In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the main character, “Scout” learns that there are two types of underprivileged people in this world. The first type of poor people are those such as the Cunningham’s, who are so humble, that they manage live with the very little that they have. The next types of poor people are those such as the Ewells, who are a load of filthy, drunkyards. This family takes everything for granted, without the least bit of appreciation. These two families are examples of the poor people in this world. A big aspect of these two families that tells a lot about there personalities is there overall appearances. Walter Cunningham’s display is tidy and very clean. This fact is shown when Scout notices Walter in her new classroom and how he looks on his first day. “He did have on a clean and neatly mended overalls.”(19). His appearance shows how the Cunningham’s try hard not to look like beggars. Unlike the Cunningham’s, Burris Ewell does not dress like he is proud at all. In fact he does not care if he looked like a smelly, filthy rat. When Scout sees him...
Poverty can be a terrible thing. It can shape who you are for better or for worse. Although it may seem awful while you experience it, poverty is never permanent. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which takes place in Alabama in the middle of the Great Depression, Walter Cunningham and Burris Ewell are both in a similar economic state. Both of their families have very little money; however, they way they manage handle themselves is very different. In this essay, I will compare Walter Cunningham and Burris Ewell’s physical appearance and hygiene, their views on education, and their manners and personalities.
The movie “To Kill a Mockingbird” is a good example of how socio-economic class differences clash into non reality. There are a variety of different economic classes throughout this movie that relates to life as it was in the south during the 1930s. The major aspects that disperse the people in the movie into different social classes are race, gender, and profession. For example, Atticus and his kids are a part of the highest social class because Atticus is a well respected lawyer which makes him part of the the highest profession in the community. Being the highest social class in the community, Atticus and his kids must treat others of lower class with integrity. A good example of this is when Walter Cunningham is invited to dinner by Jem, assuming the Cunningham’s were of a lower class based on the fact that Mr. Cunningham paid Atticus with a sack of goods instead of money. When Walter was eating and soaked his food in syrup, scout was rude to Walter and was punished because for being disrespectful to people of a lower class. Mrs. Dubose would be an example of a middle class citizen. The main reason she is not of a highest class is because of the way she treats the people around her .If she were in the same social class as Atticus then she would respect the people in her community. The Cunningham family would represent the lower social class because they borrow money and recompense it back with farm substances instead of cash. The Ewell’s would classify as the lowest social class because they are poor, rude, and have no aspiration to work. Even though Calpurnia has all good aspects of a decent lady and is well respected throughout the community, she is still considered to be part of this class as well because she is African American. Calpurnia would most likely be considered part of Atticus’s social class if she were
Social Justice There are many responsibilities and duties that one should fulfill to rid the world of social injustices and inequalities but if no one doesn’t step in then how is this issue supposed to be put to rest? In To Kill a Mockingbird, the fictional town of Maycomb County isn’t a perfect little town but one that is filled with racist, critical, and judgmental people with no morals. On the other hand, there are people like Atticus Finch who do what they believe is right. Atticus filled his responsibility for this issue by defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell. This was a pivotal moment in the book because Atticus took the case when no one else in Maycomb would because they are too afraid and racist to defend a man like Tom Robinson, an African American.
As the reader first encounters Scott, she is found to be influenced by a prestige – honored environment as validated by her behavior towards the low status Cunningham's. People with more money think they are better than those with less money. Maycomb has a hostile and unsympathetic view of people with different colored skin and people who come from families with a low income. If someone in the town is poor, they will be treated differently and be segregated from others. The richer do this to make sure the poor know that they are lower than them. It seems that the poor are not given a chance. Scout accepts this as if it were wholly logical, evidence that she is gullible to the attack of social classes that she regularly faces. This point is strengthened as the story progresses to scouts first day of school. At no...
