Would you have ever thought that a friendship or relationship could tremendously alter your entire life? Friendships and relationships can positively or negatively impact an individual’s life is the theme expressed in the three selections. In the Uglies, written by Scott Westerfeld, Tally faces a life- changing situation which questions her chance of becoming pretty. Furthermore, E. E. Cummings expresses the speaker’s feelings of love in [i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]. In The Third and Final Continent, written by Jhumpa Lahiri, an Indian man strives for a successful new life in America with the assistance of acquaintanceships. Undoubtedly, the theme-friendships and relationships can positively or negatively impact an individual’s …show more content…
For instance, the poem describes, “ i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)” ( Line 1-2). The author’s word choice is figurative. A person cannot physically hold someone’s heart. Moreover, the line means that an individual feels and has their partner’s love with them all the time. To explain, it is beneficial in the narrator’s life to feel consumed of love and to be passionate for their relationship. In addition, the author structures the poem into three sections, utilizing several parentheses, and includes repetition at the end of the poem for a valuable impact. To illustrate, the parentheses are located right next to a word. This creates the effect of showing a connection of how close the two individuals’ relationship is in their joyous life together. In comparison, The Third and Final Continent utilizes structure and diction to portray the theme. The Third and Final Continent is structured into numerous paragraphs in chronological order. The order of events allows understanding how relationships influence the Indian mans new journey through life. For instance, it was crucial for the author to create a friendship between Mrs. Croft and the Indian man first in the passage. Without Mrs. Croft, the story would result in a …show more content…
In the poem, the speaker states, “i want no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)” (line 7). To explain, the narrator is deeply in love with his/her partner. Since the emotion is powerfully strong, the actions of the speaker reflect the emotion. The narrator lives and revolves around the lover. It is an uplifting outcome in the speaker’s life because the speaker cherishes the relationship and feels magnificently in love which makes the narrator’s life feel complete. Likewise, in the Uglies, Tally’s thoughts and actions in her relationships aid the development of the theme. Tally meets a new man, named David, in the Smoke. She likes him more than a friend; David feels the same about her. David shares with Tally his feelings about her beauty. Tally is surprised because she is an ugly. David tells Tally, ‘” What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful”’(Westerfled 264). Tally then has her first true kiss with David. As a result, Tally’s actions and feelings involving David allow her to acquire meaningful knowledge about life. Their relationship positively impacts her because she feels loved and understands that beauty is not all about appearance. The theme is revealed through various concepts in each
As the first poem in the book it sums up the primary focus of the works in its exploration of loss, grieving, and recovery. The questions posed about the nature of God become recurring themes in the following sections, especially One and Four. The symbolism includes the image of earthly possessions sprawled out like gangly dolls, a reference possibly meant to bring about a sense of nostalgia which this poem does quite well. The final lines cement the message that this is about loss and life, the idea that once something is lost, it can no longer belong to anyone anymore brings a sense...
Bearskin: An unwanted ex-soldier desperately makes a grueling deal with the devil receiving all the money he desires, at the price of his human form.
With imagery she provided a detailed visual of what that looks like, how it sounds and gave readers an understanding of what magic feels like. Finally, characters told the tale with ambiguity so that each and every member of the audience could relate and draw references to the people in their own lives. The poem perfectly unified beauty with basics, showing that true beauty does not always have to be elaborate. True beauty lies within the simplistic details, the character of those involved, the love that is felt and the goodness of mankind, that alone is magic. The theme that all moments are worthy of gratitude no matter how often they occur or how simple they appear is beautifully exemplified in the poem “Common Magic”.
Theme: Situations and surroundings can shatter the innocence of friendship, but more the identity of the individuals.
result it has on people. In all three poems the last line of the poems
The story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury is a science fiction short story that has themes connecting to what is happening now, and what will happen in the future. “The Veldt” was written in 1950, where notable technological advances were made. Things such as the first TV remote control and credit cards (although, known as the “travel and entertainment” card at the time) were made. 8 million televisions were also being used in homes around the US (The People History. Retrieved from http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1950.html). As technology is advancing, things are getting easier; people are starting and continuing to become more leisurely. The story “The Veldt” is showing how our future might end up as technology advances, and people themselves
...tion between loneliness and death. The first three lines of each stanza in this poem generally have four feet, while the last line have only two or three. This change calls attention to the last line, in which Keats makes references to images.
