Maintaining humanity is important because it gives people hope and faith. Religion is based largely upon kindness and humanity, and many people are faithful to a religion as a source of hope. Humanity is threatened when atrocities, such as genocide, happen. Millions are killed, and this is a horrible crime that often happens as a result of war. A loss of humanity could result in an angry population, or in a situation similar to Syria, where extremist groups rule parts of the country. First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung relates to these overarching questions in many ways. The narrator, Loung Ung, is the victim of a genocide in Cambodia. She has to hide from the Khmer Rouge, a Communist group targeting many groups. Among them are the ethnic Chinese, the ethnic Vietnamese, and capitalists. Overall, humanity holds a lot of value and the consequences of losing it are severe.
Maintaining humanity is important for a many reasons. Most of these have to do with keeping faith in a religion, and not losing hope. A common expression when someone sees something bad happening is “I’ve lost faith in humanity.” Although this may be said jokingly, it is in fact a dangerous thing if it really happens. Overall, religion is largely dependent on the ...

Daniel Goldhagen (2009) states that in less than four years, Cambodia’s political leaders induced their followers to turn Cambodia’s backwards and regressing society into a massive concentration camp in which they steadily killed victims. Furthermore, a deeper understanding of the Cambodian genocide is provided within Luong Ung’s personal narrative, “First They Killed My Father” (2000). Ung’s memoir is a riveting account of the Cambodian genocide, which provides readers with a personalized account of her family’s experience during the genocide. She informs readers of the causes of the Cambodian genocide and she specifies the various eliminationist techniques used to produce the ideological Khmer vision. Nonetheless, she falls short because

Terrorism has been around for centuries and religion-based violence has been around just as long. (Hoffman, 2). The violence was never referred to as terrorism though. Only up to the nineteenth century has religion been able to justify terrorism (Hoffman, 2). Since then, religious terrorism became motivated and inspired by the ideological view (Hoffman, 3). Therefore, it has turned against the main focus of religion and more towards the views of the extremist and what is happening politically (Winchester, 4).