“There’s four kinds of folks in the world. There’s the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there’s the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and there’s the negroes.” (Lee 258).When Jem proclaimed this social idea to Scout in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, it showed how much of an influence the different economic classes have on the people of Maycomb County. In the novel, Scout and Jem Finch are raised by their father Atticus, a lawyer who is very respectful and understanding. Atticus’ outlook on life is shown when he accepts the Cunningham’s payment in things grown from their farm instead of money, when Atticus helped them with an entailment. The Finch children are also raised with the help of Calpurnia, the family’s African American cook, and spend the summer with their best friend Dill Harris. Dill comes to
In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird the story is about a man named Atticus Finch, who defends an African-American man named Tom Robinson who was wrongly accused of rape. Atticus’s children Scout and Jem are exposed to racism for the first time through the Tom Robinson case. Meanwhile Scout is dealing with her own issues of sexism and gender roles. There is also a big problem with social class with some people living in extreme poverty. While there were improvements made to these issues of racism and social class in the US today, they are still well behind where they would ideally be.
There were many different forms of discrimination in To Kill a Mockingbird.People were judged based on their race, social status, and even gender. There were many times where people was not treated like regular people . The book was set in the south during the early to mid 1930’s. Life for black people, women, and lower level people was clearly depicted as challenging & difficult.
In Harper Lee’s book To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents the idea that wisdom is demonstrated by going against the majority’s thoughts, and having one’s own sense of right and wrong. Social justice requires wisdom to have respect for people of all backgrounds. Harper Lee created the character of Atticus to present this idea of social justice in her book. Atticus Finch represents social justice by the way he deals with racism, drug addiction, and violence.
They don’t get along very well at first, but is the first person in the story that helps show the different social classes in the book. The first instance is in the first couple chapters and it’s on Scout’s first day of school. Her teacher Miss Caroline is new to the town and doesn’t understand the dynamic of the social classes. She tells Walter that he can pay her back for his lunch and he refuses, the teacher is confused and Scout is the one that has to explain it to her. Scout says “Walter’s one of the Cunninghams, Ms. Caroline.” Then her teacher asks her what she means and she says, “That’s okay, ma’am, you’ll get to know all the country folk after a while. The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t take back-no church baskets and no scrip stamps.” (Lee, 20) This shows that the Cunninghams are in a lower social class than the average person in Maycomb, and it’s something that Scout has known her whole life. Another instance is when Scout has a flashback and is remembering when Atticus helped out Walter’s dad and he payed him back with wood and different things like that. This shows that how the Cunninghams are a lower social class and gives us more of an overview of the social dynamics of the
In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, uses the theme of racism to express the social inequality in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. I think this is best shown in the trial against Tom Robinson when the jury chooses to blame an innocent man based on the color of his skin.
In chapter two of the novel we follow Scout through her first day of school. Whenever lunch time rolls around a boy named Walter Cunningham has no lunch to eat. Miss Caroline, their teacher, tries to offer him money to go buy a lunch. When Walter continuously refuses the money, Scout feels like she should explain things some. “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham.” Scout says, expecting this to be a good enough explanation for her teacher. Scout’s attempt to help, is referring to Walters family’s economic situation. “...The Cunninghams never took anything they can’t pay back…” She adds. This event in the book shows that there are some definite social classes within Maycomb county and even the children recognize it.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” is an all-time classic and unforgettable novel. Through Harper Lee’s unique way of writing, several conflicts about politics and social injustices begin to erupt one by one throughout the novel – with a hefty portion of the story focusing on prejudice and the relationships between African Americans and whites in the Southern
Discrimination, a huge word that includes all stereotypes. Even if we want to deny it, discrimination ever existed. It has assumed vary shapes during the centuries. Discrimination is: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. Most of the time discriminations are determined by communities following folks. People are excluded from the communities for their skin color because the history and the majority parts of people tend to put them below the standard of white people.
Race discrimination is when a person who is black or a different race that is treated more poorly than others in a certain situation. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee and from credible articles, american use racial discrimination and it needs to be stopped. This is a big problem because people are being blocked from certain areas because of their race, white people don’t trust black people when they are in trial, and specific people can’t buy a nice house or live in a nice neighborhood because they are “different”. These are some reason why we need to stop race discrimination in the United States and prevent it from happening again.
Plessy lost the controversial case wholly due to his race despite being 18 black. We can also see this type of racial injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson (an African American man who is a field worker) is accused of raping Mayella Ewell (a white girl). Tom testifies to the court and is cross examined by Mr. Gilmer, the lawyer leading the prosecution. At one point in the trial, Tom states: “I felt sorry for her” (Lee 201).
