Music is an art form that has been around since humans were created. All over the world music is played in many different forms and styles. As early as the 1950s, a new style of music was being created in the United States, one that would forever change the world. Not only would this music bring a completely different sound, but it changed the way people acted, dressed, and even their lifestyles. This new style of music became known as rock and roll, and while no one person created it, many artists have added their own unique inputs and helped shape music into what it is today. Rock and roll branches off and has many genres all to which owe it as the roots. Without the contributions of every artist who has performed, the style would not be what it is today.
One artist who contributed to rock and roll and helped change some of the image of the music was Joan Jett. “Joan Jett, born Joan Marie Larkin on September 22, 1958, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, spent her childhood on the move before developing her love of Rock & Roll in California” (Joan Jett). Jett received her first guitar when she was 14 years old and was always interested in writing. Once Joan finally moved to California, she often hung out at a popular club for teens and became inspired by the music there. At the age of 15, Joan joined the band The Runaways and wrote the song “Cherry Bomb” (Joan Jett Biography). Joan Jett later went on to form her own band, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and establish herself as one of the most influential women in rock and roll history. Today, Joan Jett still tours and produces music and is a household name for rock and roll fans.
Joan Jett started her musical career in The Runaways, an all-girl punk rock band. ...

...tributors to rock and roll history, when in reality every artist leaves something behind to change it. Joan Jett, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Eminem all helped make an impact and shape rock and roll history. These artists helped break down gender barriers, race barriers, and create new styles of music as well. No matter how big or how small, everyone has the opportunity to change history, one day at a time.

What is music? Music is a very broad word that can mean and reflect several and different points of view. I don’t know about you, but to my understanding music is freedom of speech in the expression of feelings and emotions. Depending on the type of music base on genre, everyone tends to listen towards what their heart desires. Within the different types of genre, there are artists and bands that explore these genres and paint their points of view on how to express it. Artists such as the Weekend and Romeo Santos are two of my favorite artists that I love to listen on a daily basis, but what makes these artists so special? Romeo Santos and the Weekend may have differences in language, but they have several similarities that stands out to me
Music can be traced back into human history to prehistoric eras. To this day archeologists uncover fragments of ancient instruments as well as tablets with carved lyrics buried alongside prominent leaders and highly influential people. This serves as a testament to the importance and power of music, as well as its influence in society. Over its many years of existence, music’s powerful invocation of feelings has allowed it to evolve and serve many purposes, one being inspiring change. American journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson once said, “Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of fuel. Sentimental people call it inspiration, but what they really mean is fuel.” This fuel is the very things that powers the influence of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society, that author Glenn C. Altschuler writes about in his book, “All Shook Up – How Rock ‘n’ Roll Changed America.” Between 1945 and 1965 Rock ‘n’ Roll transformed American society and culture by helping to ease racial integration and launch a sexual revolution while most importantly developing an intergenerational identity.
Leibovitz's big ticket to celebrity photography was probably in 1975 when she photographed the Rolling Stone's on tour. She then became the famous band's official photographer. Her famous trail of celebrity portraiture has started. Meanwhile, Andy Warhol became another of Leibovitz's employers as he used her talent in his "Interview" magazine. It was a chance of fate that Warhol picked her as Leibovitz was his second choice for his particular subject.
During this time her mother passed away and she started living with her aunt due to the abuse from her stepfather. Forced to live on the streets at times, she would try to listen to the radio every chance she got and would sneak into movie theaters to absorb the popular music of the day. Listening to singers such as Louis Armstrong, Conne Boswell, and Bing Crosby. She continued to dance with her friends for pennies and would enter multiple amateur contests in Harlem on a
Throughout our history, music has constantly been influenced by trends of its time, reflecting social, economic and political changes. On the other hand, music has defined the culture and social events or leading them to social revolution. For instance, guys like Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder greatly contributed to social events. Such leaders and musical revolutionaries have existed throughout history.
