a science fiction writer who was way ahead of his time when writing about technology. This was highlighted in the short story, “The Veldt.” This story has elements similar to today's experiences when using virtual reality (VR) headsets. However, this short story was published in 1950, seventy-four years before VR technology. Within this short story, Ray Bradbury writes about the Hadley family who live in a house primarily controlled by technology. However, the main technology the story talks about is the new nursery that simulates the African veldt with the smell, sight, and sound of lions and other animals living there. Then it goes on to talk about what the house does for them. Such as the house “played and sang to them”. Ray Bradbury describes how the Hadley family lights work by turning on when they are within 10 feet of them and turning off after they leave. We can relate that to the motion-censored lights that we have today “African veldt appeared, in three dimensions, on all sides, in color reproduced to the final pebble and bit of straw. Furthermore, the impact of technology on kids in today's society is interchangeable with the impact of technology on the two kids in the Veldt. According to recent studies “Technology can lead to a decrease in a child’s mental health such as depression, anxiety, anger, and more. This anger can lead to rebellion towards their parents”. Wooddell: We can relate this to when the kids start to get angry and threaten the parents before their demise. Technology was not part of everyday life in the past, but now our day revolves around technology. This addiction to technology is like drugs and when children are stripped away from their phones, iPads, laptops, etc, they become violent. In the short story, the Veldt, the children became violent and killed their parents because their parents took away their technology. Ray Bradbury was ahead of his time with his imagination of technology which is almost identical to the technology in today's society ultimately showing the similarities in how the technology impacts the kids in the veldt and how it impacts kids today. He was very accurate in the way he depicted the way technology worked. It also showed how technology affects kids and we can see the similarities
