Do you think the American Flag should be desecrated? I do not think the flag should be desecrated, it should be protected. The reason I think that is because its value to the amazing country, the significance behind the colors, and the time our soldiers put forth for us and the flag. The American Flag should mean so much to us as American citizens, that we should not ever think about doing something that harsh to our country's representation. The flag should only be flown in the air upright not any other directions. I think one of the reasons the flag should not be desecrated is because its value to the amazing country. I thinks it value is important because it represents the freedom our country has. Why would you want to burn something that means so much to our country? Our American Flag should mean so much to every citizen in our country, because our soldiers are out in battle everyday fighting for us, when others are not having the stress and worries that they are. When they leave their family, they never know if they will get to come home and see them again or not. …show more content…
The three colors of our flag each have a separate meaning to them.
The white stands for the innocence, the red stands for the blood, and the blue stands for the vigilance. Each color should mean something to everyone deep inside of their heart, because we have people that are out on the battlefields risking their lives and time away from their families to make our lives much better, never knowing when their last breath or step may be. We should never think about doing anything that harsh to the flag ever. I think that people should be harshly punished when they do something like
this. Our soldiers are all over the world fighting for you, your country, and the representation of the flag and freedom. The freedom that we have today all came from our soldiers fighting for you us one way or another. Our soldiers put their life our their on the battlefields to make us back here in the country, live comfortably and freely. I feel like desecrating the flag is also doing something to the soldiers, because they support the flag, just like we all should. The soldiers are the reasons we have the things we have today, so I think that you are also being rude to the soldiers when you do something that harsh to the country representation. Our soldiers go out for us everyday and put their lives in danger for our country and for citizens ourselves. To be that disrespectful to our country and our soldiers in just not called for, doing anything to flag except hang it in the upright position and the right way and let it fly is not right. If you want to do something like that to the flag, then you should be really punished. Donald Trump has once said’ Make America Great Again”, so we need to do something to the people that are being disrespectful to our country and our soldiers.
I believe people lack respect for the flag and what it stands for. Although most people are proud to be an American, some don’t understand what it truly means to be an American. The flag has a history, and should be respected because of that history. Although most believe that respect should be earned, our flag has earned this many times over. And I believe that our flag is taken for granted.
Free speech and the First Amendment rights do not give people lisence to desecrate a symbol of pride and freedom. It is not all right to protect those who let it burn, lighting up the sky with their hatred. It definitely is not acceptable to insult the men and women who fight every day to protect this nation by burning the symbol of their labors. Therefore, it is crucial that the Supreme Court pass the amendment to the Constitution to protect the flag of the US.
The colors red, white and blue did not have any real significance in America until their rights for freedom and territory were challenged. "The American flag played no significant role in American life until the Civil War, during the fight at Fort Sumter" (Goldstein 1). Then, to all northerners it became a symbol of pride and an object of "public adoration" (1). The flag was held in such high esteem that the Flag Protection Movement was created in 1890 so that there would be no commercialism of the object(2). The FPM felt as though politicians and merchants were "prostituting" the flag so, in 1900 they joined with the American Flag Association and made a set...
To the Majority Opinion it’s a flag of our nation but to the Dissenting opinion its means more than just a flag. It means “White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & velour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice." In this case the Dissenting opinion gave reasons why flag burning should be banned. Eventually Congress passed the Flag Protection Act of 1989. The Act banned flag burning regardless of whether the person burning the flag intended to cause offense to
Confederate Racism The Confederate flag is a famous symbol of the South’s involvement in the American Civil War. The controversy surrounding this flag has received a great bit of media attention considering how deeply affected and offended some people have become. Southerners consider themselves personally affected. A majority of supporters state that banning the Confederate flag strips them of their heritage, referring to the South’s part in the American Civil War.
The first reason why the government should not ban flag burning is that it is a form of expression that is covered by the right to free speech. The First Amendment to the US Constitution states: “Congress shall make no law. abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances” (Legal Information Institute, 1992a). This amendment guarantees American citizens the right to express their dissatisfaction with the policies of the government without fear of consequences, including arrest, so long as the demonstration does not violate laws. The act of flag burning is a means to express this kind of dissatisfaction.