Ella was born on April 25, 1917, in Newport News, Virginia. In school, she sang in glee club, but her passion was to rather dance. In the 1920s and early 1930s , jazz began to sweep the nation. In 1932, Fitzgerald’s mother was killed in a car accident. After her mother’s death, the two sisters were shifted among her family members and Ella became a restless, unhappy teen. She usually w...
Many people from the 1900’s contributed to the evolution of the history of rock and roll. However, Jimi Hendrix was the rock legend who changed the way music was made and he raised the bar for the rest of the music industry. Jimi was born in 1942, in Seattle, Washington, he had a difficult childhood, being raised by a young mom who had Jimi at seventeen and a dad who eventually left and started another family, he was often left living with relatives. He only saw his mom a few times before she eventually died in 1958. In many ways music became a sanctuary for Jimi since he grew up not having much. Jimi loved blues and rock and roll and when he was sixteen Jimi got his first acoustic guitar and taught himself how to play. Shortly after he began
Many people and many styles of music influenced Rock and Roll. The styles included Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Bluegrass, Boogie-Woogie, and Rockabilly. Each was a major factor into the introduction of a new style of music called Rock ‘N’ Roll.
Many considered Rock ‘n’ Roll culture as a bad influence to all people, but as the genre aged and the now not-so-young crowds had matured, Rock was respected and appreciated by most of America for it was now seen as a legitimate art form. As for its creators, there is no one other than the greats of race music to thank for that. A time of shift involving a large number of African-Americans migrating to cities in the north. This was due to the aspiration of finding new life away from the south.
...itely assumed is that Janis is a legend, who will never be forgotten. Just like the old blues singers whom she idolized, Janis will remain firmly etched into the memory of all those who were there during her time at Rock's Pantheon. This memory has also been passed down to a whole new generation, who are at last appreciating records by an artist who could sing without state-of-the-art technology. Today, Janis' albums have gone gold, platinum and triple platinum. Her Greatest Hits Album still tops the charts on the American Billboard, and numerous compilation albums have been released since her death, including the box-set "Janis". She has been the subject of a feature documentary "Janis" (1973), more recently VH1s "Legends", and a film of her life is currently under discussion. Three decades on and still, few other women could've earned the nickname "Pearl" so well.
She was hired by Teddy Wilson when she was 16 as a vocalist for his band. The group was together for a year, but before Carpenter left the group, she managed to recorded two music pieces with them. She later joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1943 and toured extensively and with them gaining worldwide attention.
While going through our history of rock and roll course, one thing has become apparent, and that is that music brings people together. Sometimes it takes music to get a point across, and our world has endured a lot of social and a cultural change, which is how we music today. Just like our world is evolving, music is the same way. When a baby is born until the day it dies, it has evolved internally and externally and that is the same way I view the history of rock “n” roll. For instance, the great wars and the civil rights movement help influence to history of rock and roll. It gave people a purpose to listen to music and let artist express themselves through their songs. I’m not saying by any means that all the struggles we as a nation have
Rock and Roll has the most incredible history. Before there was rock and roll, there was blues. Most people think rock music started with Elvis Presley, but he didn’t record his first single until 1953. The first recorded song described as “Genuine Rock-and-Roll” was “Rocket ’88” by pianist Ike Turner and singer Jackie Brenston in 1951. Rock-and-Roll music in the 1950’s was described as a mixture of jazz, blues, country, and has a stronger guitar, bass, and drums. (A&E Biography Channel UK “SAM PHILLIPS The man who Invented Rock & Roll”. 1 Feb. 2013. Web. 9 Dec. 2013) Over time what was first described as “Rock and Roll” has changed drastically, and will continue to change over time. Even though some people feel Pop has the best history, Rock and Roll really does. It has actually impacted more people’s lives than any other genre, it unites people from all over the world in a positive way, and influenced media culture by breaking down walls no one else had.
It was also kind of difficult for me to explain rock & roll specifically, because it contains many of the elements of the different genres from some of the earlier music we studied. I just know that rock & roll wouldn’t have become what it is today, if it were not for our musicians in the past which has allowed us to learn and grow from them.
