The United States is the richest country in regards to volunteer work around the world. We continue to have the best volunteer work in the western hemisphere (Thoits and Hewitt 115). By definition, volunteering is “any activity in which time is given freely to benefit another person, group, or organization” (qtd. in Petrzelka and Mannon 238). There are many ways people can volunteer within their own communities such as in a food pantry or even around the world by doing mission trips. There is also many reasons why people volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, give back to the community and develop new skills. Many people of all participate in volunteer work. Throughout the world, volunteering effects not only the recipient …show more content…
When volunteering you learn a lot about where you are living. Many people are in need that we don't realize. Everyone needs help in ways they others may not know about. In the article by Padraig MacNeela, he quoted a participant in volunteer work, “I do have very strong feelings about giving back to the community that you live in. Because I take from the community as well…giving something back as well as taking” (qtd. in MacNeela 131). It’s important to give back to the community. As MacNeela stated in his quoted statement, people take from the community they live in all the time. A nice gesture would be giving back to what you have taken so that someone else in need can take the help. You could also look at volunteering as “keeping the community alive” (Petrzelka and Mannon 246). The more people that work together and help others within their community, the more the community will strive to be alive and up going. The people within are the people that determine the well being of the community as a whole. The more people that do good, the more the people will feel good. Another reason why people volunteer is that they want to develop more skills and enhance their self esteem. Peggy A. Thoits and Lyndi N. Hewitt have found research that mentioned people volunteer “to learn new skills, to develop the self, to enhance self-esteem, to prepare for a career, to express personal values and community commitment...” (qtd. 117). Giving back to the community can help you develop many different points in yourself. Helping gets you out into the world where so much is to do to make yourself a better person or to develop new interests within yourself. This gives you a chance to show who you want to be or even who you are meant to be. New skills that people develop could be anything from how to function a service/event such as a soup kitchen or to just better social skills
volunteering is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. In this report i will talk about the different types of volunteering in the:
Volunteering is a large part many nonprofit organizations. A volunteer is choosing to donate their personal time and resources to the cause they support. By volunteering, an individual has an outlet to express their values or embrace a particular culture within pout society.
When a person contributes to their community, they gain more than a just a sense of accomplishment. The experience a person gets in return from helping the community is invaluable. It is a mutually beneficial experience. A person who helps those in need gains knowledge and experience that can help them in future endeavors.
It helps a person make new friends and it is good for increasing the number of people one can fall back to when they need someone to listen to their problems. It is also helpful with building one’s social and relationship skills. “[Volunteer service] gives [a person] the opportunity to practice and develop social skills” (Saisan and Smith). Another benefit is that it is good for one’s physical and mental well-being. “Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.”
For example, one can volunteer to clean up their community. This could mean cleaning up litter, doing yard work for someone in need, cleaning up an abandoned property, and many other things. This is important because it can not only make one's community more appealing, but it can also help to reduce potential health hazards. Another example of volunteering could be providing for the needy and homeless. People living in a community are what make the community, which means helping fellow citizens is a fantastic way to be involved. Soup kitchens and homeless shelters are great places to do
Everyone should give back to the community whether it is something small by helping others out or something big to donating to the poor. Anyone could help out the community. For example, in the Christmas Carol Scrooge was approached by two gentlemen who were asking if Scrooge can donate money to the needy and the poor but then Scrooge replies “are there no prisoners?” Scrooge also says “are there no work houses?” and then Scrooge never donated which he should have donated. He didn’t donate but he did help the Cratchets until he was visited by a spirit. He helped the Cratchets by giving his clerk a Cratchet a
I saw in Egypt a city full of dirt and debris cleaning itself up; a city whose citizens became full of pride to say that they are from Alexandria and a city that is changing. Through volunteerism change is happening around the world, from the Middle East and Eastern Europe to Massachusetts. Through volunteerism a community is strengthening and pride is growing. That is the true impact of volunteerism. I started volunteering nine years ago and I was doing so without considering its impact and accepting what people told me. It wasn’t until five months ago that I got to witness and realize the impact of volunteering. It took me eight years and seven months to discover that the impact of volunteerism is more than what I was told. It took me eight years and seven months to understand that volunteerism impacts
Volunteerism creates a stronger community in several ways. Generally, volunteering creates a better life in citizens and instills happiness. Specifically, in a survey of 101 randomly selected districts in the UK including districts such as; Bristol,
Being a volunteer to me is not a duty or an extracurricular it has been about learning and helping others. Helping others changes one’s life and expands one’s view of the world. In my life my experiences as a volunteer have shaped my values, actions, and goals. In retrospect, the moments that I cherish the most are the times when I was able to make an impact on others lives and see the outcome of my endeavors. Recently, I had the opportunity to volunteer at an intensive two-week program that invited minority students to the Loma Linda University Campus to learn about the vast majority of careers in health.
Volunteering is an important contributor to our society. It is also a great opportunity to learn different skills, especially young people, and they will become a part of who you are. Your future employers will thank you for it, as will any college or university that you decide to apply too. It is also a perfect way for everyone to meet different people and experience different things. Volunteering not only actively will help people; it also helps the environment. Most of all, it allows you to become a better person for what you have
If we open our lives and give service to those less fortunate than ourselves, we allow our hearts to receive immeasurable happiness. When we sacrifice our time to help someone in need, whether it is a great or small need, we become a part of their life and can help alleviate heavy burdens. Making time to help people in need creates opportunities for us to develop new and lasting relationships. Serving our fellowmen allows the best in each of us to shine through and we can become examples to our children.
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
Community service is a voluntary, unpaid act of kindness that an individual perform to benefit and help others who are in need. It is important for individuals to do community services. It is not only about helping the community but, also making a difference in someone’s life. It can help a person grow and build connections mentally, physically, and emotionally. Mentally, a person who does community service is able to change their perspective of the world and appreciate the things they have. Physically, it can help a person be more motivated and explore what is going on in their community. Emotionally, it can help a person feel kindness therefore, it can also help an individual interact with others, build a relationship, and further their communication. Participating in community service can help a person become more active and involved in their community, it can also build your work related skills and make you gain experience to network with future employers and companies. Community Service helps an
Volunteering in your local community is great way to give back and set a positive example at the same time. Let’s take a look at some of the problems in our community that affect many people.
A common misconception about volunteering is that it only helps the cause. Often times that aspect is the only part that is highlighted when the topic of donating time comes up. There is a different side of volunteering though. Many volunteers donate their time to help better the community they live in and the people that live in it. When they choose to do this they not only help others but they are also helping better themselves. Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities.
