According to Joe messerli in”should same sex marriage be legalized” (balancedpolitics.org) denying gay couples the right to marry is a violation of religious freedom. Civil and religious marriages are two separate institutions. The First Amendment in the bill of rights states that “ There shall be no law respecting an establishment of religion. Therefor denying homosexual citizens the right to get married is a violation of the United States Constitution. The reason to involve religion is because most of the negative feedback from gay marriage comes from religious groups. For the reason being passages of the Bible declaring homosexulity a sin and punishment for homosexual acts. According to the bible's old testament “ If there is man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act, they shall surely be put to death. Their blood is upon them.” (Leviticus 20:13) Of course the cycle of anti homosexual passages are repeated throughout the Bible's texts. But our government is not run by religious doctrine so surely no text written in the Bible should be or ever be taken seriously by our government. Joe messerli explains this idea well by saying that just because religions say something about a topic, for example saying the lords name in vein, does not mean that we have to go around punishing the people who curse a-little.(balancedpolitics.org) The separation of church and state is made clear in our constitution and the government needs to abide by our nations foundation
According to Joe Messerli, homo sexuality is an accepted lifestyle nowadays with most evidence of being homosexual strongly supporting a biological cause. Homosexuality has been traced as far back as antient Greece, so ...

Many facts about homosexuality have been brought into the late, and many myths dragged into the dark, but believe the debate between whether our county should give homosexual couples the right to marry will be persistent through many of the years to come. Just as racism, war and bigotry proceeds to grasp americas thoughts. We need to step out of the age of bigotry and narrow mindedness and let our homosexual brothers and sisters pursue happiness just like the rest of our people. Equality is key to the future of our nation and our world, so it is up to you now to decide our cultural future. But most of all the choice is yours to decide what kind of person you are going to be.
...a was based on Christian beliefs, hence, a nation under God. Acts 5: 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than any human authority”(Holy Bible). This Biblical verse reflects the Christian beliefs of our founders that men should try to live their lives as God desires. Leviticus 18: 22 says that you should not lie with another man as a women; it is an abomination (Holy Bible). If the United States was truly obedient to God as it should be then there would not be any laws passed allowing gay marriage or abortion. These go against the Bible, the word of God, but the Government has deemed them acceptable. This issue shows how obedience to authority can cripple a nation. The Government is allowing an issue they should never have considered to become recognized as acceptable. If this path continues, society will continue to crumble and decay.
Homosexuality existed since ancient times, for example in Ancient Greece, where it was evident through many literary and artistic works claiming that “pederasty” which means homoerotic relations between adult men and adolescent boys were very common. The adult male was called “Erastes” which means the “older lover” who was usually the role mode...
The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is a controversial law in the past as it is now in the present. I chose to write about this law because the concept of gay marriage is being liberally accepted today compared to its heavy intolerance in the past. Today, countless couples are trying to marry yet must face obstacles such as DOMA that hinders their freedom to marry. I, myself, is an advocate for same-sex marriage and learning more about DOMA lets me see what these same-sex couples go through. In this paper, I will discuss the origins of the DOMA, what it encompasses, what the effects are today and in the future, how DOMA affects me, and how DOMA affects Guam.
In most cultures, lesbianism occurs prior to heterosexual marriages. These facts were gathered by Faderman in 1981. Female-female romantic relationships were found in European communities since the 17th century through the early 20th century after studying the fiction and poetry written during this period (Burn, 2004). Today, many societies view bisexuality and homosexuality as a sickness. The societies deny their existence entirely. However, biologists and psychologists believe that both are mere instances of many human variations. After successful lobbying by gay and lesbian political organizations in 1974, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) eliminated homosexuality from its list of mental disorder. The APA now takes the position that homos...
One year ago, the United States Supreme Court made two judgments in favor of marriage equality. This was once considered impossible, however, the United States has had a tremendous change of heart in supporting gay marriage. People even speculate that same-sex marriage will be legal in the whole U.S. within few years. Currently there are 17 states that have legalized same sex marriage, while in 33 states it remains banned. The majority of the states that still ban gay marriage have a very high Christian population. Many Christians believe that being homosexual conflicts the bible and refuse to accept it. In my opinion this illustrates why it is better to separate state from religion. We have also seen the church try to influence government decision in England, the archbishop of Canterbury recently stated "The concept of marriage as a normative place for procreation is lost. The idea of marriage as covenant ...
