Gender role is a form of a woman’s identity and if a woman doesn’t fit into that gender role of the society’s behaviours norms then she is rejected among others throughout her entire life. Both Maria from ‘Half-breed by Campbell’ and Anne Shirley from ‘Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery’ represent characters that go through stages in their life of rejection not only by others but themselves as well, however they contrast in ways by their level of emotional strength and by the level of capability of fulfilling women responsibilities. Maria and Anne are both played as women who are considered as the outsiders in their society by means of their color, sex or just the way their personality is illustrated. However if compared Maria to Anne, Maria is much more gender oriented by not only being an emotionally strong women who can face problems but also with regards of filling the national border by having a high level of awareness of women oriented responsibilities.
Either through their own prospective or through the society’s overall views, Maria and Anne recognize that they’re not a part of the dominant community and are less considered compared by the other sex. When Maria was born she was not accepted by her father at first due to her being a girl “At last I arrived much to dad’s disappointment”(Campbell, 16). A girl cooked, cleaned and took care of children but Mr. Campbell needed less of a girl and more of a boy to help him with earning a couple of dollars for the family. However he overcame his disappointment and began considering Maria as a boy and therefore began teaching her what boys are taught “set traps, shoot a rifle, and fight like a boy” (Campbell, 16). In both novels, the characters childhood was clearly shown by Maria and Anne doing foolishness and committing innocent crimes, which influences a reader to re-consider of what the characters personality really is. Even though the girls had similarities they were shown as completely different people when it regarded strength and responsibility. Being strong, facing all problems as they arise and completing given tasks are factors that was illustrated by Maria. However uncontrollable tears, scared to face any problems without being hurt, unclean and nonetheless irresponsible of duties given was illustrated by Anne. So to sum up, Maria and Anne are two characters that share similarities but due to their upbringings, teachings and the way their life has shifted causes them to have many differences.

Throughout history, women’s place and role in society has changed. Women are often seen as a lower status and have a need to be taken care of by men. There are conflicts with the idealization of women as they are often overlooked and viewed as secondary characters. This idealization is well established in the characters of Desdemona in Othello and Daisy in The Great Gatsby. In F.Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby and Shakespeare‘s play Othello, Desdemona and Daisy are both responsible for their tragedies due to the manipulation and impact of the outsiders, their loss of innocence, and their vulnerability as women.
In Arcadia, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Look Back in Anger, the women characters play distinct roles in the dramas. Throughout time women have been written as the lesser sex, weaker, secondary characters. They are portrayed as dumb, stupid, and nothing more than their fading beauty. In Alice Munro’s short story “Boys and Girls,” our narrator is a young farm girl on the verge of puberty who is learning what it means to be a “girl.” The story shows the differing gender roles of boys and girls – specifically that women are the weaker, more emotional sex – by showing how the adults of the story expect the children to grow into their respective roles as a girl and a boy, and how the children grow up and ultimately begin to fulfill these roles, making the transition from being “children” to being “young adults.”
Throughout literature, authors employ a variety of strategies to highlight the central message being conveyed to the audience. Analyzing pieces of literature through the gender critics lens accentuates what the author believes to be masculine or feminine and that society and culture determines the gender responsibility of an individual. In the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, the gender strategies appear through the typical fragile women of the mother and the grandmother, the heartless and clever male wolf, and the naïve and vulnerable girl as little red riding hood.
The young girl in the story is struggling with finding her own gender identity. She would much rather work alongside her father, who was “tirelessly inventive” (Munro 328), than stay and work with her mother in the kitchen, depicted through, “As soon as I was done I ran out of the house, trying to get out of earshot before my mother thought of what to do next” (329). The girl is torn between what her duties are suppose to be as a woman, and what she would rather be doing, which is work with her father. She sees her father’s work as important and worthwhile, while she sees her mother’s work as tedious and not meaningful. Although she knows her duties as a woman and what her mother expects of her, she would like to break the mould and become more like her father. Women were more often seen as a main character in a story setting as the literary period advanced. Around the nineteenth century women were beginning to break away from the social norms of society. Society had created a subservient role for women, which did not allow women to stand up for what they believe in. As the role of women in literature evolves, so does their views on the workforce environment and their own independence. Throughout the history of the world, British, and American literature, women have evolved to become more independent, self-reliant, and have learned to emphasize their self-worth.
