The Unforgetable A Rose for Emily
In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, we see how past events
effect the main character Miss Emily, especially her mental state. She
seems to live in a sort of fantasy world where death has no real meaning.
Miss Emily refuses to accept or even recognize, the death of her father or
that of Colonel Satoris. She does not want to acknowledge the fact that
the world around her was changing therefore Miss Emily surrounds herself
with death. What Faulkner tries to state in this story is that you should
not let death overpower your life. A person should try and let go of their
beloved ones after they have passed away. He also tries to state is to
always expect the unexpected, like when Miss Emily killed Homer.
Faulkner chooses to use third person narration in this particular
story for a couple of reasons. He tries to show Emily's world to us as
seen through the eyes of a respectable resident, so we can understand the
town life as if we lived there. This way we were able to understand how
the people of Jefferson thought of her. If the story would have been told
in first person we would not have been able to relate to Miss Emily. The
reason for that would be, if she would have been the narrator we would have
understood the story in a hole different manner. Faulkner used third person
narration and from that we were able to find out many things about Miss
Emily's past. For instance the death of her father, the love she had for
Homer, and how she felt the need for affection. Those ideas she would have
kept to herself, if she were to have told the story.
The language and dialogue that Faulkner provides Miss Emily with
enables the readers to understand how she feels about the town. She is not
very pleased with the changes that have occurred therefore she lets
everyone that she comes in contact with know how she views those specific
changes. For example when the new Mayor tells her that she owes taxes in
Jefferson, she just keeps on insisting that she does not owe any money.
In “A Rose for Emily”, the point-of-view is in third-person, but the narrator of the story is not given. Throughout the story, the narrator use “They”, but sometimes the narrator tend to change to first-person and use “We” instead of “They”. When the narrator manage to use the word “We”, they refers it to the townspeople. By using the word “We”, the narrator changes his or her thoughts to the townspeople that make his ideas into a belief in the society. The point of the narrator talk about this story is to tell us the reason of Emily’s death. Just like the protagonist, the narrator is also a mysterious person that doesn’t want to reveal his or her identity. According to the story, the narrator seems understand and care about Emily. The narrator called her as “Miss Emily” whenever s/he states her. In “Why I live at the PO”, the point-of-view is in first person and the sister as the narrator. Throughout the story, the narrator always writes the story with “I” instead of “he” or “you”. The main reason of the narrator to talk about the story is to tell us how there is a conflict in the family. The narrator feels that she is shunned by her family, although she is the breadwinner in her family. Sister can be called as an unreliable narrator as she wants to have revenge on her own sister, Stella-Rondo, who makes her alienated from the family. Being a “we” and not an “I,” a reader is left to decipher the identities of the narrator. The narrator talks about the men and women, allowing the reader to decide that the voice is both male and female. This narrator also discusses what happened after the Civil War and Miss Emily’s death. This variety of members to the narrator impacts the story by explaining how Miss Emily grew up, how she lived through adulthood, and what happened after her death. The way the point of view almost intrudes on Miss Emily’s life reminds readers that even though the story is in first person perspective, it is also outside of Miss Emily’s reclusive life. The way the narrator speaks without respect to time, allows readers to understand what the narrator believes in regard to Miss Emily. Had they spoke chronologically, the shock at the end of the story would not have made as much of an impact. Readers would not be able to go along with the narrator’s opinions that Emily is not crazy; readers would automatically conclude the Emily is crazy. One may have heard the simple saying that “Love can make you do crazy things.” Many adults can confirm that the saying proves true; one could even spend a few hours watching CSI type of shows that portray the stories of two love-struck people becoming cold-hearted killers just to be with their significant other. Why would they be so desperate to be together that they would kill anyone who got in between them? Desperation so serve that they would even kill a loved one? It could be that as children they were deprived of love and nourishment that children normally receive. This deprivation of love led them to cling to anyone that made them think they were being love. Emily attempts to recapture her past by escaping from the present. She wants to leave the present and go back to a happier past. Miss Emily wants to find the love she once knew. “After her father’s death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all” (243). The theme of "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner is that people should let go of the past, moving on with the present so that they can prepare to welcome their future. Emily was the proof of a person who always lived on the shadow of the past; she clung into it and was afraid of changing. The first evident that shows to the readers right on the description of Grierson's house "it was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street." The society was changing every minutes but still, Emily's house was still remained like a symbol of seventieth century. The second evident show in the first flashback of the story, the event that Miss Emily declined to pay taxes. In her mind, her family was a powerful family and they didn't have to pay any taxes in the town of Jefferson. She even didn't believe the sheriff in front of her is the "real" sheriff, so that she talked to him as talk to the Colonel who has died for almost ten years "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson." Third evident was the fact that Miss Emily had kept her father's death body inside the house and didn't allow burying him. She has lived under his control for so long, now all of sudden he left her, she was left all by herself, she felt lost and alone, so that she wants to keep him with her in order to think he's still living with her and continued controlling her life. The fourth evident and also the most interesting of this story, the discovery of Homer Barron's skeleton in the secret room. The arrangement inside the room showing obviously that Miss Emily has slept with the death body day by day, until all remained later was just a skeleton, she's still sleeping with it, clutching on it every night. The action of killing Homer Barron can be understood that Miss Emily was afraid that he would leave her, afraid of letting him go, so she decided to kill him, so that she doesn't have to afraid of losing him, of changing, Homer Barron would still stay with her forever.
