According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “love is defined as a strong feeling or constant affection for a person.” Love can be demonstrated between a family, a couple, or even a pet. Oftentimes, in the modern world, love is often mistaken for several meanings. In the movie, Marley & Me, love is shown between an owner and its pet and the strong bond of love that they have for one another. Though, in the novel, Safe Haven, love is presented between a man and a woman. Another way that love demonstrated differently is in the movie, Fireproof; love is defined within a family. In the modern world, love is usually portrayed between a man and a woman, however, love can be represented within a family and an owner and its pet.
In the movie, Marley & Me, the director depicted love in a different way. He depicted it between a man and a dog. The main character, Owen Wilson, had a strong bond with his dog. Own Wilson developed a strong love bond that was never broken. As the saying goes, a dog is a man’s best-friend. The main character got married and was able to keep his best-friend/Marley. They were all able to create wonderful and memorable memories. The love that he had for his pet, Marley, was so strong because of what they had went through and how Marley was always protecting and sticking up him when he was younger. However, the dog had to put down and his family was devastated. The last words his owners whispered to his ears were, “Look, I don't know where you're going from here, but you remember this: you’re a great dog, Marley. You are a great dog.” (106:08-106:19). True love is the love that everyone fantasizes about. It is the love that is unconditional and everlasting. Love is very hard to define since everybody's concept of love is different. However, in order to achieve a good relationship, people must have a well balanced power structure in their relationship, and good understanding and communication between them. In the stories, "The Yellow Wallpaper,'; "Hills Like White Elephants,'; and "A Doll's House,'; one could see the lopsided relationship between the males and females. In these stories the males predominates the females, and the characters seem to lack understanding, and communication toward another, which causes problems in their relationships.
The meaning of love cannot be defined in one sentence or even in 16 pages. Every human has his or her own definition of what love is. People define love by their own experiences whether as true love or ending in heartaches. In Raymond Carver’s short story, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, he describes what love is, by depicting what it is not. He executes this by portraying the experiences of four people, while using their dialogue and setting in the story to describe how something so beautiful as love can easily become an awkward and repelling subject to discuss.

Love is defined in many different ways; often times it depends on the person you ask. Sometimes it can be mistaken for lust or hate, and some people don’t even believe love exists. Although each individual carries their own opinion and perspective, it is safe to say that the portrayal of love in literature and film can appear much more magical and grand than it is in reality. Love can be an extremely controversial topic, but for the duration of this paper I ask the reader to hypothesize with me and explore the point of view from the literature and film aspect. I will be comparing the theme of love in the film Twilight and the story The Mysterious Stranger. Specifically, I will be comparing the theme of love in contradiction with “love” that

Love is commonly shown between two people in a relationship, and some spend their entire lives striving for a sense of adoration and comfort. Love is by far one of the most talked about, written about, expressed and implied feelings in the human array of emotions. The Beatles told us that “love is all you need”. Dr. Theodor Geisel, best known under the pseudonym Seuss, stated that “When you are in love you can't fall asleep because reality is better than your dreams.” Douglas Adams gave us a dry warning in his book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, stressing that, in terms of love, “Avoid, if at all possible.” With all the artists, poets, writers, philosophers, scientists, and thinkers of the world giving us conflicting and equally meaningful views of love, can it really be explained? Love is loosely defined as “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties” and, indeed, there are aspects of this complex emotion that can be pinpointed and discussed on all three levels of psychological analysis, from cognition to physiology to the sociocultural aspects of love.

Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definition by means of the Internet, books, and articles I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia was probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All in which can only be defined by one word and that it love.

All throughout high school my English teachers would assign us to read a variety of novels and passages with the theme pertaining to distress or love. This made me become more familiar of pieces of literature like Jane Eyre from Charlotte Bronte, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton and poems like What thing is love from George Peele. Each of their styles of writing were different, but despite their prominent differences I also began to realize their similarities the more that I was exposed to them. I noticed that a common component that these authors had was that they were trying to express what it meant to be in love to them. It was almost like they were making an effort to come up with a definition for love. In Jane Eyre we get introduced