Halperin, David. "Is There a History of Sexuality?." The Lesbian and Gay Studies Reader. Ed. Henry
Famous children’s author Dr. Seuss once said, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind". Gay rights, at the moment, are one of the most publicized and well known controversial subjects of this decade. The sides clearly drawn one fighting for rights as simple as being married the other stating that it defames their religion and goes against the definition of marriage, being between a man and a woman. The individuals who are fighting for their civil rights are fallowing the same path that African Americans and women have taken, but the change has started and in over 13 states gays have been given their basic rights and more state are joining in the fight both for and against the topic.
Sixty years from now, the American people will look back on the 21st century and be appalled at how the people from today allowed their government to make it illegal for certain couples to get married, just as the people of today are disgusted with the ban on marriage between interracial couples before 1967. Being so advanced technologically, it is surprising how America is still so behind on the issue of same-sex marriage. The United States should push aside the religious argument in this debate, and truly separate its church and state as it claims to do so. From its slow beginning to the rapid increase of support in the 70’s, homosexual marriage has been a controversial debate that hopefully will end in the near future.
Within America’s society today, 3.8 percent of the population is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. With only 17 of the 50 states legalizing and recognizing this type of relationship (“History…”), it puts a stronghold on same-sex couples to publicly declare their love with the promise of marriage. Same-sex marriages should be legalized because everyone has equal rights of freedom and liberty.
Homosexuality is a sensitive topic and often avoided in conversation. For centuries the human race has oppressed and persecuted others strictly because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual etc. Although disturbing to most of us, these actions still occur in our society today, as many believe that homosexuality is abnormal and disgraceful. One supporter of this belief is Michael Levin, who strongly believes that homosexuality is highly abnormal and thus, undesirable. Although his beliefs and theories supporting this claim are subjective, there is evidence that can support his stance on this topic; we will analyze this claim in further detail and how it relates to his other views mentioned in this essay.
So to say that the bible is insignificant and bears no impact on the way we think would be ignorance. The bible may say that marriage must be between a man and woman but it also says that a marriage shouldn’t be severed by a divorce (for example, in Malachi 2;16 where it is said “the god of Israel HATES DIVORCE . Jesus himself said nothing on the matter of homosexuality and yet he was very clear on divorce, so why are gay people the only people who must follow the biblical law? As society has evolved so has our views and laws, although some still stemming somewhat from the bible, we have moved past the closed minded ways of the bible into a more culturally accepting and non-discriminating society. Saying that homosexuality and the marriage of homosexual individuals is wrong and should be outlawed because of our dominant religion is absurd, especially considering that a large proportion of society today doesn’t even affiliate themselves with the bible at

An issue that has, in recent years, begun to increase in arguments, is the acceptability of homosexuality in society. Until recently, homosexuality was considered strictly taboo. If an individual was homosexual, it was considered a secret to be kept from all family, friends, and society. However, it seems that society has begun to accept this lifestyle by allowing same sex couples. The idea of coming out of the closet has moved to the head of homosexual individuals when it used to be the exception.
The general outlines to Catholic religion are referenced throughout the bible; nowhere in the bible does it say that same-sex marriage is at all acceptable. Therefore, many religious minorities believe that marriage is only acceptable between a man and a woman. If America prides itself on being the home of freedom and hope, anyone who is truly in love should be married when they want to be. If all marriages were treated equally, America could live up to being the home of the free. By denying same-sex unions, America is violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Gay marriage has been a topic of discussion between many people. It is talked in good and bad ways, due to a person’s beliefs or even just their overall opinions. The topic has been present for many years. Throughout the years many things have improved for the rights of the same sex couples. It included difficult times for these couples. They had to fight for their rights. They had to fight people that did not believe that they have these rights.