Another view of the American flag is the colors red, white, and blue. Some Americans see the color red as blood for all the blood shed on the battlegrounds. Another color white for victory or triumph in our great nation of America. Lastly, the color blue for the sadness or sorrow felt because of the lives lost in war.
The flag of the United States symbolizes our nation and more. The colors of the flag were not just chosen randomly, but with meanings behind it. The specific colors wanted to be able to symbolize our country with powerful words behind it. The separate colors must be able to unite everyone as one. The flag should represent the nation, so there should
Some have seen friends and family get tortured and murdered by their own government for daring to do things we take for granted every day. For those who risked everything simply for the chance to become an American....what kind of feelings do they have for the flag when they Pledge Allegiance the first time? Go to a naturalization ceremony and see for yourself, the tears of pride, the thanks, the love and respect of this nation, as they finally embrace the American flag as their own. Ask one of them if it would be OK to tear up the flag.
First I would like to include some information about our american flag and how it came about. In the British colonies of North America before the Revolution, each of the 13 colonies had its flag. On Jan. 2, 1776, the first flag of the United States was raised at Cambridge, Mass., by George Washington. Known as the Grand Union flag, it consisted of 13 stripes, alternate red and white, with a blue canton bearing the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew. Congress, on June 14, 1777, enacted a resolution “that the Flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 stars white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” On Jan. 13, 1794, Vermont and Kentucky having been admitted to the Union, Congress added a stripe and a star for each state. Congress in 1818 enacted that the 13 stripes, denoting the 13 original colonies, be restored and a star added to the blue canton for each state after its admission to the Union. All of the states and territories of the United States also have their own flags. Betsy Ross created the first flag. Betsy would often tell her children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends of the fateful day when three members of a secret committee from the Continental Congress came to call upon her. Those representatives, George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross, asked her to sew the first flag. This meeting occurred in her home some time late in May 1776. George Washington was then the head of the Continen...
Sadly, this violent attack provides a perfect example of the racism symbolically presented by the Confederate flag. However, some southerners would argue that the initial meaning of the Confederate flag had little association to anything (Prince, n.d.). The flag initially was viewed by many southern natives as a symbol of southern heritage and pride (World Book Student, 2016). As mentioned above, the flag was flown during the Civil War when southern states were attempting to secede from the northern states. For this reason, the flag is symbolic to southern natives because it symbolizes the beliefs of their ancestors; beliefs that many lost their lives for.
The burning of an American flag is not necessarily anti-American or unpatriotic. Sometimes, the greatness and majesty of the flag is better portrayed in the powerful political and societal statement of destroying it. This act can convey the feeling of the American people that their government is not the body it should be or that it is not doing the will of the people. This is probably one of the most emotional actions they can take to get the government's attention. Some of these protestors may even love the flag as much as those who are for banning flag burning, but the burners want to emphasize the seriousness of their complaint. The act of burning a flag may be the people's way of telling the government that it is co...
Many people are very offended by burning America’s “national symbol” and view the act as “un-patriotic” and extremely disrespectfu8l towards the nation, its history and heritage. Many Americans believed that flag burning and desecration should be criminalized. However, other citizens believe that flag desecration is protected under the constitution and should be legal.
...nishing desecration of the flag dilutes the very freedom that makes this emblem so revered, and worth revering."
People should be punished for burning the American Flag because they are destroying a representation of our country that we stand and pledge to everyday. The author exclaims, “...citizens who peacefully express disagreement with government policies may be slaughtered” (American Flags Stands for Tolerance.18.5-9). Although this is for the People’s Republic of China, it was put in the text for a reason. That reason being, to prove that someone that destroys something that represents our country, or disagrees with something that represents the country, should be punished. Standing during the pledge or national anthem shows the freedoms we have, which is a reason we do stand in front of the pledge. You are allowed to have your opinion but, you should not be allowed to dismantle something that speaks for our country.