Everyone in the world has one thing in common. Every single person wants love. Ted Hughes’s beautiful poem “A Moon-Lily” uses an extended metaphor to compare a moon-lily to love. At the poem’s beginning, the speaker describes the “moon-lily” as “marvelously white” (1). The speaker uses the color white as a symbol of purity, wholeness, and completeness. A person feels whole and complete when they are in love. The speaker is implying that the flower is love and that the love is pure. The persona uses this image of love to describe the type of love one person tries to give to another. In this poem the person giving the love is the woman and the person refusing their love is the man. In Hughes’s “A Moon-Lily” the speaker compares a moon-lily to
Stanzas one and two of the poem are full of imagery. The first stanza sets the scene for the poem “in a kingdom by the sea” (Poe 609) which makes you feel as if the story is going to have a “romantic” (Overview) feel to it. Then Annabel Lee comes into the story with “no other thought than to love and be loved by me” (Poe 609); This sentence is full of imagery in the sense that it makes you feel the immense capacity of love Annabel Lee had for the speaker if that was her only thought. In the second stanza the imagery takes a turn that shifts from loving and inviting to pain; The love between Annabel and the speaker was so strong that
In Uglies, a sympathetic tone is present. David informs Tally that he sees her as beautiful, an unfamiliar statement for Tally because growing up “no one was considered to be even remotely beautiful” (Westerfeld 263). This is a sympathetic tone because it is evident that the author feels sorry for Tally and her inability to have self-worth. Rudyard Kipling also masterfully shows his emotions by creating an optimistic tone in the poem. The narrator’s repetitive use of the words, “if you can” (Kipling 1-4), shows that he is hopeful for the reader’s success in the future, provided that the reader can recognize his or her own value and abilities. Both texts show the importance of seeing one’s own beauty and potential, as well as
This poem helps us to recognize and appreciate beauty through its dream sequence and symbolism. The poem opens with the Dreamer describing this
The main line that directs the poems feelings is "The wraith of Love's sweet Rose is here, It haunts me everywhere! ". The ghost of "Love's sweet rose" is in my life and mind. The ghost of that rose is in my presents and is with her everywhere she goes.
Throughout the poem two phrases are repeated many times, emphasizing their importance, and giving them more power. As they are repeated the reader is shown the indifference of the narrator when he says, "First they came for the ..." "and I did not speak out Because I was not a..." (Niemöller, 1-6). These phrases and their interchangeable endings show how the narrator does not care who is facing troubles as long as it is not them. This indifference is detrimental because it shows a lack of empathy and cares for others in the narrator. Niemöller's repetition of these two phrases during his poem highlights the narrator's consistent disregard for people different than them. A shift in the pattern of thinking of the narrator is seen when he says, "Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me." (Niemöller, 7). After repeatedly ignoring the injustices against others the narrator realizes their mistake when they find themself in the same situation as the people they had previously ignored. This change in how the narrator thinks shows how their lack of action to help others face their injustices was done so partly in ignorance. The narrator had not yet realized that everyone faces struggles at a point during their lives, and that the only way to get through them is by supporting and having the support of
The third stanza uses hyperboles to describe the depths of love between the two people and the line “He was my North, my South, my East and West” leads the reader to believe that the person who died set a course and now the speaker does not know what direction to take. The deceased was the speaker’s whole world. The disappointment the speaker is experiencing is conveyed when he says, “I thought that love would last fo...
On a literal level, this poem is bashing true love. This is made apparent throughout the poem. The speaker states things like “listen to them laughing-it’s an insult” and “it’s obviously a plot behind the human race’s back”. It is apparent that the speaker doesn’t have a positive opinion about true love. They even so far as to claim that it an outrage to justice and that it “disrupts our painstakingly erected principles”. This poem is about how true love is just illusion; especially to those people that never find it.
